A Guide to Movement

Listed are all current movement mechanics known in Lightmatter, how to do them, and some tricks to make them easier.

DOUBLE/TRIPLE-JUMPING

Double jumping is a mechanic wherein a near-perfect jump input can be made in midair to get an extra jump. This can be done twice to get another jump on top of this, getting a triple jump.

This technique is 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 for a full RTA run of the game. After testing, it is completely random as to what frame you need to jump on in order to achieve a double or triple jump, and whilst your odds can be improved to get a higher chance of hitting one, it can't practically be pushed above ~70%. Believe me, an unreal amount of macros were used to test that, it's not currently possible.

In order to achieve a double jump, first set your framerate cap to 30fps. This option can be found in the pause menu: Settings -> Graphics -> Frame Rate -> 30. This is to maximise the time a double jump frame will last, as it is almost impossible to hit on anything higher than 30.

The recommended input for a double or triple jump is a consistent rhythm of three jump inputs. This should, with good timing, regularly guarantee you a triple jump, although you will still often miss. It is easiest to demonstrate with a video:

Successful jumps in that video are triples at 0:05, 0:13, a double at 0:25, triples at 0:27, 0:30, and 0:37.

Again, it should be emphasised that trying to use this strategy for anything except a flex in a run is pretty much not feasible. It's hard, man.

Most IL runs
Getting up sets of stairs faster - no need to deal with the slower walk speed up them or the slight movement speed decrease when you land from jumping up them.

RAILGRINDING

Railgrinding is a technique wherein you can "grind" along thin slippery surfaces, like railings or the tracks for moving platforms, to get to places through routes never intended.

To execute a railgrind, walk onto a thin slippery surface and use A/D to balance yourself on top, whilst holding W to move forwards. It is easiest to occasionally tap one direction and stay on one side of the rail, rather than constantly swapping directions, as this requires less inputs.

You can jump into a railgrind so long as you counter the additional vertical momentum by pushing back really hard towards the rail when you land on it. You can also hold items whilst railgrinding, although you will not be able to pick them up or put them down.

Many rails in the game are not easy to cross, however. This is because they have bumps in them, caused by cosmetic props that are there to make the rail seem like it's being held up by something. These will throw you violently in a pre-set direction, which is seemingly random per bump, which can be countered by going 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 far on the rail in the other direction. Rails with bumps are incredibly hard to cross, and as such should realistically be reserved for IL runs only.

If you'd like to practice railgrinding in-game, the best level is Level 36. Placing the lamp backwards on the moving platform and sending it across the gap lights up almost the entire rail, with a small black zone at the end. If you die by hitting that black zone, then congratulations - you have grinded one of the longest rails in the game!

If you'd like to practice railgrinding with bumps, the best level is Level 22. This level features lots of moving platform rails with bumps in them, including an incredibly technical rail immediately on the right when entering the second area which currently remains uncrossed.

Many objects in the game can be grinded outside of basic rails. Try different objects, and see what happens - so long as it's sloped, it should work! (Pictured - wall rail in Level 36)

Autosplitter Information Post

The autosplitter for Lightmatter has been finalized.
This is an add-on component for the LiveSplit timer and does not work with any other program.

* above your splits, an "Activate" button will appear, which you need to click
* done!

Level 01 Skip [Glitched Double-Jump Route, 1.09]

this route uses a relatively precise double-jump in order to slide up a steep slope, passing through a missing ceiling tile and into an out of bounds area, from which the loading zone for level 2 is a short jump away.


𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬:
‣ navigate level 1 as usual, up until the point where you pass the heap of wreckage in the corridor with party balloons. since this is a glitched run, remember to double-jump up staircases to avoid landing on downward slopes, saving additional time.

‣ double-jump up the sloped surface on the back of the wreckage, landing on a thin ledge above the metal sheet. there are many ways to make this jump - however, the most consistent method i have found is to run perpendicular to the surface, double-jumping as close to the slope as possible, aiming just to the right of the corner on the cutout, before snaking a little to the left to land on top of the metal sheet.

‣ turn around and use the pipe to get up and out of bounds to the right. most of both the metal sheet you're standing on and the pipe you want to jump to count as slippery surfaces, so you may need to wiggle around a bit to find solid ground to move from.

‣ jump on the spot in order to activate the level 2 loading zone. i'm not actually sure where this loading zone starts and ends, so adjust where you aim to land from the pipe jump according to wherever you find this jump to work most consistently.

• you can come incredibly close to making this jump with a single jump, which would potentially make it usable in an any% nmg run. that being said, going out of bounds itself may be considered a glitch in some cases, so i'd get a second opinion before submitting anything. either way, i haven't managed to make the jump yet, although it's almost certainly doable with some patience.

this route uses the first lamp to light up a ledge near the cutscene area, then some finnicky double-jumps in order to make it across the gap straight up to the button.


𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬:
‣ walk out and press the button to request the lamp, standing on the rail so that you can pick it up as earlier as possible.
‣ drop the lamp to the right facing the edge of the cutscene platform. where you place the lamp is a matter of risk - if you drop the lamp early and light less of the highlighted outcrop, the next jump will be made more difficult, with the advantage of being able to walk faster for a short while with empty hands.

‣ hop over the fence, across the pit and land at the bottom of the rocky outcrop. if you land this jump correctly, you should start slowly sliding up to the top of the rock, gaining vertical speed.

‣ as you hit the top of the outcrop, double jump to launch yourself upwards with the speed you've gained from sliding up the rock. push up against the rail to "boost" yourself for a little extra height, before landing on top of the crates above. try to keep your second jump input as late as possible in order to guarantee maximum vertical momentum.

‣ hit that button. success! invite everyone around to bathe in the excitement whilst you wait for virgil to Get To The Fucking Point, then leave through the now-open exit door.

• with a single jump you *can* land on top of the railing, which leaves you with a lot of ground to slide around on, but seemingly no solid ground to use to gain another jump. this is frustratingly close to making this a possible jump in nmg and would save a lot of time if performed, so further experimentation is needed!

When leaving Level 11 and the split triggers for Level 12 immediately go to Menu and Retry. You don't have to hit the button as I did. I realized after this recording that you just need to do it the moment the split occurs.

Level 15 Skip [Glitchless, 1.09]

this route uses the first lamp to light up the bottom receptor, the second lamp to light up the corridor to the exit, then abuses some screwy level geometry to jump around the final door to the exit platform.


𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬:
‣ walk left and pick up the lamp, turning around so that it hits the bottom receptor.
‣ pick up the second lamp, dropping it in front of the open door such that it lights up the highlighted wall to the left of the shut door across the room.

‣ jump around the left side of the door, landing inside of the wall that you just lit. for reference on the area you can pass through, check where the wall stops sloping - the sloped portion of wall is decoration, whilst the vertical portion is solid.

• i have no idea why the collision in this area is set up this way. similar collision can be found in level 8, where a large column of rock lacks collision in a similar way. it looks like the geometry in the area is set as if it's a decoration, like many cameras and other wall details are. i'd assume it has something to do with optimisation, but it could also be set this way accidentally by the level designers. weird oversight either way!

Steps:
1) Pick up the first lamp and place it on the moving platform.
2) Pick up the second lamp, walk along the corridor to stand in front of the broken window at the end. Shine the lamp at the receptor.
3) Turn away just before the moving lamp is about to shine on the receptor (momentum will carry it forward a bit further after you turn away) and move around to drop the lamp so that it shines on the receptor around the corner on the left.
4) Grab the lamp from the moving platform. Place it down such that it faces through the window near the exit onto the props in the background. This can easily be done by setting up the lamp against the wall - I personally use the two power sockets on the wall, lined up with the two feet on the lamp (using 100 FOV):

5) Move towards the exit, jumping onto the first table, to the second, and finally onto the nearest piece of light on the ground.
6) Proceed to the exit.

Steps:
1) Pick up the first lamp on your left. and stand in the corner to the left of it. Line up your lamp - at 100 FOV, this can easily be accomplished by covering all of the upwards facing arrow and none of the downwards facing arrow with your lamp:

2) Move towards where the lamp is facing, and jump on the pipes to the left of that corridor. Walk along it, and jump to the stacked pipes at the end of it. This jump is tight, as you bash your head on the ceiling - time it a little later than you expect.

3) Make a long jump towards the lit up pipes in front of you, and proceed to the exit.

Steps:
1) Complete part of the chamber normally - taking the moving platform on your left across to the other side, grabbing the connector, taking it back.

2) Press the button to move the moving platform across with the connector and you on it. Whilst it is moving, place the connector on the platform as far to the back-left as possible.

3) Leave the platform and pick up the other connector. Walk in a straight line to the railing on the other side of the corridor, then turn left and walk in a straight line that way. Your connector should swap from the other connector to the host just before it burns out - if it burns out and you die, you probably didn't put the connector far back enough on the moving platform.

4) When the connector swaps, drop it and jump to the small triangle of light on the other side of the broken bridge.

5) Railgrind across the dark rail on your left to the circle of light, press the button, and railgrind back. A guide to railgrinding can be found here: (PLACEHOLDER)

6) Continue the rest of the level as normal - pick the connector back up, use it to go rescue the other one still stranded on the moving platform to your right, and use them to make a path to the exit.

Steps:
1) Enter the chamber and take the bridge to your left. Pick up the connector and place it such that it lights up the receptor next to the bridge.
2) Cross the newly formed bridge on your left. Pick up the first connector you see and move it slightly left. 
3) Turn around and pick up the lamp behind you. Take it back over the bridge, and move around the side to place the lamp so that it shines on the receptor the connector is currently lighting.
4) Pick up the connector and run with it across both bridges on the left, past the setup from earlier, until you end up on the other side of the map. Stick to the left side of the second bridge - if it collapses beneath you, you either didn't stay far enough left or you didn't move the connector from step 2 far enough left.
5) Place the connector so that it just slightly doesn't light up the receptor that's on the bridge you just crossed.
6) Run back along the bridge and move the receptor there back towards its original location, so that it just slightly DOES light up the receptor.
7) Make your way back to your lamp and take it down both bridges on the right, before placing it so that it shines towards the exit.
8] Pick the connector on this side of the bridge back up and take a very narrow path across the right of the right-hand bridge, such that you don't light up the receptor.
9) Solve the rest of the chamber as usual, using the two connectors you now have available to make a path towards the exit.

Level 38 Skip Elevator

It is possible to skip the Elevator ride in Level 38.
- Walk to the Elevator till the level changes to 38.
- Hit retry.
- Done.
