I'm not a runner but I use the Mandel cfg file that comes with JoeQuake. It's pretty great

I'm doing my first race in the GYS tournament tomorrow and I didn't think about my load times... I get some pretty stupid load times on a few chambers, most notably 19 and e02. ESPECIALLY e02. I'll easily lose ~30 seconds loading e02 in RTA.

Is there a way to reduce load times besides buying an SSD? Any special console commands that I don't know about?

One more quick question.. Will we be using in game time like we do with our runs here? Or is the ".done" time final?

The reason I ask is because with how bad I am at this game I'll need to save as many frames as possible lol

Quick question, does anybody know how long we'll have to schedule a time with the person I'm matched against? The reason I ask is that I'm in highschool with divorced parents, which means I can only run/stream half of the week(because parents) and week days are extremely limited(because school)... For example, I'll be able to run on the first, but the next time I'd be able to run is 5 days after, assuming nothing unusual happens.

How much time am I able to schedule in the future?

I didn't know there was a portal.cmd in Source Unpack... I don't know what it does but I know it's not what you're supposed to click on, haha. You're supposed to use portal.bat to open it.

Now that I think of it, I may have had to make the bat file myself(I may be thinking of the GoldSrc one, though...). If there is no portal.bat I can copy/paste mine here.

Edit: I think I misunderstood your problem. You mean the developer console window? That has to be enabled in settings. In the keyboard tab there is an "advanced" button. That will open a window where you can check a dev console option. I don't remember what exactly it says.

Check that box and then you can press the tilde key (~) to open it.

You know what they say, practice makes perfect. If by strafing you mean like, using the strafe keys to turn, then I'd say just slow down a bit. Turning and controlling momentum is hard when you're going too fast.

I could probably give some more detail if I could see what you're talking about/what you're doing wrong. Or maybe spefic chambers.

What file actually does the ghosting/timer stuff so I can look at the mod's code? From looking at all the files I can get a good understanding of what everything does but nothing stands out as a file related to the mod

hilo: Portal
Indiana, USASilquetoast7 years ago

I forgot to say that I also copied the portal file (.../SourceUnpack/portal) into the ghost mod dir where it would be like in the source unpack file. My logic behind that was that maybe I could copy all that and then all I need would be in there, then I could make a .bat file to launch the game with the "-game portal" parameter like Source Unpack does. The problem that I ran into, though, is that there is no hl2.exe to launch with that parameter. A little bit of Googling taught me that gameinfo.txt is what tells it where to launch the game from and stuff(I think?) and that's why I was fucking with the gameinfo.txt earlier.

I've tried to do it myself but failed horribly.

I figured this would be easy since Source Unpack and the ghosting mod are both source mods. I tried changing the gameinfo.txt to be like Source Unpacks(hoping that then it would open it as portal and not hl2) but that didn't work. Then I tried copying PackScience's gameinfo.txt from Portal Elevators just to see what would happen, and then it started crashing.

I don't have any idea what I'm doing. Is there a place I can go to learn how to do this stuff? Or does somebody want to tell me how to do it? (I'd rather learn it but both a solution and resources to learn about it would be nice :D )

If the ghost mod on Portal is impossible, how can I get just the timer onto Portal?

I get very impatient waiting for the beginning every time I start a run. I just want to make sure its okay before I start doing it

Windows 10 doesn't come with it. Or at least, not my copy. Maybe it's because my computer is custom built.

After some searching, I found a download buried in Microsoft's website. Yay. Lets hope the program works better than the title makes it sound like it does.

I'm looking for a program that is free(I have $20 to my name right now and I'm not about to blow it on Adobe Premiere), and all I really need it to do is trim the video and add text. And maybe have that text fade in and out... :P I often find myself wanting to add small notes to my runs(since I prefer not to talk during my runs) but there isn't any free programs out there that I could find that will allow me to do something like that.

Two things:

  • I realized I said the wrong thing in my original post
  • I have screenshots now to be more clear about what the problem is

I'm not sure how these forums work so if this comment doesn't bump my thread to the top I'll just repost this in a new one.

I have screenshots to better explain my issue: http://imgur.com/a/KhLXY

The issue is that when LiveSplit is open my task bar covers the bottom of Portal. I'm using all default Source Unpack settings. I haven't changed anything. Clicking on Portal doesn't push the task bar behind Portal like it normally would. The only way to get the task bar back behind Portal is to close it.

I'll try reinstalling the maps, then Source Unpack if I need to. Thanks for the help :D

Title I have confirmed that it happens consistently and it's pissing me off. Please help. It's ruined 2 PB's already :(

By tab, do you mean window? If so, you can just go to options>video>display mode>run in window. Or you can use the Source Unpack version of Portal, then it is by default in windowed mode but you can't see the borders.

hilo: Portal
Indiana, USASilquetoast7 years ago

I don't, unfortunately.

And if it helps, LiveSplit will also hold the task bar on top of CS:GO(another source game). So we know the problem is not SourceUnpack, it's just source games in general...

It's very annoying please help ;-;

Yes.

I didn't know if my vote would count because I hadn't submitted a run before(but you've watched me run the game before, so I wasn't sure), so I submitted a run so I could vote. I vote yes, if my vote counts.

edited because I didn't see the "how to vote"

Indiana, USASilquetoast7 years ago

I was told by Pack himself that my run would be invalid if I did use a save. Dacciox is my witness, haha.

This pack's biggest appeal is that it is very fast. I fell like adding a "vault save" type thing like normal Portal has will make it even faster. It will make it so much easier to restart runs.

The time that it takes for Chell to get out of the bed thingy is almost ten seconds. That is ten seconds we could use to already be done with chamber 00. I think we should have a save that loads the game just a few seconds before the crosshairs appear.

We don't time the time that it takes for Chell to get out of the bed, so I don't think there is a reason not to have one.
