Converter, the game i've been running on and off for the past month is now on the site : https://www.speedrun.com/converter

It's a 3D platforming/exploration game, one of its quirks is that your movement is dependent on your stats (speed, height of jump, precision of your aim, damage resistance...) that you can increase by picking up orbs scattered throughout the map, which can make for some interesting routing

from what i understand this game is a solo project by a bosnian developper, and i don't think it got a lot of attention so i'd be happy to see more people giving it a try as it is a neat little game (it's available on Steam for 10€)

hope i didn't go to hard on the advertisement, it feels a bit weird to recommend a game that isn't free when most of the games in this thread are

Buzz. Buzz.

But I, entelechy, form of forms, am I by memory because under everchanging forms.

I that sinned and prayed and fasted.

A child Conmee saved from pandies.

I, I and I. I.

(for some reason i can't @ "Kai.", it doesn't read the dot at the end and instead it @ the user "Kai")

First a minor gripe : Athena wasn't birthed from her own skull but from Zeus' skull, you seem to alter the narrative of the myth in order to justify your statement which also tries to alter reality : "Nobody made memes." As if memes happened without any human intervention. Somewhere sometime someone saw/thought about an elongated cat and said to themselves "haha funny let's make a picture of this and share it online" and thus the seed was planted, by somebody.

Furthermore it is somewhat confusing that you use the myth of Thamus and Theuth to introduce the language as a poison/remedy since the myth has nothing to do with mimèsis but is all about memory and how written language changes men's relationship with information. In fact you evoke the notion of pharmakon without really explaining why it applies to the addition of language to memes (as memorization in't an issue here), and you immediately drop it to focus on Plato's mimèsis without really explaining how one ties into the other.

It seems that you're main point is to criticize how memes have gone further in mimetic degree (a copy of a copy of a copy...) but their mimetic quality is exactly what you praise in the first paragraph, their reflexiveness, their meaninglessness : they're literally just here to be shared amongst fellow internet users and be copied over and over ad nauseam. I would argue against what your thesis seems to be and say that the addition of written word does not represent another degree in mimesis, quite the opposite.

"the captioned cat, is at an infinite remove from the Godcat" No it isn't. We're counting the steps, the degrees, remember ? It was twice, no thrice removed before the addition of words on the picture, so now what ? Four times removed ? Nope. Because in both cases the mimèsis doesn't take from the same source.

When Plato talks about writing as a mimèsis he's referring to the spoken word, live language, a discussion that can adapt to its interlocutors and react to their interventions. The written language is the pale copy of this as it can only try to imitate the spoken word for it cannot answer any direct questions of the reader or reformulate itself, it cannot account for all the intonations, gestures and all those subtle nuances that punctuate live speech.

Thus the written word is mimetic of the spoken word, it is not mimetic of any real or ideal object in the sense that the picture of the chair imitates the chair which itself imitates in turn the idea of the chair that the artisan had in mind when he made the chair. Written language is only a first degree copy from its source : spoken language. If i write about a picture of a cat this isn't third degree mimèsis of the idea of a cat, it is first degree mimèsis of the spoken equivalent of my sentence (i have an idea of myself talking about a picture of a cat and i transcribe it).

Back to Longcat and Can I Has. You explained that the Longcat meme is a third degree copy (idea>animal>picture>copy of the picture) and following the same logic i'd argue Can I Has is only a second degree copy. Indeed, by adding words to the picture and implying the cat is talking this new meme is referring to something else than a real life cat : a fictive character (the hungry somewhat illiterate but (arguably) cute talking cat), it creates a narrative, and this fictional setting in which the narrative takes place is the idea from which it stems. Which leaves us with this hierarchy : idea of a fictional meme cat > original Can I Has > the meme as it spreads from threads to threads contaminating forever our perception of memes (and cats potentially).

So while i don't disagree with your point entirely i think that it is somewhat misguided : what you're ranting against is not the mimèsis but quite the opposite : a lack of this mimetic simplicity that used to be all the internet needed to meme the memes and be amused.

In fact we could now tie it all together with the concept of the pharmakon : the mimèsis is the remedy, the simple entertainment without any pretention, ctrl + C ctrl + V, the meme is meme, it is here to be memed and yet it is the poison that bores us through repetition, poisoning itself even (hence the dead memes, F). We try to remedy to it, building a narrative, adding words, and complexity and yet again the remedy becomes the poison as the more we add meaning to the memes the more its shallow nature shines through and threatens to cast a dark light on the emptyness of our own lives. The meme reveals itself to us for what it is : a copy, and that which it is copying holds little, if any, meaning...

That being said :

@Merl_ not yet, it still needs a couple more shitposts and some more complaining about ELO and then it'll get there

also one of the fun parts of speedrunning is about discovering unintended exploits and skips, i think that what makes speedrunning entertaining is how different the speedrun can be from a casual playthrough and you won't have that with a game that's entirely tailored around speedrunning

the "crime front" part reminded me of a dream i had a couple months ago : i was an apprentice beekeeper and my master went on an errand so i was left alone to explore and i went into a little thicket which became more like a small wood and hidden in it was a zoo, i quickly realized this was a place for rare animal trafficking, someone saw me as i was snooping around and i ran out of the wood and immediately into a suburban looking area (even though the dream clearly started in the countryside) eventually i ran into my master which offered me water from his gourd, it was fresh and delicious - the end

hell yeah ! it's always interesting to see what can happen when you set some arbitrary rules/challenges, sometimes speedrunning is like playing a completely different game !

anyway, welcome aboard !

i enjoy going out of bounds so any 3D game especially if there's a jump button, i also find puzzle platformers have good potential for skips in general

probably not very interesting but i found an OOB in the house where the Alley Key is, it allows you to skip the first clock puzzle, however you can't go back in the alley since the door isn't open. i've been able to downgrade the game version to patch 1 (available in steam betas) and thus i was able to use the old clip to go back above the alley and enter the clock house (it's possible to interact with this door while oob). Alas the clock won't let you get the Key To Hell before you first get the Death Key which means you still have to do both clock puzzles in order to access the next area. so that only skips the Alley cutscene which isn't that long and since going oob is slower than walking it wouldn't save much (if any) time.

kinda pointless but maybe someone can use this somehow
