How random are the page spawns? I find a page (almost) always spawns on the tree, however, pages are less frequent on other landmarks. Is this likely true or is it all in my head?

I find the most difficult factor when it comes to speedrunning this game isn't the actual difficulty, just the amount of tries it takes to finally get the right spawns.

Over 200 attempts for me so far and I haven't even gotten the pages on all the landmarks I need.

Hello Halen,

I takes me several hundred attempts to find pages on the 8 landmarks I want for my runs. The RNG in this run is pretty terrible to work with. I do not know the exact probabilities of pages being on each landmark, but it does appear to be related to how many page locations exist on each landmark.

In version 0.9.1 (the version I use to run), there are this many page spawns on each site: Tree: 3 Car and Shed: 3 Blue Tanker: 1 Tunnel: 3 Pillars: 3 Cross Walls: 4 Middle Tankers: 8 Bathrooms: 4 Rocks: 4 Silo: 4 *I have only seen 2 page spawns in bathrooms, but that is because I've only ever checked 2 areas. It is likely that there are 4 spots where pages can spawn on this landmark. (I have seen all the rest.)

With this in mind, I've noticed that on Middle Tankers there is almost always a page since there are 8 places for it to spawn. Alternatively, there are many runs which I lose at the Blue Tanker because it only has 1 page spawn.

If you want the absolute best odds of getting pages, you should design a path that avoids Blue Tanker and some landmark with only 3 spawns. But I doubt there exists such a path fast enough to WR.

You are absolutely right that there is little difficulty in doing the run. Out of about 1000 runs, I have only died in a handful of them. You just have to keep grinding until you get the spawns you need.

Thank you so much for such an informative reply! I had my suspicions about the blue tanker / truck. It is almost always the reason I have to reset because the preceding landmarks both have multiple spots for the page to spawn, thus making it more likely to have a page.

I have one question about how you attempt the WR route: If the page on the tree is not in sight immediately, do you reset, or do you check behind? I used to do it but it added about a second or two on the run.

As you may know, there are 2 page spawns you can see when walking towards the tree and 1 page on the back. If I do not see a page on either of the 2 front spawns, I path to the left and check the back. This costs time like you said, but currently the WR can easily be beaten while still checking the back.

I look at the run as a cost-benefit analysis. The more conditions you add, the less likely you'll get a viable run. Here's a list of conditions for the perfect speedrun using the WR route:

  1. Page on the right side of tree
  2. Page on the back of the shed (path straight to the back of the shed instead of checking the other 2 spots)
  3. Page on the closest tanker at the Middle Tankers landmark
  4. Page on the right pillar closest to Middle Tankers
  5. Page on the front of Cross Walls

Add as many conditions as you want, but keep in mind that the chance you get all 5 of these in a single run is exceedingly low. Like you said many of your runs will end on landmark 3 alone, so adding in these caveats can be a bit troublesome. I guess it all depends on how much time you're willing to spend doing runs.
