@PotatoJones, I believe I did what you were describing with the treasure. After the fog is lifted and I had access to the entire great sea I randomly looked for treasure in a rock formation and pulled up a chest. Later on I talked to a toad who said something like "Let me show you where the treasure is... it looks like you already got this one!".
