Did you link the controller to the emulator settings? You have to link the controller and buttons to settings via the emulator or it won't work. 

If that's not the problem, you wouldn't happen to have an Xbox Controller, would you? I'm not sure about PS4, but my Xbox One Controller works beautifully on both USB and Bluetooth. You may want to consider buying one if you can't find a way get it to work or if works but ends up having numerous problems.
