The sequel to Grow Home, Grow Up, was released last week. The open nature of the game makes it a pretty cool speedrun, and thus I gave it a shot with the following results:
Is there any interest to maybe open up leaderboards for the game to extend the "Grow" speedrun series?
Game Name: Dust: An Elysian Tail System: PC Category: 117% Warpless Gameplay Estimate: 2h00min Ending/Bonus Estimate: None Possible Donation Incentives: None Sample run video: Description: Animation cancelling: the speedrun. Dust is a great metroidvania platformer with a rather broken speedrun. Almost every ability is abused as we are able to fly infinitely and spam mobility skills for really skill heavy movement. 117% Warpless is a lovely showcase through the whole game without the confusing Warp glitch, and has not been performed in any other marathon before this. Availability: Friday 5-12pm, Saturday & Sunday 8am-11pm CET
My short feedback based on my 3-night visit (I used hotel so can't say anything about mass housing):
Location: Great! Skövde is a really lovely town and the venue was pleasantly close to everything. No need for long walks to reach places. Plus, as a Finn, Sweden is pretty much the second best location there is after Finland (but please by all means don't move ESA here ^^).
Venue: The venue was very good. I liked the idea of having both of the streams in the same room, you could see with one glance if there was anything of interest going on. As a runner I didn't mind about the close proximity of the other stream at all, but that's probably because of the headset I was wearing (which was super nice, really liked to hear my commentators and donation readers!) It indeed seemed like some rooms were underutilized, maybe next time you could design a theme for each room and sign them properly (like card games, fighting games etc)?
One problem the live audience experienced was that sometimes you couldn't hear the runners at all if you weren't sitting close to them. Same problem with donation reading.
Other people have brought this up already, but consider having a 24/7 info station. There you could sign in to the event when you arrive, sign up for open streams, ask about the schedule.. Ask about anything really! I feel it would be super helpful for the attendees, as now there was a lot of confusion surrounding the open stream, schedule and what not. And yeah, having a better system to keep the schedule up to date would be nice.
But overall it was a very positive experience for me. I hope to return to Kulturhus next year. :D
Okay, so I have a laptop with a VGA-port which can run my game just fine. However, does your setup cause any extra stress to my laptop, or are you just capturing the footage? I don't think it can handle anything extra besides the game itself.
I suppose the message above is also aimed towards me since I criticized the double stream system.
First of all let me say that I agree with pretty much everything you said in your message. The idea behind the double stream is good, if there's something that doesn't appeal to you on the first stream then you can try your luck with the second. That's great.
However, it must be said that these streams have not been equal. I can only comment ESA 14, but the first stream had way more viewers throughout the marathon than the second one. Why? It had speedruns. 24/7.
ESA profiles itself as a speedrun marathon, so people want to see speedruns. It's unreasonable to expect the streams to be equal when one of the streams dedicates it's whole presence to that idea, while the other one doesn't. Don't get me wrong, having variety in the material is great, I want to see some backstage material and people having fun in general in non-speedrun related context. But you will take a hit in viewership with that, which creates the inequality.
In that light, being placed on the secondary stream is slightly disappointing, from my personal point of view. I take my speedrunning pretty seriously, I have put lots of effort into perfecting my run and helping the community, so therefore I am 100% dedicated to give the best possible impression of the community I represent. Being placed on the second stream doesn't change that one single bit, it might even make me try harder. But I feel sad for my community, more so than for myself, for the loss of a better opportunity, especially when we are desperate to have more runners in the scene.
To the scheduling team: don't take my message offensively, I don't blame you. I understand the huge struggle you have to go through to make the schedule happen in the first place. You have to make sacrifices along the way, you can't give everyone prime time slots. I am thankful for accepting my speedrun in the first place, and I will respect your decision to place my run to the second stream.
I did mention the Crash 2 overlap already, and I would prefer if that got some kind of rearrangement. I am definitely not the only person who is unhappy with that situation.
I hate to sound ungrateful, and hopefully I managed to avoid that tone. I just wanted to give some insight for why I feel the way I do. I would love for the ESA-crew to prove me wrong, and I trust that they'll do everything to make the event as good as it can be.

It's obvious that you guys try to balance out the two streams to make them equal but the schedule makes a clear suggestion that the action is more focused towards "Stream A". What are the reasons behind putting a run in one or the other?
As someone whose run got thrown into "Stream 1" which seems to be the secondary stream I would at least like to know the reason why it's there especially when I consider it to be a top quality run (biased of course).
Also, there's an overlap with another run (Crash 2) where I absolutely want to be on the couch, and I'm also relying on that runner to provide back-up commentary for myself. So for me this schedule is quite problematic and more so disappointing.
I hope I can get some clarification on this and possibly some kind of rearrangement at least when it comes to overlapping if possible.
The estimate for Dust: An Elysian Tail can be lowered to 1:05 (from 1:10)
Also, please note that I am only available at the event from 29th of June to the 2nd of July. So I'd preferably have my run on Tuesday (30th) or Wednesday (1st), if that's not fine then later Monday (28th) evening.
