Emulators definitely work just fine, as you can see on the leaderboard two runs tied for the 6th place position used emulators. actually looking at it quickly, it looks like 30% of the runners did use them (in the Any% category).

I would make sure that you show the window, or input, or your hands, or something extra just to show the mods that extra effort. Input display is usually enough, especially to ensure no simultaneous L+R is used. You don't want to get a really great time and have it come into question, especially since you are new to running the game.

I look forward to seeing your runs!

BTW: Ignore the state of the site which it is on. It's basically an old site that kind of ended up only getting 10% finished, and now I just use its framework for writing tools.

So I made a simple ROM Checker where you can upload a ROM, and it checks against known PRG hashes to determine the version/game/etc reading the iNES header data and a few other details.

Long story short - You upload a ROM, it tells you the region, revision, game name of it. It still needs some work, but if anyone wants to try it out, its right here:

https://10new01f.com/tools/romchecker/

It (should) work for something like 3000 different known ROMS/versions, so it could be useful for people looking for a certain ROM, for a certain game.

Let me know if it works/doesn't

Thanks a lot man. I knew it seemed off when I was restarting (constantly cause I'm new at running cv1).

Excellent info to have. I have adjusted my timer offset. Thanks for both the reply and for adjusting my time!

Awesome man. Very cool of you to do this for the sake of documenting it.

Since I had ordered a five screw myself the other day; if there is any deviance from your cart ill post my findings.

Not related to the timing of the mentioned videos, but I am curious exactly how much time from when you push start till the timing begins.

I saw on Janthe's WR he uses -9.53. I just wanted to check, as I am just starting to run/grind this game, I would like to get it right early on. For some reason, I was using -8.60.

Ironically, since I started working on this, I haven't had the time to get a run in myself. That will change this week for sure =)

I really didn't think this game was getting enough attention. Hopefully, this will help.

Wow, this is really awesome! Great research, it is especially interesting to see that killing an enemy with Ligars ID will trigger credits.

Thanks very much for sharing this!

I know this, and I knew that I probably would, as I had so much damn fun putting this together, and watching old NES ads for inspiration.

I was thinking of making one for super pitfall, with a tagline like "Glitches are better than gameplay" and just kind of go from there.

Thanks a lot, man! And as always, good luck with runs!

So I wasn't able to do any runs of the game for a couple of weeks, but I was able to make this video to promote speedrunning Rygar:

It's made to look/feel like an old NES commercial. It's pretty stupid, but I thought I would share it.

Jappy New Year everyone, look forward to seeing more runners in 2018!

I started running about a month ago, then decided to record some runs yesterday as I finally have a computer again and can record splits. No joke, an hour after I was done for the day recording, I discovered the new route haha. I did see the new tutorial, it is an awesome help. Thank you for that WhiteHat94!

I did record a run this morning with the new route, which cut over 1m40s off my old time. I'm looking forward to getting my time down a lot in the new year and after the holidays.

It does seem to be slowly gaining popularity. I love the game, so I am definitely going to continue running it for a while. Hopefully, we can keep it active, its just more fun that way.

Oh, that's great! I wish I could have been a fly on that wall when you two were coming up with that route.

Thank you for the story and explanation of the new route. The farming spot alone is definitely a lot faster, knowing that the round trip is faster is just icing on the cake. Also, that is good to know about bumping the molgolin to maintain aggro, I may have missed that in trying it otherwise.

Maine, USAWolfMerrik7 years ago

First of all, congrats to WhiteHat94 on the new WR!

The new route looks great, although when trying this on my cart I was unable to bounce off the molgolin (them red-wing guys), I was, however, able to get it to work on my flash cart. I am assuming there are different PRGS, and I would like to dig deeper, provided someone already has not. The two Rygar carts I have (one is for a friend's Xmas present but I still tested it) are the three screw and black quality seal logo. I have seen cart versions that have 5 screws, as well as versions with a gold seal of approval (I believe these are PAL). I am just curious as to which version is what, if anyone knows, or has bothered to look into it.

The SHA-1 Hash for the ROM I have is B76593A8FBD39447CC5A5D85E525427B9ECEB6F8, which looking at https://nesdir.github.io/B3783F2A_USA.html shows this as the release of Rygar NES-RY-0

My cartridge is NES-RY-1, so it would seem that the older version is the ideal version for this route.

Again, I am sorry if this is known by other runners, I just could not find any information about the two US versions, so I wanted to share my findings. =)

Also, I am curious who discovered the new route. I particularly like the new farming spot, albeit the jump-in I am not used to making yet.

HA! Excellent. Also, I love how it says, Last Updated 30 years ago =P

One thing I will admit, I did have a hard time figuring out what ROM was the PRG-1 version when I first starting running this. Many are mislabeled, or just bad rips. So I downloaded lots of different versions of the ROM, many with junk in the header, but otherwise clean and found the hash. This is an easy ROM to check though because CV1 is PRG only (no CHR).

This was the checksums for the (what I have known) correct PRG-1 versions.

PRG-1 Eng SHA-1, 3dcb69a8c861c041aeb56c04e39adf6d332eda3a PRG-1 Portuguese SHA-1, 62dd3117790c1ee25eb4d5d035f98914161d02f5

Something like that might be good to include as a resource since we really can't (or at least shouldn't) share ROMs. I do own the game now, but when I first was playing it, was uncertain what version I had. This will be helpful for anyone using an emulator, and of course, people using a powerpak/everdrive.

I think a guide like that would be awesome. I have been leisurely running CV1 for a few weeks and would love some updated guides. Especially ones geared toward beginners.
