So if you are using an emulator like Bizhawk. You do get some cool advantages that are beneficial for running this game in this mode. For instance this is my setup with the controller.

Even though to activate the 6 button mode you need two controllers with button mapping you only need to use one with an emulator. If you map the Player 2 Up and C to some unused button like "BACK" or "L Trigger" or whatever, and Player 1's Mode button to that same button you can easily activate 6 button mode. Just hold that button while having the "Options" selected in the start menu then press start. Make sure to hold it until the options menu pops up. If you did it right you will see the top label be "Option" instead of "Options".

Also you should not map the kunai button for the No Kunai mode. And of course you can move around what buttons do what with the button mapping.

Guess it really is just the last two bosses that have that softlocking. So basically just don't press anything until the fight begins or during transitions. Don't press the ninjitsu button especially.

Well the splitters work for the ps3 at least. I used a nasty s-video component for one game I played. The video and audio came out as nasty as expected. Not recommended if you can avoid it.

@SilentStorm Yea looks like you can skip attacks, was watching someone play the game a couple hours in. But my god Super Taisen X game seems so story heavy. It is like they cannot stop talking. Not sure if you HAVE to watch some of those moves. Some moves are almost a full minute for a single round of an attack. At least the attack effects look fantastic and the music is great. Dark Wizard has super long animation attacks too, they would easily add hours to your gameplay if you played causally. @WhatTheFox_ Those seem like solid pretty short games and there are people that are really into those. There are WAY worse games to speedrun. @Slevanas GOW 1 was one of my favorites for a while. Beat that on the hardest difficulty. Speedrunning that would be horrific, because yea there are issues that can screw you over. I do remember the wretches driving me crazy a couple times.I might have even had that glitch happen to me with those wretches early on, pretty sure I had to restart there. Think I remember an issue with a door not opening at some point. The bats seemed really iffy too sometimes around the edges. The super aim of the AI, and the weird explosion radii, the sneaky exploding wretches that would kill you in one hit even after you rolled away... ahhh you are making me remember the trauma. That seems like a good candidate for a segmented run since the game likes screwing you over so much, think I watched one that a couple years back.

At least from my experience a lot of glitches are just "found" when someone notices some oddity. What might be more useful would be for speedrunners to submit glitches that happen in their runs, and see if anybody could help them reproduce it, or help explain it. This would be effective for games with very small communities.. But for an active game community it would be best shared within the community since it would be full of experts on the game anyway.

Yes you are completely right. I wish the game would not spray out those kunai like that. The most important point of using the 6 button mode however is to be very careful about inputs during entrances and phase transitions of some bosses. You can easily hardlock the game. Not all of them have that awful property but enough do to make it a real problem and something to keep in mind. Of note are the 2nd to last, and last boss. Later I can make a list of the bosses that hardlock under this mode.

@RashoCEuX TAS, tool assisted runs use things such as save states and sometimes impossible input (left +right) to get an extremely short times that compete in the frame range. TAS runs should go onto a site like tasvideos.org , while speedrun.com is for speedruns with human possible input without tools. If you really meant just a normal run, and you submitted it, then it could take up to three weeks usually. If not you should maybe try to contact the mods directly on discord/twitch/youtube whatever.

@Famicom Tom and Gerry is not one I heard of as being bad before, but sloppy play controls and bad collisions can make things really suck. For speedruns your other points are on target. @SilentStorm Score Attack is kind of interesting, but speedrunning a score attack is not typically what is done. Might be interesting depending on the game? @LuckyLovesChuChu I agree Hearts sucks. What would a speedrun for that even be? A single game? @finnaboing Mario Party does seem like a lot of RNG. Think it was mentioned. @TheMadWasp What is bad about Game Dev Tycoon? @Vultus That sounds like a great contender for the top spot. My brother loved Roller Coaster Tycoon when it came out too. About 185 hours of wasted time doing nothing for each attempt sounds nuts!

Wanted to watch a full speedrun, but looks like there is an entry on the leaderboards but no video, not even a screenshot of anything. It's a real shame.

I completed a run based off of Faust4712 run. So could we have a category for No Kunai?

@EmeraldAly Submitted runs might have issues that are found after acceptance. This happened in my case where I had a setting wrong in an emulator, and I had to redo a couple runs. In that case removal by myself would have worked fine if the mods had not "rejected" that. Edit: changed to "reject"

@Lonne How loud is that keyboard compared to a non mechanical keyboard? Think I could bring that to work and not have my coworkers kill me?

United StatesCoolHandMike5 years ago

Well some controllers are built like garbage. Make sure to look at reviews. The controller you get should be appropriate to the games you play. A NES classic controller should work fine for game with very few inputs such as NES or Atari style games, but not for more modern ones like PS4 games. No one is going to speedrun Monster Hunter with an NES Classic. On the other hand having a controller with many inputs like the Xbox PC Controller is fine for simple games since you are covered. I don't recommend that one since both the wired and wireless one had issues after about 5 months.

Also many PC games are better played with keyboard and mouse like FPS or RTS games. Controllers simply do not allow the precision, fast control, or breadth of commands of keyboard and mouse.

I have been rolling with this: https://www.amazon.com/Controller-Gamepad-Computer-Windows-Android/dp/B00OAYHIRA lately. While they are not super well built, but they work well for the price. Last one lasted like 6 months. You can also get adapters for older console controllers if you liked any of those. I am not going to recommend any since I don't want people to buy up the remaining supply and increase the price...

For a keyboard I am using a mechanical keyboard. Far and away the best keyboard I have ever used. https://www.amazon.com/Orion-Spectrum-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B01BBKYM3I?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-d-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B01BBKYM3I.

My mouse is some cheap thing, but it has been surprisingly sturdy and works well enough. I have the 2000 DPI version since mine I guess is older: https://www.amazon.com/Redragon-Gaming-Buttons-Ergonomic-CENTROPHORUS/dp/B00HTK1NCS/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1546814631&sr=1-7&keywords=redragon+mouse

@Peacefroggie Way to stick with it! @Krayzar Nice observation. Paying attention and trying new things really does help understanding games. @Komrade Yea...I see your Link to the Past run up there. Submitted 1 month ago. Also you run Baldur's Gate? I need to finish that...it's on my pile. @HowlingSnail I know the feeling. Got really lucky in my Megaman 2 The Power Fighters run. Got really lucky with early powerup from the girl, and one of the best patterns from The Yellow Devil. @7Storm Why not submit your run? @TheMadWasp You are a perfectionist I take it. @SpiderHako Maybe someone else has had that bug happen to them to. Might be worth looking around. @Novawolf Nice. The sense of progress feels good when stuff like that happens. @Novaeu Sounds rough what game was that? @finnaboing Ahah maybe take it easy? Just take a break if you are getting frustrated. Good job though.
