Any% full guide

This guide aims to give general and in depth advices for people interested in running Any%.

# Prerequisites

First of all, **read the rules** for the Any% category.

Then, make sure you have **Livesplits set up correctly**, see the guide i made for it here : https://www.speedrun.com/Peaks_of_Yore/guides/93vri

# **How many peaks do you need to complete?**

Any% means reaching the normal ending. The requirement is completing any **32 peaks including 3 advanced** peaks.
The optimal way of completing 32 peaks is : **19 fundamentals + 10 Intermediates + 3 advanced**
Out of all the fundamentals, Land's End is the longest so it should be the one to be skipped. Wuthering crest is the longest if we take the wait time for the wind to stop when entering the peak into consideration. Although with good wind RNG, you could start the climb right away.
Of course, according to your personal times, you should skip the peak that is the slowest for you.

# **What door events do you need to answer?**

There are **7 door events** you have to go through :

- *6pts crampons* (parcel boy) obtained after completing Old Grove's Skelf 
- *Gramophone* (parcel boy) obtained after completing any 2 fundamental peaks
- *Safety harness + 5 ropes* (parcel father) obtained after completing any 3 fundamental peaks
- *Intermediate book* (Porter) obtained after completing any 15 fundamental peaks
- *Pocketwatch* (parcel boy) obtained after completing any 2 intermediate peaks
- *Advanced book* (Lucy) obtained after completing any 15 fundamental peaks + 5 intermediate peaks or 20 fundamental peaks + any 1 intermediate peak
- *10pts crampons* (Porter) obtained after completing any 3 advanced peaks

Although you would think the Gramophone, Safety harness and Pocketwatch are not needed in the run, you still have to go through those events because of how the game works. Indeed, some door events can't be skipped and others have priority.
Additionally, 10pts crampons might seem unnecessary at first, and while the door event for them is skippable, getting them actually saves time overall.

Another very important point is that **you never want to answer multiple door events in a row**. The reason for that is the wait time between 2 consecutive door events is 6s. But when you return to the cabin after finishing a peak and a door event happens, it takes only 3s for it to trigger.
So you effectively saves 21s by simply answering the door once per cabin trip.

# **So, what map order do you pick and when do you answer the door?**

Now that you know how many maps you need to complete and what door events to answer, we can make a proper route.

Technically you want the fastest route possible which would be unlocking the intermediate and advanced books as soon as possible. As we said :

- the intermediate book unlocks after 15 fundamentals
- the advanced book unlocks after 15 fundamentals + 5 intermediates OR 20 fundamentals + 1 intermediate.
Out of these two options, the first one is obviously faster since you only need to complete 20 peaks instead of 21 (5 of them being boulders which are faster than fundamentals)

You can already see how convenient this is, 15 fundamentals unlocks the intermediate book and after 5 intermediate, you already meet the requirements to unlock the advanced book. But since this is only 20 maps done and you need a total of 32, you might aswell do the shortest ones left and finish the 5 last intermediates.

You might ask why is it that we don't do all 19 fundamentals right away before starting the intermediate ones. There are 2 reasons. The first one is to skip the *Chalk door event* that is triggered after 18 fundamentals completed. The second one is because you can unlock 10pts crampons after 3 advanced peaks and return to finish the last 4 fundamentals with them equipped. The time you lose by answering the door event for 10pts crampons is easily saved by how fast you can complete the last 4 fundamentals with 10pts compared to 6pts crampons.

So, 15 fundamentals + 10 intermediate puts us at 25 completed peaks. You then want to do 3 advanced to unlock 10pts crampons. The fastest advanced peaks are the first 3 ones : Walker's Pillar, Great Gaol and Eldenhorn. Once this is done, you can finish the run by completing the last 4 fundamentals.

In total we have 15 fundamentals + 10 intermediates + 3 advanced + 4 fundamentals = 32 peaks.

**Map order**

15 first Fundamentals

- This is a speedrun and you want to go fast. So you want to unlock crampons as fast as possible. So you want to **start the run with Old Grove's Skelf** and answering the door right after.
- This is a speedrun and you want to go fast. So you want to unlock coffee as fast as possible. So you want to **complete The Twins as soon as possible**. Completing the peak is the only requirement to unlock coffee (the Pearse brothers are only present if you've completed Gray Gully before The Twins, but interacting with them is not needed anyways)
You answer the door right after to unlock the gramophone
- It might be smart to complete **Hangman's Leap** to get it out of the way since it can be a run killer. But no matter what your third map is, answer the door right after to unlock the safety harness.
- Now you can **complete 12 other fundamentals**. You want to do them in order starting with Greenhorn's Top since they are very short and you save time by flipping pages in order in the book.
- Remember to **skip your longest fundamental**, optimally Land's End. (if you want to skip one of the 4 latest ones, it's up to you)
- Once you've completed 15 fundamentals, answer the door to unlock the intermediate book.

10 boulders

- You want to **complete Porter's Boulder and Jotunn's Thumb** before answering the door to unlock the pocketwatch.
- Then simply complete all 8 remaining boulders in order, before answering the door after Cromlech to unlock the advanced book.

3 advanced

- Optimally, you want to **complete Walker's Pillar, Great Gaol and Eldenhorn** which are the shortest advanced peaks. St. Haelga comes next and Ymir's Shadow is the longest.
Answer the door after to unlock 10pts crampons.

4 last fundamentals

- Finish the run by completing the remaining 4 fundamentals.

# Ending the run and conclusion

The Livesplits timer should stop once you've completed all required 32 peaks. Remember that **the ending cinematic must be triggered for the run to be valid**. So your recording must at the very least include the ending cinematic. (i personally skip the credits and stop my recording once i return to the cabin)

I hope this guide will help you set up a good route and run Any%. It is a very interesting and enjoyable run. There are slight variations possible in the map order depending on your preferences of course and this is but a guideline for the most optimal route.

How to setup the Autosplitter for Peaks of Yore

## How to setup the Autosplitter for Peaks of Yore

**1** - Download the latest version of LiveSplit [https://livesplit.org/downloads/](https://livesplit.org/downloads/)

**2** - Open LiveSplit

**3** - Once the Timer appears on your screen, **right click** > **Edit Splits**

- Select “Peaks of Yore” in the Game Name scrolling menu
- Next to “Autosplitter and Load Removal Available” click on **Activate**.
- Click on **Settings**

Make sure everything is checked and click **OK**.

**4** - You can then go back to Edit Splits and add Splits to your convenience. The timer will start when you gain control in the first selected level and will only split when entering the cabin after a level. The timer will also reset on its own when you go back to the main menu (unless you’ve completed a run). So make sure to create your splits accordingly. Click **OK** when you’re done.

Note that the timer will start for about 0.01 or 0.02s when you enter a level. This is due to how loading works in the game and this is normal. This doesn't affect runs.

**5** - On the timer, **right click** > **Compare against** > **Game Time**. The timer will not work if this option is not set on Game Time.

That's it, now you can run the game. Note that you can also customize pretty much everything about the layout of the splitter, from the font size to the colors.
