I enjoyed the article. Though, I would like to offer corrections on how the exploit actually works.

Firstly, the first five object slots only occupies what the game considers enemies and some special objects in the sixth slot such as powerups.

By filling 5/6 slots, the long firebar loads its second half into an incorrect part of memory due to the DuplicateEnemyObj subroutine not checking if it's going out of the Enemy Flag region ($0F to $14) and fills in the first 00 byte.

The first loop fills in unused memory, but if you turn a paratroopa into a normal koopa troopa then its ID will be stored as 00 in the enemy type region of memory ($16 to $1B), which spawns in a glitched enemy with the ID of $84 in this case, which jumps to $0747 in RAM, very close to where controller 1 and 2 inputs are stored ($074A and $074B). This is explained in greater detail in the submission text for the current game end glitch TAS. (https://tasvideos.org/9613S)

As for how the current RTA setup works, I'm not qualified to discuss that as my research was towards the TAS, this would be better answered by those who were involving in discovering the current setup.

I think the input handling concern is a valid one to bring up and discuss, however I don't think it's one the SMB1 mod team will lose sleep over though as the highest level time performed on switch currently is a 4:56 (4:55.9 console time) by Cyanogen. Doesn't mean someone won't try and use Switch input handling to their advantage but I would also guess most submissions which are not either console or emu, are on Switch, so it would be majorly unfair to ban people to the most accessible means to play SMB1 on a modern Nintendo platform.

output mods such as composite video mods and rgb mods have always been approved for submissions, look at runs by Kosmic, iBall, GTAce, DJ__AJ, etc. as it only affects the video output of the console, not the game.

You can get clones of the RetroTink such as the RetroScaler 2X for about $50, but I cannot comment on their quality due to not testing them and would not advise supporting those clone manufacturers if you can afford the higher quality alternatives.

This is not to be patched onto a standard SMB ROM, rather a VS SMB ROM in the ".nes" file format.

Looking at the hardware present on the FDS2NES it has the same hardware as the regular FDS RAM adapter, I would not have any objections to approving this however this will require discussion with other moderators.

Scotlandweb200011 months ago

That can work, if you have an actual NES, however 1008 was referring to the actual FDS RAM adapter which looks like this File:Nintendo-Famicom-Disk-System-RAM-Adapter-1.jpg - Wikimedia Commons

There is a new alternative to the FDSStick which is being mass produced by various companies called the FDSKey, uses a MicroSD card to read FDS images to the RAM adapter.

As Wolf said, no we do not allow reproduction cartridges. Our testing shows that most sold by individuals are inaccurate compared to the disk version, even with simple gameplay elements such as the red piranha plants and springs. If you wish to play Lost Levels on NES then you either purchase a Everdrive N8 (or clone).

This just sounds like a more complicated version of both quests.

Can confirm, I used to use a KrzysioCart until I purchased an EverDrive, Pellsson 5.6 works as expected on it.

Hey!

Unfortunately I don't know of a place for high quality controllers however if you are a DIY sort, you can buy replacement rubber membranes and that may assist with your dropped A presses. Websites such as ZedLabz, Console5 and AliExpress will all have these parts readily available, though do note you will need a PH1 screwdriver, and be careful not to strip the screws.

If you have any other questions please let me know!
