The English translation patch is not accepted for times on the board, being that it puts you at a strict disadvantage (the text is markedly slower, and it breaks the HP/MP refill at the end of the game, forcing you to have a Chimera Wing at the end). It does make for a perfectly valid practice tool, and more than a couple of current runners practiced on EN before moving to JP successfully.

The Japanese knowledge necessary to run this game is pretty low, and you don't actually need to know any Kanji at all! Everything you really need to know in the interface, you can find in this JP to EN reference: https://goo.gl/cMBg26
