It's best to make a copy of the Gothic folder and move it out of the "Programs"/Steam folder as the write protection can mess with the installation of the patches.

## How to Play

Most current releases include the addon "Night of the Raven".

Steam's version is a fan-made mod with additional changes.

The mods available on the Steam Workshop or WorldofGothic also do not fully restore the original game.

To play the original pre-addon Gothic 2 you can use this download: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/2/folders/1JGgZc4mR1I60X-b86BY7dd4NXcV2EkCF

Simply copy the Data and System folder into your Gothic 2 folder.

Alternatively you can also buy it digitally at https://gamersgate.com/DD-GOTHIC2/gothic-ii or use an old CD box release.

## Patches

First download:

Then install:

- VisualCppRedist_AIO_x86_x64.exe
- Union Primary Universal 05.02.2022.exe
- Union 1.0k 03.05.2021.exe

And copy the contents of the appropriate folders into your Gothic folder and choose to overwrite:
- "copy into every game"
- "copy into G2 Classic folder"

You then should have the ingame timer in the top left and version "2C S5.0 U1.0k" in the bottom right of the menu.

The dragoncounter glitch only works on non-English versions. Select "German Scripts" in the GothicStarter to enable it.

## Gothic.ini & Systempack.ini

The Gothic.ini and Systempack.ini are located in the Gothic\system folder.

You can do any changes to your Gothic.ini in video, audio, input etc., but do NOT change anything that would give a gameplay advantage like potion hotkeys, quick saves, inventory settings, etc.

Recommended settings:

playLogoVideos=0

zStartupWindowed=0

If you want to reset your Gothic.ini, just delete it and start the game and a new one will appear.
You can also change anything in the Systempack.ini, but all gameplay-altering settings are disabled by the speedrun.patch file.

## limiting FPS

Many things won't work, if your FPS go too high.

Download dxtory: http://exkode.com/dxtory-downloads-en.html

1. Run dxtory.
2. Go to the 8th tab (Advanced).
3. Put a checkmark at "Limit Video FPS" and enter the desired value.

You must keep the program open to have the effect.

## Livesplits with ingame timer

- Rick click "LiveSplit.exe" and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and choose "Run as Administrator".
- Open Livesplit
- Right click -> Compare Against -> Game Time
- Right click -> Edit Layout
- Add Control -> Scriptable Auto Splitter
- Set the Script Path to "gothic.asl".

## frozen screen on videos and loading screens

You can fix this by running the game in the compatibility mode for an older Windows version, but that will increase loading times and lag.

Most releases with "Gold" in the name including Steam & GoG won't let you play this.

The "Classic Mod" for Night of the Raven doesn't fully restore the original game and its physics.

Install the patches in order. Then move the Data & System folders into the Gothic 2 folder and choose to overwrite.


2. German scripts

And then unpack it into Gothic II\_work\data and choose overwrite.
If you play glitchless, you don't need it.


3. Gothic.ini & Systempack.ini (optional)
Go to Gothic II\system and open Gothic.ini. Then set
playLogoVideos=0
If you want, you can change the way trader inventory switching works via:
invSplitScreen=0
You can also do other changes to your ini in video, audio, input etc., but do NOT change anything that would give a gameplay advantage like window animations, potion hotkeys, quick saves, inventory settings, etc.
If you want to reset your Gothic.ini, just delete it and start the game and a new one will appear.
Also you can go to Gothic II\system and open Systempack.ini and change anything there.


4. limiting FPS

How to activate devmode in the Demo

If you have a German game and keybord, simply type "mücke" on the status screen (B). Make sure none of the keys are assigned to the status screen (C is by default). Otherwise:

- Download this: https://www.speedrun.com/tools/Demo_Devmode_ggr3o.rar
- Go to your Gothic 2 Demo folder and place the gothic.ini in the system folder.*
- Start devmode.exe. (Or install AutoHotkey and use devmode.ahk.)
- In the game press Ctrl+M.
- Try if it worked by pressing F8.


*Or do it manually:
- In your Gothic 2 folder enter the "system" folder, open "gothic.ini" and search for the "keyboardLayout" entry and set it to:
keyboardLayout=00000407
- In the control settings, make sure B is bound to the status screen and neither M, C, K nor E are bound to it.

In 2023 maciolo69 discovered how to kill the dragons without first obtaining the Eye of Innos in Night of the Raven using Fire Rain. For a long while this new trick was not used in Classic since the method was inconsistent for an unknown reason. In 2024 Milgar completed the first run with a different method using Fear. To obtain the Fear scroll he first started chapter 3 to be able to buy them.

- FPS MUST be limited to a value of 240 or less.
