LiveSplit.
While there is an in-game timer in the works, a useful external software is preferred by many speedrunners. This program is called LiveSplit. LiveSplit provides a robust timer for speedrunning, it also includes a function known as Splits or Splitting.**** A split marks a certain point of progression in a speedrun or game.
How To Install.
Installing LiveSplit is a relatively simple process. First you must go to livesplit.org and click "DOWNLOADS". This will bring you to two downloads, it is recommenced that you download the most recent version of LiveSplit and NOT the development build.
LiveSplit will then appear as a zipped file in the folder you specified (this is usually the downloads folder by default on Windows.) Extract the file to a destination of your choosing. Open the file and look for an application named LiveSplit (for easier access you can create a shortcut of this file.)
Recommended Settings & How To Use.
When you open LiveSplit, you will be greeted by a small black box with a timer in it, this is where your run's time will be shown, be sure to include LiveSplit in your recording program.
There are several settings that we recommend you have on to improve your experience with it. To access settings right click the timer, this should open a menu, near the bottom, there should be a button labeled "Settings", click on this. This will open a new window with various settings, we will be changing a few of these. The most important among these is "Global Hotkeys", this allows the hotkeys you set up for LiveSplit to be used when not tabbed in to LiveSplit. Setting up a hotkey for Pause is optional but strongly recommended. Make sure to press "OK" or your settings will not save.
Finally, we arrive at splits, reopen the drop down menu and click "Edit Splits...", this will open a new window, which is relatively self-explanatory. To set the game to UTMC, simply enter "UTMC" in the game run type box, and a drop down with the game present. Then enter your run category and create your splits. You are now ready to use LiveSplit!
