Hi there all! I would like to ask everyone in this community to help out and write down any and all suggestions that you can come up with to attract new players to run this game.
I feel as though we should try to do something to increase the current number of active players that run this game, and I cannot think of any way to help attract new players to this game at this point in time.
If you can come up with any suggestions, please list them below! Thank you very much in advance!
@HowDenKing That actually makes quite a bit of sense. That is probably what happened as three of the runs said 4 days ago, and one said 17 days ago, and they didn't appear until yesterday, so I am more inclined to believe that they were submitted with the date played at an earlier date. I don't know why the hell I did not think of that :/ Thanks for the help!
Having some issues with runs awaiting verification.
Four runs that were awaiting verification did not show up in my queue until between 4 to SEVENTEEN days after they were originally submitted. Not sure how this is happening, but this is pretty bad if this is happening.
Thanks in advance!
@Liv Thanks for the message! Though he also hasn't been active in quite a while as well, I will try to get a hold of him. Thanks again for the help!
@Liv Thanks. I didn't really try to contact BlueInfinity because I think I tried in the past and got no response after a month or two, so I just put him on my list of people to not attempt to contact again. Thanks for the help! If nothing happens within a decent period of time, I will bring it up here again.
If nothing happens within a couple of weeks, I will ask again if Koopary could be raised to S-Mod or ask him if he could ask at that point in time.
@lunamilegaming Ask Deln or MLSTRM in that game's thread. This is meant for requests on games that have inactive moderators and you have runs pending for three or more weeks.
Sorry for co-opting the stance of moderator there. Was not my intention.
Ok, finally getting around to typing this long form feedback:
First, I want to get the cons out of the way:
-
Location of the marathon wasn't that ideal for me. Having to drive for 11 hours to get there really hampered my ability to watch runs and be able to perform my own runs at the event. If possible, please host this event somewhere in the Indiana/Ohio area next year, as this would help to get more people be able to come to the event.
-
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the commentator for my run was held up in traffic for almost three hours, and the staff insisted that I do my run two hours before I was ready to do it, and without the person that I really needed to have on commentary for my run. Dark-Aries did an OK job, but I ended up having to take focus away from my run to be able to explain stuff that he either forgot or did not know. Furthermore, I really, really disliked all of the schedule shuffling that went on throughout the event that had little or no notification in the Discord or any notice what-so-ever. This is something that should ALWAYS be noted on a Discord channel or that the runner should always be informed of any major changes to their schedules.

There was a real lack of submissions and diversity at NASA2019, as well as runner awareness for this marathon. This should be a relatively easy fix in that people can easily be notified if they are at least somewhat likely to both submit a run to the event and also be able to go to the event. People coming just for their run(s) and then leaving the same day also did not help this cause. Next time, more vigorous promotion of the event and more runner awareness type stuff could really help to potentially increase the amount of runners at next years' event.
-
As a mid-morning/late-evening runner, and as a commentator for four runs in the early-late night time period, I honestly was quite disappointed with how few people actually stayed to watch the runs instead of going and doing other things. I did the best I could to give the runs at these time periods my attention, but it still was not enough. Nothing makes for a sad showing if the run itself was amazing, the commentary was amazing, but there was nobody in the actual room to enjoy the run(s). Maybe there is some way to incentivize people for staying and watching runs during these time periods?\
-
There were way too many runs done by staff members during the set-up blocks. While there were no runs technically supposed to be happening during these time periods, I think it would have been more beneficial to have other people at the event who had runs/ideas to fill the time to let them fill the time instead of having other staff members fill the time. Give the regular guys a chance, people! :P
-
I found that there was not enough casual/practice stations at the venue for everything that was needed, especially with the fact that there were only two PCs. Maybe include more than 2 PCs next time?
-
I found overall that there was a lack of hype for the runs being performed.
-
I found it utterly disgusting that people left shit all over the stream room and did not bother to pick up after themselves. Shame on them! Thanks to the staff for cleaning up after other people!
Now that all of the nasty stuff is out of the way, we can get down to the pros:
-
Everything on the technical side of things was extremely smooth. It was a blessing to be able to perform my runs using the PC, Keyboard, Mouse, and Headsets provided. Everything was run smoothly, and there were very few hiccups.
-
The atmosphere of the stream room was amazing, and everyone that came to the event were super friendly and made my first time coming out to this event something I will never forget! So many new people were met, so many new things were seen, if only it could last forever!
-
Almost all of the staff members were approachable, friendly, and helpful. They helped ensure that the place stayed clean, the stream and audio balancing was top-notch, and they literally left their hearts and souls out on the playing field. Thank you!
-
Hotel room was expansive, but a little underwhelming for the price.
Sorry that there weren't more pros than cons, but that's all that I could think of for the moment.
Thanks again for hosting such a wonderful event, and I hope to come back next year, provided it is somewhere I can drive to easily, as I cannot afford to fly.
Hi there. I've already left a message on the forums for Dr. Mario Online RX (albeit very shortly before posting here). Koopary is the only moderator that is actively moderating the game, but there have been spats where the runs have been waiting in the queue for 2-4 weeks before they get verified or rejected. I would like to request either Acmlm or myself be a moderator for this game. I have contacted Koopary via Twitch and have not heard back from him in over two weeks, and he has no other way of being contacted.
Thanks in advance!
Basically, I don't want people to just cycle through levels until they find a really, really short one and then do just that short one for the category, which is one of my main qualms for adding this category.
I would actually be fine with a 1 Level No Reset category, but with this added rule: You MUST play the first level that is picked. You are not allowed to reset the run and start the level over again. I think that would add enough enjoyment and randomness to the run to actually make it work. Of course, this still means that eventually the times are going to need to be timed by milliseconds.
If that is fine with you guys, I'll add the category tomorrow.
One thing that I forgot to mention about the 5/26/19 ruling change: All runs done before the ruling change are grandfathered into these ruling changes. No runs will be removed from the boards that did not follow these new ruling changes.
The only runs that will be removed due to these changes are those that do not include video proof. Any runs on these boards that do not include video proof will be removed, but seeing as all of the runs that I have seen on this board include video proof, I do not think there will be any removals at this point in time.
I'll do some short and sweet bullet points for right now and come back in a few days with a wall of text for my feedback (not joking, either).
Current pros:
- Atmosphere at the event was fantastic.
- Event was well handled by the current staff.
- Tech was immensely easy to deal with.
- Staff during runs were extremely easy to get along with, and helped make the experience even better.
- The majority of the people there were extremely friendly.
Current cons:
- Commune to get there was a pretty big hassle for me.
- There were some runs that I wish had bigger crowds at the venue than they had.
- Schedule got shifted due to unforeseen circumstances, and I have trouble adapting to change. I understand that due to the traffic some of the runners got involved in that you had to make a tough choice about making certain runs go before others. More on this in private.
I will undoubtedly think of more as I mull over this.
It could definitely bring more people to running this game, I agree. The problem I see with this is that people would just keep resetting until they find the most optimal level and remember the seed for that and only play that seed. I think 1 level is too short of a category, but I would be fine with 2 level if a No Reset policy was implemented, so that it would still challenge the players, but not be so short as to be able to be gamed by players.
Also, I'm not the only person that gets to decide in such matters. I value the opinions of everyone in the community, and it is ultimately up to the entire moderation staff to make decisions on such matters.
Good luck in your future endeavors. You will be missed by this site!
I'm looking to run the All Bosses category of this game at some point, but I see no documentation or anything else to help me learn the category. Do any notes for the category exist?
Thanks for the help in advance!
One final ruling change, and I don't know why this wasn't already enabled, but emulators are now banned. This is a PC game, so there should be no need for emulation.
I've gone ahead and added 50-Infinite Levels and 50-Levels No Reset categories. No reason not to include them.
As of 5/26/19, the following rule changes are in place globally:
- All runs that included milliseconds were retimed to remove these milliseconds. The time remains the same, just without the added milliseconds included in the time. This leads into the next point, which is that all runs no longer require milliseconds to be added to the time. The reason for this change is that I find that it is not really required at this point in time as we neither have the player-base, nor the competitiveness, nor the highly optimized times that I feel are required to need to enforce this ruling.
- All runs must be done with the original game audio. The reason for this change in ruling is to make it easier to detect people that are splicing runs together.
- All runs must have a LiveSplit Timer running. The reason for this change is to make it harder to splice runs together.
- Category Naming: All categories have had the hyphens in their names removed to allow for much easier naming conventions.
- 15 Level No Reset and 20 Level No Reset: These two categories have had their rules changed once more. You are now no longer able to make more than one mistake on any level or you will have to start a new run. This is done after much research on my part and some of the runs that have come in that have proven to me that allowing for one lapse for these two shorter categories is not necessary.
Now, I would like to come back to this and say that the original purpose for making these categories does not seem to interest enough of the current or past runners to make it worthwhile to keep them. Not sure if anyone else agrees, but I just don't see the interest there.
You will always have the honor of being the marathon that I did my first ever speedrun during, so I just wanted to lead with that, as it will always be a milestone.
In terms of the event itself, everyone that I was directly involved with during the event was extremely welcoming to a new runner such as myself, and overall, it created an atmosphere of positiveness that helped carry me throughout my entire run.
Everything about the event from a behind the scenes perspective was handled professionally and everyone involved seemed to be on top of everything, including trying to get additional runs so that we could get this marathon off the group to begin with.
Huge thanks and props to MASH and everyone else involved with the event for making it such a fun and uplifting experience for all the runners, and especially all the new runners, such as myself.
The only negative I have to say about the event is that I think it might be too niche of a type of speedrun in order to get three full days worth of runs, and I wouldn't want to see this event not be able to happen in the future because of a lack of submissions, so I think maybe expanding it out a little to possibly include another subset of RPGs, such as tactical or strategy RPGs would help make it a bigger, better event for next time.
The other negative I have is that maybe another reason that we almost did not have enough submissions to cover the entire event is because the timing of it wasn't at a good time where you could get enough submissions. Possibly moving the dates next time might help increase the overall amount of submissions next year.
Overall, was a wonderful marathon to be a part of, and I hope to be a part of it again next year!
