! (new) How to setup the game

It's best to make a copy of the Gothic folder and move it out of the "Programs"/Steam folder as the write protection can mess with the installation of the patches.

1. Patches
First download:

Then install:
- VisualCppRedist_AIO_x86_x64.exe
- Union Primary Universal 05.02.2022.exe
- Union 1.0k 03.05.2021.exe
And copy the contents of the appropriate folders into your Gothic folder and choose to overwrite:
- "copy into every game"
- "copy into G1 folder"

You then should have the ingame timer in the top left and version "1 S5.0 U1.0k" in the bottom right of the menu.
You can also start the "Chinese" mod from the GothicStarter for Any%.
You can also start the "Glitch-Restricted" mod to prevent accidentally strafing in the air or having duplicated trader items when playing the Glitch-Restricted/No Major Glitches/Damageless categories.

In case you want to use the Glitch-Restricted patch with other mods:
In the "other non-essential files" folder there is a folder containing the file "glitchless.patch". You can deactivate the file by changing the extension of it to something like "glitchless.patch-" and activate it again by renaming it back to "glitchless.patch".

2. Gothic.ini & Systempack.ini
The Gothic.ini and Systempack.ini are located in the Gothic\system folder.
You can do any changes to your Gothic.ini in video, audio, input etc., but do NOT change anything that would give a gameplay advantage like potion hotkeys, quick saves, inventory settings, etc.
Recommended settings:
playLogoVideos=0
zTexMaxSize=16384
zVobFarClipZScale=2
zStartupWindowed=0
If you want to reset your Gothic.ini, just delete it and start the game and a new one will appear.
You can also change anything in the Systempack.ini, but all gameplay-altering settings are disabled by the speedrun.patch file.

3. Livesplits with ingame timer

- Rick click "LiveSplit.exe" and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and choose "Run as Administrator".
- Open Livesplit
- Right click -> Compare Against -> Game Time
- Right click -> Edit Layout
- Add Control -> Scriptable Auto Splitter
- Set the Script Path to "gothic.asl".

4. frozen screen on videos and loading screens
You can fix this by running the game in the compatibility mode for an older Windows version, but that will increase loading times and lag.

5. limiting FPS
You may want to limit your fps. I recommend limiting it to 500 in general.

2. Go to the 8th tab (Advanced).
3. Put a checkmark at "Limit Video FPS" and enter 500.
You must keep the program open to have the effect.

! (old) How to setup the game

Don't use Spine! If you use Spine, don't be surprised when things don't work as they should because your files get ""fixed"" by Spine.
If you want to use Spine for mods or casual play, copy the Gothic folder and use that copy for speedrunning.
It's also best to make a copy of the Gothic folder and move it out of the "Programs" or Steam folder as the write protection/autoupdates can mess with the installation of the patches.

3. fix videos freezing
Not all systems have this problem. You might be able to skip this step.
- Go to Gothic\system, right-click "GothicMod.exe" and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and choose "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)".
- Repeat this step for "Gothic_backup.exe".
- Go Gothic\system, right-click GothicStarter.exe and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and choose "Run as Administrator".

4. Gothic.ini & Systempack.ini
Go to Gothic\system and open Gothic.ini. Then set
playLogoVideos=0
zStartupWindowed=1
You can also do other changes to your ini in video, audio, input etc., but do NOT change anything that would give a gameplay advantage like potion hotkeys, quick saves, inventory settings, etc.

5. Automatic Load Remover
- Open Livesplit
- Right click -> Compare Against -> Game Time
- Right click -> Edit Layout
- Add Control -> Scriptable Auto Splitter
- Set the Script Path to one of the ".asl" files (read below).
- Rick click "LiveSplit.exe" and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and choose "Run as Administrator".

6. Start the game
You can use either the GothicMod.exe or Gothic_backup.exe to play the game.
The Gothic_backup.exe gives you good OoB behaviour which is necessary for Any% and All Chapters, but it has a minor graphical glitch with bowstrings.
The GothicMod.exe doesn't have that graphical glitch and it's also necessary for playing mods.
(If you really want Chinese text instead of broken text in Any%, download the Chinese files from the Resources tab and use "system\Main.exe" and set "gothic_chin.asl" in LiveSplit.)

FPS Explanation

By default Gothic's FPS is limited to 20.
Later Nico Bendlin published a patch that removes this limit and that patch is also included in Systempack and Union, where it can be toggled on/off with the FPS_Limit=1 setting in SystemPack.ini.

Many parts of Gothic's engine depend on the framerate, so a higher FPS is not always in the runner's favour. Most importantly jumps are cut short at high FPS, so you want to almost always want to run with the FPS limit active.
However for some actions higher FPS are better. That includes dialogues or looting chests or clipping through walls.

The default FPS limiter is applied in a very weird way:
The FPS get reduced to 20 whenever a KEY on the keyboard is PRESSED down.
Afterwards the FPS rise first slowly and then at a faster and faster pace until they reach the PC's capability.
However holding down a key does not apply the FPS limit. Neither does moving the mouse or pressing the left or right mouse button.
So if you for example run forwards and change your angle with the mouse and jump with the right mouse button, the FPS will keep rising.

You can observe this behaviour by entering bfrateb or setting Show_FPS_Counter = 1 in the SystemPack.ini. A framecounter will appear at the top-left corner. The ingame FPS display maxes out at 256 but it goes higher in reality regardless (a program like Dxtory can show the FPS above 256).

What this means for runners:
- Keep the default FPS limit. (The only exception would be some very short runs like the Mudball mod speedrun.)
- Skip dialogues with the right mouse button to benefit from rising FPS during dialogues.
- When doing the clipping method where you strafe into a corner, simply keep holding the strafe key without pressing anything else.
- When doing the clipping method where you do jumpkicks in a corner, hold Ctrl and spam the right mouse button to have your FPS rise.
- For runs like Glitchless with long bloodfly flying sections, where you only hold W, consider using a program like Dxtory* to have another cap of your FPS at a value like 300. An FPS in the thousands harms the GPU and also makes the movement over elevations weird.
- Also for Glitchless bloodfly flying sections intentionally apply the FPS limit at slight elevations that you can't fly over at high FPS. One such example is crossing the bridge when going from the Swamp Camp to the mountain fort.

General Tricks and Bugs

Animal transformation almost always works. Strafing through the corner of a thin gate is possible, but can take a long time.

**duplicate potions**  
get hit while drinking

**fly across the map**  
pause in the right moment of the walking animation

**walk while in dialogue**  
Open the menu just as an NPC talks to you and load a previous save. Nobody can attack you or talk to you anymore. This is only useful for the very end as this cannot be canceled.

A7: retaining or duplicating consumable items (accidentally retained or duplicated items must not be used or sold (unless your total trade value is high enough either way))

A8: going out of bounds

A9: catapult glitch

A10: using the inventory during dialogues to keep an item that should be removed

A11: loading during a dialogue

A12: picking up items from a distance with a spell (by putting the spell away but keeping the item in focus)

A13: drawing a weapon to instantly kill a burning NPC

A14: using an object (like a switch or ore mound) through a wall

A15: strafing on slopes¹

A16: transferring a magic effect from one spell to another

A17: animal transformation in the air to avoid falling damage (transforming while jumping on even ground for faster movement is allowed, transforming back in the air as an animal that doesn't take falling damage (bloodfly) is also allowed)

A18: charging a chargable spell, interrupting it by strafing and then quickly throwing the fully charged spell at an enemy

A19: Moving inside dialogues to avoid enemies or other dialogues (It is okay if a dialogue such as Buster's Acrobatics teaching cannot be skipped to reduce the time loss but not in any other circumstance.)

A20: transforming back after death

A21: manipulating AI by holding strafe while falling

A22: (Demo only) running off an edge without falling

²Partially clipping through small objects such as fences is ok und unavoidable.
But any gap in a solid wall that is smaller than the player model is not ok to clip through even if it is easy to do so.
Some gates look like they are composed of bars with gaps inbetween them that a meatbug could pass through. But they are in fact solid objects with a partially transparent texture. Going through such a gate as a meatbug violates this rule.

Clarification for map key use:

Any use of the map key is banned in Glitch-Restricted.

In No Major Glitches you can use the map key while standing or walking on the ground to put away weapons more quickly. You may not press the map button while in the air, while in a jumping animation, while sliding or while in a landing animation.

## Early Segmented Runs
The history of Gothic 1 speedruns starts with segmented runs. Years went by before someone tried to run Gothic in a no reset setting. The very first segmented speedrun was intentionally not using glitches and got shared on fan-forums in 2004 or 2005:

TheWonderer then followed this with a "bugrun" in early 2007. He killed the troll near the start with the shrink scroll to learn Acrobatics in the New Camp. At the tower he also grabbed speed potions from a chest and went to the temple and killed the orc priests mostly using the golem magic.

The challenge of beating Gothic 1 without taking any damage has been considered for a time, but the first known serious attempts have been done by Saradoc in 2017 with the first successful attempt on the 12th try:
