Resources on TASing can be found at tasvideos.org

This site is for Speedrunning by humans, not TAS.
you also need a timer (use LiveSplit) and it's better to livestream it since if it's streamed there's a lesser chance it's spliced unless it's a replay (you can also just upload the video)
None of this is correct advice. You are not required to have LiveSplit or any timer on your video unless rules explicitly say so (this is very rare). Additionally, live-streaming doesn’t make a run less likely to be cheated, although cheated runs are few and far between anyway so it’s irrelevant whether the video is live or not.

For any non-NES retro (non HDMI) console I use component output with HD Retrovision component cables into a powered splitter. One component split goes to a Sony Trinitron CRT and the other goes to an OSSC. The OSSC then connects to my capture card, a Magewell HDMI capture card that goes to my PC via USB 3.0. For NES, since mine isn’t RGB modded currently, I use the same setup except the NES goes to a composite splitter (the one linked above) and connects to a RetroTink instead of the OSSC.

For HDMI consoles my capture card has an HDMI pass through that goes to my TV so I can just use that to split the signal between the card and the TV. I always play off the TV, never the PC. All in all, I went overkill because getting the best video quality from older consoles is a passion of mine, so my setup between all the devices and my capture card totaled up to like $700 or so.

The splits are pretty much irrelevant, all that matters is the duration of the run as a whole. If you start your splits when the game starts on the TV, and end your splits when the game ends on your TV, then your time and splits will be accurate. The viewers might just see you start/stop your splits "1 second early" on their video from the capture (this doesn't invalidate anything or cause issues, it's just a view thing), but the splits will still be correct.

I think LiveSplit has a delay option where you enter a number of seconds and LiveSplit will hold the split for that long. I don't use LiveSplit so I can't remember where that setting is (or maybe I just made it up), but I'm pretty sure it exists and people used to use it when they had longer delay. If memory serves, it would essentially mean you can hit the split key, LiveSplit will wait x amount of seconds (however long you put in) and then it'll actually register the split. This would allow you to sync the splits to the capture assuming the capture delay is consistent.

I don't personally use Elgato products, so I can't speak for them from experience, but my guess is that the adapter they provided will work well, but might be the cause of the 1s of delay in the capture. I'm assuming you don't want to invest in a more expensive upscaler, so what I can recommend is buying a powered splitter then 2 extra sets of composite cables. Then, you can run the composite from the NES into the splitter, then send one output of composite to the adapter/capture card, and then send another composite output to your TV (I'm assuming you have a CRT if you use RF). That will allow you to play off the TV with no delay, while still capturing the gameplay.

If your CRT is RF only, I would then get a modulator to go from composite to RF (this shouldn't introduce any lag).

My recommended splitter: http://bombch.us/DPsn My recommended modulator: http://bombch.us/DPsm Composite Cables: http://bombch.us/DPso

My sources for the above is that my setup used to use the exact same components in an RF/Composite setup years ago, so I can vouch for the products. You could get a RetroTink for a little over $100 (not sure about shipping out of the US), or you can get the above for like $50 total (again, shipping not included). Of course you could look around for cheaper alternatives, but those are the products I've used in the past.

Welcome to USB capture cards.

USB 3.0 cards tend to mitigate delay pretty good, but it's still not perfect when it's coming over USB. I'm afraid there isn't much you can do in terms of settings of configurations. As a side note, isn't that capture card HDMI input only? Are you perhaps running the NES through an upscaler of some kind to turn the composite into HDMI? If so, that could be the root of your problem. Unless you're using a good quality upscaler (Framemeister, OSSC, RetroTink) then you're probably going to introduce delay into your feed and it could be coming from that.

Is there a question in here somewhere? Are you looking for help with fixing the controller? It's obviously defective/broken if it's randomly inputting things different from what you're doing; it's certainly not expected behavior. It could be caused by any number of things - the inside could be dirty, the inside could have a piece loose, or there could be some other issue with it. It's hard to say without physically opening the controller and trying to examine it.

This is a bot. Don’t respond to the threads as it makes it harder for staff to clean up. Just ignore it and report it the proper forum under The Site if it hasn’t been reported yet (this one has been).

This has been brought up before and the general consensus is "no".

This would be a moderation nightmare to try and manage for the site, and other sites, like YouTube already have this feature and just do it so much better. This site isn't really meant to be a social place to chat, it's mostly designed to be informational and adding comments to runs would just create a lot of clutter for no benefit. The forums are the most social aspect of the site and even then those are used for questions primarily (and for bigger communities almost every post in the forums is met with "Join the discord to ask your question and get a faster response". So, the general user base of the site seems very inclined to keep social discussion to other places.

Strat discussion should happen in a more readable place like the forums or a discord server. It's easier to view entire discussions in those places so it becomes easier for communities to document routes, changes, ideas etc.; a comment section just isn't conducive to productive discussion on anything (and I would even argue that the forums aren't great for discussion and are better for basic questions). As for celebrating a run, that is also better off site on a place like Twitter or some other social media where that type of social interaction is more expected.

 1. RNG manipulation is allowed if you’re manipulating the RNG through actions within the game itself. What’s not allowed is using external tools or modifications to change the RNG. As for how the Minecraft community is seeking to detect things like that, you need to ask them.

 2. The site doesn’t ban people for cheating, each community handles it separately on their own. Ask the Minecraft community why they haven’t banned someone from submissions if you want to know more.

 3. This is not as large a problem as you might think. There are very few cases of people that I know of who actively modified the source code of their game to change RNG chances. This hobby runs a bit on the honor system that people aren’t using modified versions of games, but if you have concerns about specific games and runners’ ability to cheat, you can discuss that with the community for those games.

 4. Categories are decided upon by the game’s community, all suggestions can be directed towards the mods of a game and their category request process should be followed.

Listen, I get being upset that someone cheated, but you’re getting a little extreme here in my opinion. Nothing that happened here is common in speedrunning, it just got a lot of attention because it was a popular user who did it. Cheating is not running rampant in the speedrunning community and most games have a good system in place to detect it and stop it. It’s not as large or as bad a problem as you think.

Communities police this stuff individually, so if you continue to have concerns about cheating in Minecraft, you can try to talk to that community about it. The site won’t have any opinion on it, they just host the LBs.

Every game has its own rules for acceptable submission. Check the rules for the category in question and consult with the community for the game if you have further questions about submitting your runs.

I recommend you contact site staff and explain the situation because a moderator of an LB not accepting future runs due to someone accidentally submitting to the wrong category is a gross abuse of power and should not be happening at all. Unless of course there’s other details being left out.

OBS is the defacto standard for broadcasting and recording. There are more tutorials on it than I can count so take a look at any that suite your fancy.

That is a known bug and I actually reported it months ago. It’s easier seen on forums for series - toggle the sub forums, go to a sub forum, the go back. It’ll reset your content view to the main forums but still show the sub forums as toggled on.

It appears the site has an issue where it replaces the content on the screen when it loads with the default content for that page and it ignores any variable or toggle clicks you might have made to change that content, despite remembering that you had those variables selected. I never had the bug acknowledged nor do I know where it sits on being fixed. But it’s definitely one of the more annoying bugs I see.

I don’t believe there is a timer that can do that unless your phone can do something like “picture in picture” but with apps instead of videos.

If the game requires a timer on screen (for whatever reason) then you will need to edit in the timer in post.

You need to review the rules of the game in question and contact the mods for the game if you have any further questions.

No, nobody else will verify the run. You either need to request to become the mod of the game or wait until someone else does. Site Staff, nor anyone else, will intervene and verify a run on a game they know nothing about.

This is so subjective that you’re not really going to get a good answer. Most of the games in this series are very different in terms of gameplay and strats so everyone will probably find a different one “easy”. The easiest one will probably be the one you’re most familiar with on a casual level.

Doesn't the replay buffer work best for small things? I don't really think that's efficient for recording runs unless you're doing very short runs and you set it to something that's going to cover the range of a run (unless you set it to something like 600 seconds for a 10 minute average run). I personally don't see that as very useful if you're doing anything over more than a few minutes in length. You're better off just periodically starting and stopping the recording after a while of attempts if you don't want one giant file. I personally tend to restart my recording every few attempts I do depending on the length of what I'm doing.
