Woops, switched from private video to unlisted, it should work now
Hello,
I came back from Patagonia, a wonderful place to discover. The silence of its trees, the outrageousness of its mountains, the pride of its birds, and me.
At some point in my life I seeked the goal of getting all the world records on Infogrames games. Actually, only old generation consoles Smurfs, Tintin, Lucky Luke, Spirou, and Asterix. So, I looked on this website the already existing records. I remember that on all the games listed, there were only two runs I didn't know if I could do better. The first one was the SNES Astérix & Obélix in Easy by Traviktox. Amazingly, this run has been improved since. The second one was the 5:56 by Kirua. I remember thinking : "Why would I play a game that, if ever I beat the record, I could only cut a few frames ?". How happy was I to cut a second ! Now, look where we are : 6 seconds. If I had been told that at the time, I would've think that there could've only been a major breakthrough. And yet, there was no major breakthrough. Even if Kirua's execution was excellent, all the little routing optimizations and the grinding made such a difference.
I had so much fun playing this game, but now is my time to stop speedrunning. It's very time consuming, and I prefer to spend less time on computer. Why would I sit here while the Tierra del Fuego rivers are flowing ?
Congratulations Mad_Max, you produced a wonderful run. I guess it required much work and stubborness. I like to believe that such a run wouldn't exist without my challenge, and I'm happy the game reached such a level. I wish you improve the run even further, so here is some knowledge maybe you don't have.
When you arrived on this game, I spent much time optimizing the route. I even did a human theory TAS to compare different strats. When you look at the TAS by Aglar & Randil (), the major difference with a human play is the 3-2 strat, not using the OOB. At first, this strat seems unusable because of the multiple frame perfect jumps. However, I found a route that is hard but doable. At first, I was doing this :
, which is very hard, but saves 1s over the classic OOB strat. I spent very much time grinding for a run with this strat, and even got a run to 4-3... This strat is very hard because of the flame. It's not possible to manipulate the flame, it is based on a timer from the start of the level. If you step on it, it won't shoot, but doesn't delay the cycle. So I found another strat, faster and safer :
It saves 1.2s, and you reach sooner the flame so it's easier.
I wish you all good luck and lots of fun :)
NB : why do you punch at 2-2 start ? :D NB2 : if you need health, you could use my 5:52 strat on 2-1 2nd snowman
Hello !
Sounds like a good idea, but I don't know how different these runs would be from any% hard. Do you already have runs ?
My opinion is that they should be treated as different games. Of course they should be at least in different categories, but I suspect a mistake from mod team ?
Ah yeah I understand, that's clever :)
On level 2-1, 4th snowman jump is frame perfect On level 2-2, 3rd snowman jump is 2 frames window
Ah ok I see. This jump is a 2 frames window, so it's not that easy indeed.
Can't wait to see your new PB, but still refering to 5m 54s 033ms run :
On level 2-1, 4th snowman : You do a strat that only works if the snowman shoots low, so I guess that if you take a damage, you hope that the last snowman will be nice ?
On level 2-2, 3rd snowman It seems that if this snowman shoots high, you will take a damage. Does that mean the run is dead if that happens ?
Hello
I have a question for Mad_Max about his PB run.
It's about level 1-3, on 3rd catapult. This catapult can either shoot high or low, and I believe that is RNG. My strat is to jump above the fire, which handles both situations. However, you just run straight, and you don't even try to jump. You don't get hit because the catapult shoots high, but you would've got hit if it had shot low. So I'm guessing you knew the catapult would shoot high ? How ?
Congratz Max :)
What video file format are you using ? I record using OBS, but it seems that virtualdub can't read flv or mp4 :(
I agree with displaying milliseconds only under a certain threshold (5.55 I guess).
Unfortunately I have no local recording of my run. Your recommendation is to download from twitch and use virtualdub ? Never used it but I will try.
Hey o/
Maybe we can ask for future runs on emulator to :
- define what emulators are allowed
- display frame count and inputs
- reset between runs
- define a clear start and end
For now, I'm ok with having approximate milliseconds on Mad_Max's run and mine, in order to have a different ranking.
Let's also post here strats that are tas only, it will be useful for future tasers :) (a tas is currently being worked on)
Let's put here all the skips/strats that are not in my run (console) :
Train :
Little optimization
Fast fall
River :
Fast start
Cave :
Little optimization
Snow :
Faster way to reach platform
Snowball skip
Plane :
Animation skip + Damage skip on 2nd rope
Climbing :
Not sure if useful
Blizzard :
Snow skip
Yeti :
Shadow despawn
Hello,
I have a problem with Monkey King moderation (https://www.speedrun.com/Monkey_King). It's been more than a month since I submitted my run. I contacted the moderator on twitter without getting an answer. I posted a message on the moderator stream chat, which he noticed, but nothing was done. I guess the moderator forgot to verify my run, but it's no fun spamming his chat to get it done. Can anyone do something please ?

Invincibility glitch creates multiple soflocks in every level, but more importantly, it prevents you from using your stick when reaching the Nezha level. Even if you can still use the special attack, it is not sufficient to kill Nezha (you can only store 5 shots), resulting in a soft lock.
-
Death loop after defeating Ao Guang. It seems that going up before the screen fades out, and during the cutscene (?) prevents the softlock from happening

Fight with the monk :
Glad I didn't wait for an answer xD
I do agree that L+R should be banned in general
Okay, I think we agree that old and new versions can't have the same leaderboard.
Now, should I create new categories here ? Or should it be a new game ?
In my opinion, all the categories for the new version can also apply to the old version, so we should just duplicate the categories for old version
