On GC, just record your gameplay, of course. For time you want to use IGT and add deaths and restarts to the final time, submit that IGT for review and then the verification team would have to retime any pauses in the run to calculate your V1 time. At least that's my understanding. This makes GC slightly more labor to retime but so few people run it so it's not a huge deal.
I'd suggest joining the discord and asking for help if you get stuck. If you're on PC you'll want to be using livesplit's autosplitter for this game, it should show up automatically if you set the game title properly. The autosplitter handles timing for you. I'd also recommend checking the resources section on here and grabbing just about everything from there that's relevant to what you'll be doing. If you are on any platform besides PC, god help you.
Battle DLC is only relevant in categories like 180 emblems or any% where you need to enter 2p battle of chao karate. By all means, if you want to save a bit of money, feel free to not buy that DLC. The only version that is banned is emulation.
That would make sense if we ever timed this game from boot, which we don't. personally It would be much faster either way but very very very tedious to have to reset it up every time before each run. I think that would really kill the enjoyment of the game, which is at least half of the point of speedrunning. there's nothing difficult about setting this up, it just would add maybe 30 seconds at the start of every attempt to leaving the lobby (to remove the otherwise semi-permanent effects of the glitch) rejoining the lobby plus any setup, starting the timer, entering hole one of whatever course you're doing (plus loading the level), getting a fast hole in one and setting up the glitch, then entering and doing hole one again.
For basic quality of life for anyone interested in the game, I'd suggest we just allow it to be setup beforehand. I come from a game where we eventually allowed mods and pregame setup to be done that made it possible to restart runs in 2 seconds instead of 20. sounds like a small difference but it really made running that game a lot more enjoyable for everyone, while basically not changing the run at all.
requiring us to time setup would actually make this game less competitive since we don't have a load remover yet and this would add an additional loading screen. also making the runs more tedious to set up for no reason is anti competitive because it will literally drive prospective runners away from the game by making resets much more punishing.
Sorry for the wall of text, I just really cannot agree.
This makes the game so much more intense. what a find.
Emulators aren't allowed for speedruns, but using it for practice can be pretty good for certain things. You only need the "battle DLC" if you are running 180 emblems.
This makes more sense than the full game TBH.
yeah, I saw that. I was wondering how to actually run it.
I would like to do runs with the new route and I need to know how to get this patch running, thanks!
If anything we should make separate categories for it. If anyone does a run category with it, we could consider adding it to the boards.
apparently the link expired, here's a new one. https://discord.gg/HEAwB5M
As many of you know, I originally set up this page. I do not think that should grant me the ultimate authority on how this page is run, since I haven't always been the most active runner. If community members agree that we need some major changes, I'm happy to listen to that and help out. If you ever feel like you deserve a change in leadership because I'm frequently inactive, I'll understand and we could elect a new admin.
Currently this page is admittedly a bit of a mess. This is mostly due to the nature of a game that is still being updated and what that means for speedrunning. It is also because this is a sandbox game with no defined endgame, and so we can only compete in arbitrary challenges. I'm thinking maybe we'll remove all of the empty categories, and only add new ones after someone does a run of it and requests we add it.
This game has a very small community. I personally think having a strict hierarchy within this community doesn't really make sense, so I'm going to do everything I can to lower myself to the same status as everyone else despite my admin status. That means I won't be taking any action unless most of us discuss it and agree first.
If you want your time on the boards, you need a recording, That's final. As for the rest of the mods, You can run whatever mods you want if you think people will compete in it, but for simplicity's sake, if you want a run on the SRcom leaderboards, you should keep it vanilla. I'm not opposed to the idea of creating a category that allows certain mods, but all of the categories currently listed are vanilla. This game isn't super active for speedrunning, and I want to foster some good competition here. I also don't want to have the ultimate opinion on this just because I set up the boards, if the community wants a change I will help with that.
If you want to do practice runs and such that don't go on the boards, obviously everything is fair game. Whatever you think will ease the process of learning the run.
After seeing the way the IL leaderboard is structured, I agree is doesn't belong on the main page, but perhaps Story style ILs should go here. We shouldn't allow faking upgrade collection or anything, actually collect upgrades, and certain stages would be redundant to add, but there's a lot of interesting tech used in some story style ILs that would be cool to showcase here. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
I want to do this, but do not currently have a halfway decent setup for mouse + Keyboard. So I've been putting it off.
I was wondering what are the odds we would allow a mod that changes emerald pieces to blue instead of green? I think it's not fair that some people have a disadvantage spotting free pieces, and it would foster better competition to allow blue emerald pieces.
I also currently think kerbal engineer shouldn't be allowed and I'm considering removing Scott's time from the LB. The thing is, it just gives you way too much useful information you otherwise wouldn't have. I'm also at the point where I think if you are going to be taking this game seriously as a speedrun, you should just keep it fully stock.
Yo! I just checked up on the leaderboards, noticed you cut my PB in half. I'm really hyped about this and I think I'll give it a shot at some point.
You can run the game all you want on emulator, it just wont go up on the leaderboard. If you want to spend 2 months practicing on EMU while you wait for the steam sale, go for it, it's not like we'll ban you for that, nothing is off limits with practice.
Would that be an IL or a shortened category? I've always thought that good places to shorten the main run to would be collecting 2 or 4 of the sea charts. I personally find the temple of the ocean king to be the most fun part of the game, so it makes sense to have a run category that ends right after the 4th sea chart.
Keep in mind, I'm not a serious runner of this game because I don't have any way to capture it, so I don't really need to be included in any decision.
