Thank you so much! i was stumped for so long!

So I'm attempting to Speedrun Disco Kid and in the first phase he's instantly knocked down with the 3 star punch but when I attempt that with the exact same method it only gives me a lot of damage not knocking him down, anyone have a simple way of explaining that to me?
