Toggling winter mode allows the player to:
- Ice skate (useful for getting the MREs and getting to the lake)
- Grab the safe from the surface
- Generally traverse the river faster (you simply walk or ride on the surface)
These points cut a lot of time from the run, but since winter mode is a togglable feature (and no key is actually assigned for the toggle by default), it leaves me confused, because the difference is massive. I already have both of these kinds of runs recorded, and I'm not really sure if I want to submit only the winter one (because it's faster) or both of them.
So I want to ask the community, what do you think about separating non-winter and winter mode runs into 2 different subcategories?
The downside to this might be the overpopulating of the category pool, which is kinda inconvenient and might not be necessary. In this case, nevertheless, some kind of decision should be made on the topic of using winter mode, in my opinion.
Okay, let's think if winter mode should be a variable (like version and category type are now). This move will cost us 50 ye.. this will add a divider for each category, which can be suitable for big community, but now it can just stay. Other idea is to make separate categories for winter mode where it applicable. It's more flexible but should be added for each type manually. (like winter kefur O%, winter burger%) which i don't like personally. Share your thoughts :D @Jump, @Naleg, @babyemogirl, @yep_s
Burger% has 1 burger that is under the bridge to the left of base that isn't terrible to go out of the way to get. idk if its to major a concern as its kinda a swoop under and grab situation where if there was ice it be on top the bridge and have to climb or walk around and may take longer would have to test situation to see the time difference. may also get stuck under the bridge depending on ice level and not be grabbable if so. (few seconds difference guessing)
other that is even remotely near water would be the log on the island by the lake. which normally just drop down into and fiddle with the rocks till you can touch the burger.
route I did used the bridges as it was already right next to logically and wouldn't really have much advantage to drive over the river. kinda just made a big loop as waiting for time to progress till day for wolfgang to be spawnable and grab the last in the cave.~which depending on how long someone choses to stand at the gate will alter the run cutting out the need for time to progress to be spawnable and may need to adjust the ruling of when the speedrun starts moment
My main concern about winter mode at the moment of creating this thread was the fact that the safe teleports to the surface of the lake, but only if you toggle winter mode right when you first spawn in the world (toggling it mid-run just spawns the ice and leaves the safe inaccessible). Another way of accessing winter mode, I suppose, would be changing the date on your computer, but I haven't tested that personally. Along that, ice skating is a very fast method of transportation.
But since I started using prop flight for KerfurO% runs, the advantages of winter mode dropped down a little bit for me. Extracting the safe is not a big problem anymore and flying is just about the same in terms of speed comparing to ice skating.
However, winter mode can still bring some advantages to other categories (Burger% and any future ones) and is a quite radical change to the gameplay process. My suggestion would be adding a 'Miscellaneous categories' drop-down list and putting winter mode variants there (i. e. KerfurO% Winter, Burger% Winter and so on). Thus the main page wouldn't be so overpopulated by categories and runs utilizing winter mode would still be valid for uploading.
@babyemogirl, Okay, we can stick to temporary 'Misc' section. If winter mode will substitute speedrun experience any further and many subcategories will be required, then i'll switch it to a variable mode and make these runs not primary ones in some of the corner xd
So next question: which categories do you want to have winter mode for?
And the second question. Is it better to add the ABILITY to have winter mode turned on or make it PERMANENT REQUIREMENT? I think the second option will do
