Hi everyone. Over the past two weeks several new out of bounds setups have been discovered. You can check them in the pause frame document linked in the "Resources" page. These have massive implication for the Any% and Best Ending categories, as they add up to more than three minutes of potential time save in Any% (Normal) and close to two minutes in Best Ending (Normal). They also dramatically change the way the game is played, with up to nineteen levels out of thirty where you could use pause buffering and go out of bounds in Any% (Normal) instead of three levels previously.

I believe this is enough to warrant a category split. I propose to split between "Out of Bounds" (fastest completion with no restrictions) and "Inbounds" (levels completed the "intended" way). This would be implemented as a "Run Type" subcategory. Note that going out of bounds brings no advantage in the 100% category, so it would be unaffected.

I would also take this opportunity to reorganize the leaderboard regarding Normal/Easy difficulty. This would now be a "Difficulty" subcategory.

Below are the rules which would be associated to each subcateogry:

Normal Only use the normal-sized Helirin.

Easy Only use the small-sized Helirin.

Out of Bounds Clipping into walls and reaching duplicate goal zones are allowed.

Inbounds The center of the Helirin must always stay within the strict boundaries of the levels. Even clipping into a wall by one pixel is not allowed. If this happens then the current level must be restarted.

Let me know if you have any remarks or suggestions on the matter.

Hi! This behavior is known (albeit it's the first time I see it done in room 25). The game has a failsafe where if no enemy is inside the room while the key did not spawn, it spawns the key in front of the door. When only one enemy is left there are several ways to get its hitbox slighthly out of bounds with Thoreau. Here are some examples with the ceiling, a wall and the floor. Your case is close to the floor example. If the Chain Chomp was not on the floor you were indeed softlocked. This Chain Chomp is the sole reason why you should have at least 60,000 points by room 25. As long as your 1-1 point grind is decent (like over 30,000 points) you should be able to reach this point goal on time.

5:05.75 is the time from Power On. 4:57.93 is the time with speedrun.com timing.

It should not be because of your framerate. I guess that it has to do with alignment and you got unlucky. See, your character is moving at full speed at 6 pixels per frame and collisions are only checked frame per frame. Think about it as if Viridian's movement was not continuous, as if Viridian was doing a mini-teleportation on each frame. Thus depending on which horizontal position you started "modulo" 6 pixels before you hold left, you will be considered (or not) to hit the hitbox of the spikes at some point. For example if you fall down while you hug the left wall in the first green room and you hold left, then you will not hit the spikes in the blue room. Same if you were hugging the right wall in the first green room and then you hold left. However if you respawn from the checkpoint in the first green room and you hold left, then you WILL hit the spikes. All of this is because of your position modulo 6 pixels. Keep also in mind that if you stopped holding left at some point, it would change your alignment and you could be hitting the spikes in the blue room.

Hey, I think that a category where you get rid off the damage boosts would be interesting. As a result, I’m asking to include a new category on the leaderboards : « All main stars » = get a star in each of the 30 main levels. Some reasons why I think it would be a relevant category :

  • as you cannot damage boost anymore, the strats would be very different from the ones in the current categories
  • it is challenging, but it is still possible to go for races and no-reset runs (not like « no damage » which is a nicely challenging experience, albeit stupidly punishing)
  • it would look impressive to people new to the game (the problem with any% is that with all the damage taken they could think we play the game badly :p)
  • it is something meaningful in the game as it is the requirement to unlock Last Land
  • « All stars » would just add the tutorial levels (which are useless) and the Last Land levels (which are horrible if you don’t want to get hit), so I would prefer « All Main Stars » but we can discuss that :)

Rules for « All Main Stars (Normal) » would be, for example :

  • Get a star in each of the 30 main levels (you get a star when you complete the level without getting hit).
  • You don't have to save all the birds.
  • Only use the big stick.
  • Timing begins when you select « Normal » difficulty, and ends once you enter the goal in Ghost Castle 3.

I already did a run of it in 16m52s, so that the leaderboard would not be empty ;)

So I have been running this game for several days and I am really enjoying it, but today I have found out that the game probably runs slower on an European Wii than on an American one... Here is how I found out : I compared the first cutscene between my PB video and three "American" PBs (360Chrism, Airshock22 and Lime_Flavored_Dragon) and in all cases the cutscene runs faster at the same rate (I lose around 6s in a minute). Then I compared with TheErgkjr's PB and the cutscene runs at the same speed as in my PB. Maybe it something like a difference between PAL and NTSC, 50/60Hz I don't know. My question is : is this true ? If yes, then I feel like there should be something to make notice this difference, be it a sentence in the rules (something like "American version is preferred since it runs faster") or separating the leaderboard. I felt a huge disappointment when I discovered that by myself, I do not want anybody to feel the same in the future...

I agree, I see no harm in creating a misc category.
