Yeah, a lot of communities view it as a form of emulation, and for the most part they run slower than actual consoles too (I think the Super NT runs slower than the SNES’s FPS) so whole they are generally accepted, you’re often times better off using an emulator on your computer.

However, as always, the view of whether it’s emulation or not is always up to the community.

Also, please don’t post the same thread in multiple forums - one is sufficient. It doesn’t belong in Introductions either, this forum is the correct place for it.

Holy crap, awesome work!

This is more fitting for the forums of the actual game (or any other place the community gathers), as more than likely none of us here on the general forums aren’t going to understand anything that you’re talking about if we’ve never been involved with the game.

@Elims there’s very little context with your post about why you can’t follow a game (is the button not there, does the button not work, etc) but check this: https://www.speedrun.com/post/91113

Someone probably retimed the run and discovered that the timer stopped too early from what it was supposed to. A mod or the runner probably made the adjustment after it was retimed. If you’re really that curious, go and ask the community for the game what caused the retime.

Okay, so then message them on any of their social media links and make them aware of your pending run. In your example of Opus, he was active on Twitter just a couple weeks ago, and most people get notifications when tweeted at even if they don’t use the site that much.

Every game has its own mod(s). You can see the mods of a game by looking for their usernames at the bottom of the left hand menu on every leaderboard for every game.

If your run is still pending, try contacting the mods through their social media links or a post in the game’s forums to make them aware that your run has been pending for a few weeks.

The above advice is good so I’m not gonna re-hash any of that. But I do want to provide you a warning that you should double check with the mods of the game you want to run to see how they feel about emulator.

PCSX2 is not a good emulator, it’s very inaccurate compared to a real console (it often has varying load times day by day depending on how your machine is running that day). As a result of that, it’s commonly banned from LB submissions, or sometimes it’s divided into its own category. Double checking with the mods or the LB rules might be good.

If you’ve already done that then this advice is moot, but I wanted to provide it just in case.

I believe that has been brought up before and the general consensus was that if a game finds itself getting 0s then it should probably use a different method of timing (if possible).

In the example of that run, the run did not take 0 seconds. It took (roughly estimating) 3-5 seconds. In a case like that, IGT probably shouldn’t be used as the timing method since it allows for inaccurate times due to how the game displays that time at the end.

Granted, the general opinion could have changed since the last time this was brought up, but I do remember this discussion from before.

If this is that weird meme where people “speedrun” the opening video sequence of the TV show, please don’t waste anyone’s time by requesting it.

You can use a timer to time your run, but it's not required to show (unless stated otherwise) is what I meant. A timer is a nice tool to have since it can keep pretty good track of your time and it's nice for viewers to know your pace, but it has no bearing on the run itself or it's validity (it might boost it though).

AntarcticaTimmiluvs5 years ago

Why do you say it won’t count unless you had a timer? Unless the rules explicitly ask for a timer, there’s no requirement for one.

The most commonly used one is LiveSplit, but there are a few alternatives like WSplit too.

There is no universal rule to what is allowed or not, you need to check the rules or with the mods of the games you want to run to see what they allow.

As an aside, an NES Classic will be slower than actual hardware. Not by much - it loses a second for every 10 minutes of play - but for games that are very optimal they can be a huge impact. Just keep that in mind if your goal is a top time.

Yeah, just watch the runs lol.

But, in general, RPG runs aim to do the most minimal amount to progress the story while also doing the most minimal amount of level grinding. Usually you can avoid needing high levels by exploiting certain mechanics to maximize your damage (like using Rikku’s Mix in FFX). Some RPGs needed a lot of grinding (like DQ1 before a lot of the glitches were found) but it’s still about doing as little as possible and by exploiting as much as possible to make your life easier.

Understanding game mechanics like damage caps can also help with this. As an example, in Kingdom Hearts 1, your strength stat past a certain point will result in your damage on the final bosses being scaled down to prevent you from obliterating them. So, we manage our equipment precisely so that way we can reach that important strength point while only having a level in the 40s (all Exp is from required bosses). It takes clever working of mechanics like that, but you’d be surprised how much you can get away with without grinding for hours and hours.
