You are actually 1st at the time of writing. You had submitted 4 hours instead of 4 mins :)

Run accepted - nice work. Just to advise, you can get an application called Riva Tuner and use it to lock your game to 60fps. Works on any game - just add the exe to it and make sure it's running in the system tray when you boot a game. Almost essential to have in Outrun 2006

Never realized we could comment on runs :)

Yeah, best avoid ransomware :)

But seriously, it's not strictly abandonware but with the licence expired and no legitimate way to buy it new anywhere, it's fair game as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, there is no technical difference however the PS2 dualshock has a HUGE deadzone which makes it less precise than the lovely Xbox port. The stock PC release was not very good at all (a very disappointing port) but the FXT mod fixed a lot of little things such as the lack of FFB-like Vibration and, coupled with the higher resolution, is the game we really should have got in 2006.

The Japanese PS2 version (called Outrun 2SP) is arguably the best version to play as it features native Driving Force Pro FFB support. But it's hard to find outside of emulation or burning a disc.

So I played both HSV and Beetle and there may be a big difference. Using the fastest top speed car available at the start in each version, the Holden clocks in at 245kmh max (easily tested on any ramp) whereas the equivalent beetle only got to 178.

While it is no barometer as my runs were wildly different (and I am not exactly an elite player), I did a quick time trial in these two cars on Coventry cove.

Beetle was 6:15"7xx Holden was 6:16"1xx

To be fair, Beetle didn't "feel" much slower when playing but that being said, I played much more poorly in my HSV run (took a swim and smashed into a wall in that run). I do think it might warrant a further look from someone more intimately familiar with the game than I. I might give the NTSC version a go tomorrow just to double check - I know some games on N64 (notably Mario Kart 64) had to split times between PAL and NTSC and some games did not.

Dublin, IrelandNoobsaibot213 years ago

"It could very well be the case that PAL isn't even slower in terms of ingame time, as seen in many other racing games."

So do we know if there is a difference between the PAL and NTSC games relating to time? Is PAL simply slower but in game clock is also slower to match? If so, does that not offer a slight advantage over NTSC players? I only have the PAL game. I can have the NTSC game on the everdrive but my monitor doesn't display it correctly with very odd colours. Have never been able to figure out why. Stock PAL console with no region mods or anything and PAL S-Video cable

There is a difference in the advanced stage. The turn at the alien spacecraft has been trimmed in Power edition as it's basically a much harder 90 degree left turn in BOTE. Not sure if that would majorly impact times as such but worth noting anyway.

Oh, and if any one here plays Outrun 2SP, come join us at the new Outrun 2SP board. I could use the numbers as I had to petition pretty hard to get the game there (Outrun 2006 is set up arseways). Allowing Teknoparrot submissions too:

No matter. A brand new game has been added to SR.C for Outrun 2SP

https://www.speedrun.com/outrun2sp

This variant opens up players of Outrun 2SP (the arcade game featured within Outrun 2006) as well as players of Outrun Online Arcade (PS3, 360), Outrun 2SP arcade players and Teknoparrot players.

This game in no way invalidates 2006 C2C (after all, 2006 is as distinct from 2SP as 2SP is from 2006). There are a lot of leaderboards set up and attempting to have these alongside similarly set up 2006 boards would be a NIGHTMARE to set up. Though I do hope the 2006 leaderboards are brought into line with the 2SP and OR2 leaderboards some day. It would be nice to see fastest times for Goals A, B, C and E in OR cars. And pure time attacking too.

All:

Not sure how to add a direct link to the discord for the game but here it is

This is originally just the Outrun 2 discord for SR.C but the mods have been sporting enough to merge chat for the two games in here

Welcome to Outrun 2 Special Tours aka Outrun 2 SP. Please note that Outrun 2 SP is a separate and distinct game from Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast as there are differences in the cars available to use which does have a competitive impact as well as some differences in handling and physics generally. Please see the rules below in relation to which games are eligible for submission. Many thanks.

RULES:

  • In game time is to be submitted only

===================================================

  • All submissions will require video evidence however, a photo of your time may suffice if you are an established player and it is widely accepted by the community as a legitimate/possible time to achieve

===================================================

  • The following variants of Outrun 2 SP ARE permitted for submissions to these leaderboards:
  • Outrun Online Arcade (2SP courses only)
  • Outrun 2 SP (The full arcade game featured in Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast on PS2, Xbox, PC & PSP)
  • Outrun 2 SP (The full arcade game featured in Outrun 2 SP for PS2 in Japan only)
  • Outrun 2 SP (Arcade - Lindbergh board. Available on the Teknoparrot emulator too)
  • Outrun 2 SP (Arcade - Chihiro board)
  • Teknoparrot submissions will be permitted. You MUST select emulator when submitting times.

===================================================

  • Submissions achieved via the Outrun and Time attack modes OUTSIDE of Outrun 2SP in Outrun 2006 are NOT ALLOWED. Coast 2 Coast is it's own, sufficiently distinct game featuring different car stats as well as special OR cars and these lead to dramatic gameplay differences: https://www.speedrun.com/outrun_2006_coast_2_coast

The choice of car to use is all very complicated as it depends on if you are playing Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast (hereafter referred to as just Outrun 2006) or Outrun 2SP,

  • Outrun 2006 is based on 2SP but should be treated as a different game.
  • Outrun 2SP is the full arcade game within the game Outrun 2006.

So I will offer a full breakdown of each "Game" as Outrun 2006 is not equal to Outrun 2SP. This is why I feel the leaderboards need an overhaul:

================================================

Outrun 2SP: So for 2SP, you have just one "grade" of car (in Outrun or Heart Attack mode) and the top speed (without slipstreaming) is 293 Km/h. Handling is pretty much the same for all cars and really, your choice of car is aesthetic mostly.

There are two "grades" of car in Time attack mode - Normal and Tuned. Normal cars behave the same as in Heart Attack and Outrun mode (same handling & top speed). The Tuned cars offer a top speed of 300 Km/h for ALL cars and handle the same as the F40 does in Outrun 2. They also do not drop speed as you move your car left and right (Move, not turn/drift)

As mentioned, in Outrun 2SP, car choice is mostly aesthetic. Some cars may 'feel' like they behave differently (obviously with 6T vs 5T) but in general, are virtually the same and this ensured an even playing field for the arcade leaderboards at the time (Not to mention the XBL leaderboards which are long gone of course).

Please also note that there is now a dedicated game on speedrun.com for Outrun 2SP which would be friendlier to runs from this mode in Outrun 2006: https://www.speedrun.com/outrun2sp

================================================

Outrun 2006: This is where things get complicated and don't go relying on the in game "stats" in the car select screen either as they are wrong.

There are two car "types" (Standard and OR) and four grades (Novice, Intermediate A, Intermediate B and Professional) for each. This applies to all game modes in C2C (Outrun, Heart Attack, Time Attack).

'Standard' cars behave similar to Outrun 2 (That's Outrun 2 - Not 2SP) in terms of handling and top speed. For Novice cars, top speed is 288Km/h, Intermediate A is 293Km/h, Intermediate B is 293Km/h and Professional is 300Km/h. I saw/felt no difference in handling between Intermediate A and B despite what the stats screen says. The only difference I detected was the A cars are 6T and the B cars are 5T. Professional cars do not lose speed as they turn. All car grades handle exactly like they do in Outrun 2.

'OR' cars are similar to the standard with some differences. For Novice cars, top speed is 300Km/h, Intermediate 5T is 304Km/h, Intermediate 6T is 307Km/h and Professional is 309Km/h. Unlike standard cars, the Intermediates do have a difference of speed and handling. '6T' cars handle better, are more 'stable' and have a faster top speed however, their acceleration is poor (the slowest of any class almost). In contrast, 5T have the fastest acceleration of anything in the game but are a bit less stable than other cars and can easily fish tail. Notably, the OR cars also DO drop speed as you move your car left and right (Move, not turn/drift). Even the professional ones.

================================================ Notes:

  • The Japanese PS2 exclusive Outrun 2SP is more or less the same for all the above and is essentially just Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast by a different name
  • It is possible Automatic cars may behave differently in the various modes. I didn't check but, if you want to be approaching the top of any leaderboard (new or existing), you will need to master MT anyway
  • Outrun Online Arcade is basically just Outrun 2SP with only 10 car models, none of the OR car variants and no 2006/Coast 2 Coast modes. While it has it's own SR.C listing, you would be better off submitting runs for this version of the game in the dedicated Outrun 2SP game: https://www.speedrun.com/outrun2sp

================================================

I hope the above proves useful to all - both for those wondering what car to select as well as for those that I hope will update the leaderboards into different, suitable categories (similar to my suggestions in the other topic) https://www.speedrun.com/OutRun_2006_Coast_2_Coast/thread/37vya

Hi All,

I'm a seasoned Outrun 2006 C2C/2SP player from pretty much day one in the arcade (and Sega nut all the way back to the mastersystem) :)

Is there any chance of these leaderboards being set up correctly? I'd love to set up a bunch of times in an organized way rather than simple 'any car, any Transmission, any route, any goals, any mode' runs. And i'd like to attract the old guard of Outrun 2/SP players from 15 years ago to get back to playing this masterpiece once again (RJ, F40, Spence, AM2M3, Shiggs, Isamuu etc...). All of our times from back then are restricted to the wayback machine for the arcade game site and lost to the ether for OG Xbox Live and i'd love to have a lasting documentation of our legacy other than blurry, decade-old Youtube videos at 360p. But they are unlikely to drop times on the leaderboards as they are set up at the moment.

I realize that this game originally had MANY leaderboards on Xbox live during it's life and this was a problem sumo digital were painfully aware of. If you count every combination of courses and routes, there were EIGHTY FOUR time leaderboards for the game (60 individual lap forward & reverse over 2 and SP tracks, 20 'GOALS' forward & reverse over 2 & SP courses and 4 of the 15 stage tracks forward & reverse over 2 & SP tracks). And that's not including the score leaderboards for Outrun and Heart Attack modes)

Obviously the above is FAR too many so to simplify, I'd suggest the following leaderboards:

TIME ATTACK: GOAL A, B, C, D, E - Regular Cars, AT or MT combined, Normal or Tuned combined, Forward (not reversed)

15 STAGE GOAL - Regular Cars, AT or MT combined, Normal or Tuned combined, Forward (not reversed)

GOAL A, B, C, D, E - OR Cars, AT or MT combined, Normal or Tuned combined, Forward (not reversed)

15 STAGE GOAL - OR Cars, AT or MT combined, Normal or Tuned combined, Forward (not reversed)

And only for the SP courses (maybe the OR2 courses in time but there is also the plain old Outrun 2 for that so no panic). So that's just 12 leaderboards.

I guess the same as above for 'Outrun mode' due to popular demand (Outrun mode is really a score attack rather than a time based challenge). I would be hopeful the Outrun and Time attack modes are kept separate either way as both modes demand a completely different approach of play.

I hope it's considered and am willing to help (I'd rather NOT be a mod or verifier but would do so temporarily to help set up)

I'll probably just stick to Time Attack leaderboards. Outrun and Heart Attack mode require different tactics to play for the best scores. Despite what the sticky (closed) topic says, it's not simply fastest time = highest scores in Outrun mode. This is even more evident in 2SP/2006 with the slipstream mechanic. Outrun is very much a high score mode and not a speed test (though doing what needs to be done fast helps).

Dunno if there is an OutRun 2SP/2006 board but if so, I hope the time attack leaderboards there have normal and OR cars separate as their behaviour is totally different

"high scores are not what the name "speedrun dot com" implies."

By that logic, why even have 100% speedruns when any % would technically be the fastest way to get from start to finish in a game? I think just have high scores on speedrun.com and keep it all centralized.

Howdy/Kiaora/G'day/umm... hello,

I was just wondering if you guys plan to implement a heart attack high score? Or Outrun mode score NOT based on time but rather score?

Additionally, do you plan on doing scoreboards for the Bonus Stage 1 (SCUD Race) and Bonus Stage 2 (Daytona USA 2: Power edition) tracks? If so, please note that it would be worth doing a separate leaderboard for the Japanese version of these trackss as there are subtle but very visible differences. I've detailed the main differences in the description of some YT videos I made years ago:

Bonus Stage 1

Bonus Stage 2:
