This needs to be discussed, considering there were a few runs submitted without video. I accepted them as we don't have an official rule about this yet. There are basically three ways to do this:
A: Require video for everything B: Don't require it at all C: Only require video if someone claims WR
Personally, I'd go with C for RTA runs and A for ILs, but I want to hear some more opinions on this.
I have a question about a category in Beetle Adventure Racing:
There's the category called "Bonus Circuit, max points", where you have to get all 100 points in each level while winning Bonus Circuit. I would love to show it off because it's pretty much the master category of this game, but at the same time, it might be too inconsistent for a marathon. The reason for this is that the AI has strong rubberbanding and will pass you if you make mistakes. You have to be ranked at least third after each race or you'll get a game over. If you're a minute behind in a race, you'll get disqualified immediately. This might not sound like much of a problem for a speedrun, but in this case it is. Getting all the boxes scattered throughout the levels requires perfect driving and the physics can easily mess things up. A lot of times you'll be forced to turn around after you miss a box, because there's no second chance to get it.
Maybe it is possible for me to get consistent at finishing Bonus Circuit with this, but if it is too random, I have an idea how to still show off the category at a marathon: There's a cheat that allows you to have the bonus boxes in time trial, which is used for 100 points ILs by the community. So the backup plan for an RTA run would be to get all points in time trial, where you can always finish the run. Would this "fake category" be allowed at the marathon?
Sorry for the wall of text...
My opinion on the questions brought up by Paddy:
Video proof and emulator This should be just like balloon races, require video and ban emu. Although I do think it's acceptable to put old records without video on the leaderboard, just mention it in a comment to not confuse people.
Shortcut The problem here is that we can only add a variable for the entire leaderboard. But no one is ever going to run RTA categories separately without shortcuts and the leaderboard would look terrible. So unless the site is updated to support adding variables only for a specific section of a leaderboard, it would be best to either ban or allow shortcuts for all time trial times.
It kind of sucks in my opinion that twitch partners get such an extra for an external site.
Just a small thing about subcategories: Can you make it so they are also marked as empty when they have no runs, just like regular categories?
Only wanting to run games where it's "possible to WR on" is not really a good way to start. Most of the games where this is the case either have no runners or an inactive community. The best approach is to run games that you have fun to play, no matter if they have a huge community with super optimized WRs or no speedrunning history.
That makes sense and seems to be the best approach :)
Sucks that there is no good solution to this. I'm leaning towards allowing it, it would just make things so much easier.
I'm not sure, I can't make him 8th place even when displaying all platforms.
Hi there. I'm from the community of Star Wars Episode I: Racer (currently two active runners ^^) and I'm looking for help about some technical stuff regarding the game. Maybe some of the PC runners here can help. This is the situation:
The newest runner of this game, JichiSenpai. plays on PC, which is far better than the N64 version I use. We don't directly compare the two versions for a number of reasons, like N64 having a slower way of starting boosts and of course lag. Our problem now is, that we found out that the framerate seems to affect the games physics in some ways. Unlike a lot of older PC games, this has nothing to do with very high framerates, instead, it's beneficial to play at 30 fps (the game normally caps at 60). Some skips are apparently easier that way.
So why is this a problem? Because there's no setting to play at a lower framerate, this can only be done with external tools. And I'm skeptical about allowing such tools for the leaderboard, so my question is: How do other PC communities handle situations like this?
There are two more things to consider:
- This game never had any re-release, sadly, and the PC version is notoriously broken on modern systems. You're lucky if you can get it to work at all.
- N64 actually has an advantage with its framerate (most N64 games run at around 20-30 fps and I doubt this one is much different)
Thanks for any help!
Just one really small thing: Make sure to not handle 'web/flash' in the same way as romhacks. Not all flashgames are the same, there are fangames and official releases.
I don't care about nudity at all, I never understood the problem that society has with it. If a an actual speedgame has it, who cares; if the game is just a shitty meme, get rid of it. Just treat those games like all other games.
Also, regarding Huniepop: Wasn't it that the nude mod is more or less an official download, they just couldn't release it with the game?
Not showing the thousandth decimal would be great as an option, a lot of leaderboards I use would look better that way :)
I like the normal frontpage because you can find new games and communities, I only follow one game where I'm the super-mod. Not seeing games that you know, but don't care about, would improve it in my opinion.
It would be cool if you could blacklist games in your settings, so they no longer appear on the frontpage. Would this be complicated to implement?
I see. Thanks for explaining this. I hope that this will one day be implemented :)
One of the problems with ILs is when not all levels work the same. For example, in Gex: Enter the Gecko, most levels have the following goals
- 1 to 3 red remotes, with each remote being a category
- 1 hidden silver remote
- 1 silver remote as a reward for obtaining enough of the collectibles
This is how it looks (yeah, I wish there was more activity): http://www.speedrun.com/Gex_Enter_the_Gecko/individual_levels
Now the bonus and boss stages work different. You only have a single gold remote to collect there, that's the only possible category. So with the current system, you would have to tell people in the rules to only submit runs to "Red remote 1" and ignore the rest.
And now for my new idea:
With the ability to create multiple tables, you could eliminate a lot of empty categories and give people more options to organize a game. In the case of Gex, it still wouldn't eliminate the problem completely, since I would have to break the natural order of the normal stages because of the different amounts of red remotes. But it would still be a big improvement!
What do you guys think?
Requesting super mod for Beetle Adventure Racing. I'm the runner who made BAR! speedruns a thing and played it at ESA, so you should know me. But here on this site, Freerunnerguys beat me with making a gamepage and now he isn't very active and doesn't respond on Twitch.
This site is the most active place for speedrun records at the moment, so it would make sense to include the event ILs here.
Just ignore the ones that are score based (at least until the site adds score functionality) and it should be fine. I'm sure a lot of people would love this addition!
