Couple of things:

  1. It says all armour is required; does it need to be fully upgraded? Cause some of those upgrades requires scales from the dragons, which aren’t allowed to be collected.

  2. It makes no mention of All’s Well, is that also required?

I just reset, and was able to start at 8-1. Did we know that was possible?

So I was looking through my emulator, and I noticed that there was an option where you can toggle between Famicom behaviour, AV Famicom/Toploader behaviour, and NES behaviour. Are there actual differences between these consoles? I thought they were functionally identical.

  1. How often is code executed in this game? Is it one line per frame, faster, or slower?
  2. While code is being executed, is it possible to interrupt the subroutine, and begin a new one, will the subroutine finish before the new one starts, or can the game execute multiple subroutines at once?

So, I’m not sure about the legality of this, but you can run the Pal region version of SMB1 at 60 fps (I used the European rom on my NTSC NES and it ran at 60 fps), and it makes Mario’s run speed faster, the countdown timer run out faster at the end of levels, and cutscenes (like the pipe entry cutscene) way faster. Would this be allowed to be used, and if so, could it save time?

So the other day I found out you can get high score in less than 30 seconds if you are allowed to start from any stage you want; this would also cut out the annoying RNG at the end of the run. My question is this: would anyone be interested in running a “Top Score Any%” of sorts, and if so, would mods be willing to add it as a category?

So I was doing some experimentation this morning and I realized that you can get top score in less than a minute. However, to do so, you’d have to play level 1, press select, and then go to level 5. Is this allowed?

I know I have no experience speedrunning this game, so take my theory as you will, however, I had an idea. I do not have a sophisticated understanding of programming, so I am not at all sure if what I am suggesting is possible, but if it is, it could lead to a huge time save. The reason the minus world spawns is because when you go past a certain position on the screen, it parses a scroll lock object which increments the value at $06D6 from 00 to 01. All of the game’s warp zones are technically the same, but just send you to different places based on where you are. 01 corresponds to the warp zone which sends you to world 5, and because the values on what are normally invisible pipes next to it are blank (value 36), the game sends you to world 36-1, or -1. The specifics aren’t super important here, but all that is is that the value 02 corresponds to the warp zone that takes you to world 8. So, if you could somehow parse the scroll lock object, clip back out, parse it again, and clip through the wall to enter the furthest left pipe (like in getting to the minus world), the value would be incrementes twice, to 02, and therefore, if you enter the pipe before the regular warp zone loads in, the game would send you to world 8. I’m not sure if you can parse a scroll lock object twice; maybe it’s like a barrier where you can clip in and out, or maybe it’s an object that you pick up that cannot be picked up again; I’m not sure, but if it’s possible to increment twice, and it’s not too precise, this would save two levels worth of time. Please let me know if my idea is bogus or if I’m onto something.

Is there a specific version I have to use? Cause I think the Japanese Set would be much faster. Or is this only for the American Set?

Calgary, AB, CanadaJAje3 years ago

Hey y’all, So I’ve been running 1 loop of the Donkey Kong Arcade Japanese set because it’s so similar to the NES and OG edition categories, and I’ve gotten decent at it. Obviously, this would not be a category to be added to this game, but I was wondering how many NES runners would be interested in starting to run this. If you have any questions about the route and how to do the 25m skip glitch, just contact me. How many of you would like to give this game (Arcade 1 Loop) a try?

Nintendo created a version of DK NES (calked Donkey Kong original edition) only available as a pre-downloaded VC game in PAL regions for the red Wii which has since been distributed as a rom on the internet. It adds the factory/pie stage back from the arcade version; would anyone be interested in running it, and if so, mods, do you think it would be a good category to add?

Calgary, AB, CanadaJAje3 years ago

I’ve wanted to start running this category, but I can’t find any tutorials or guides. Do you guys have any pointers?

So the other day I was playing some DK and I remembered that there is a GBA port of the NES game! However, based on my understanding of how the ladder glitch works, it is impossible to do it in this version, however, since it is a port of the NES game, it should still be included in this category. Would anyone be willing to start running this category, and, if so, would the mods be willing to add this as a category?

Hey, just wondering if it is known why the ladder glitch is able to happen? If you could enlighten me, that would be awesome!
