I know this is a stupid question but I've tried escape, enter, mouse, space, etc and nothing seems to skip the cutscenes. Escape brings up the menu and nothing else seems to do much of anything.
Hi,
Can we get the Switch version added please? This new version (called Home: Postmortem Edition) allows you to skip text pretty fast so I have a feeling it will be one of the faster versions (if not THE fastest).
There is also developer commentary in this new version so we might even be able to add a new category for hitting all the commentary spots (I think you actually have to click on the hot spots to get the commentary to trigger). Gone Home has a similar category for the developer commentary mode in that game.
All,
Silent Hill 4 is available to buy digitally for PC on GOG's website for $9.99 as of today, 10/02/2020. I just bought it and it appears to be the same as the physical PC release from some time ago.

I doubt we'll ever get 2 & 3 but I'm glad we at least got one of them. If anyone can't afford a physical version, this might be the way to go for you if you still want to own a copy.

PC version released today on Steam and Epic Game store (also released on iOS i believe). Can we get PC version added please?
I just updated the leaderboard to use milliseconds. The time has been whittled down so much already (under 4 minutes now) that I have a feeling eventually we're going to need the millisecond column. To keep me from having to re-adjust the entire board when the time comes, I've decided to go ahead and implement the change now.
All,
I hated to make this change and reject any runs (including my own) but after re-watching my own run and a new submission, it became apparent that there are parts of the game where you literally can not tell what is happening because the game is just too dark. As a result, I have rejected all former runs and will now be requiring the use of the flashlight. It is located right next to you when you start and barely adds any time on. I was able to do a run just now in 3 minutes and 54 seconds which is already better than my previous PB without the flashlight.
Ordinarily I'd be loathe to make a change like this on an established leaderboard but there were only 2 runners (myself and the new submission) plus the game can be completed in under 4 minutes so it's not a huge hassle to ask someone to please run it again.
I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused though. If I had realized this would happen, I would have done this from the beginning of the board.

How are we completing runs on Switch?
I've attempted about 20 different runs now on the Switch version and it ALWAYS crashes in the exact same spot. It's about 2 hours (or 2 and a half) into the run. Always within 60 seconds of the exact same spot. I've tried the digital version and the physical version.
So I guess my question is...how is everyone else able to complete a run without the game crashing? I've tried occasionally for months now and it crashes without fail during every run. It's super frustrating.
In anticipation of the upcoming Switch release (release date is to be determined right now) I've added Switch to the platform list. I've also added other regions for PC and Switch since apparently I neglected to do that the first time around lol.
Let me know if you have any questions. We'll have to wait until the game releases to see if there are any differences that would cause us to have to separate the leaderboard. For now, we'll leave it as is and we'll revisit it when the time comes.
The newest update for Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition allows you to use 4:3 or 16:9 for the cutscenes. The problem with that is, that was one of the "tells" for you mods from what I understand that clued you into whether or not someone was using the Enhanced Edition or not. With this newest update, it may become harder to tell if they're using it or not since the cutscenes might show up in their original format if they choose to use the EE that way. There are plenty of other tells of course but I just wanted you to know since that may make your jobs a tiny bit harder now.
Putting this out there as an FYI/heads-up in case anyone missed the EE update news.
Everyone,
The leaderboard has had a few changes made since we now have a load remover tool available. This means that we can now remove load screens using the tool and get a better idea of "in game time". Currently, the leaderboard is sorted by In Game Time with Real Time also being listed for each run.
Here's where your vote comes in: technically "in game time" versus "real time" isn't accurate. What's accurate is "Time without loads" versus "time with loads". I sorted the leaderboard that way last night but didn't like the way it looked so I switched it back to what you see now. But what you see now isn't "technically accurate".
So, I need to see votes in this thread.
Who wants "time without loads" versus "time with loads"
And who wants to see "Real time" versus "In game time"?
EDIT: I'll only vote to break a tie. Otherwise, I'm leaving it up to the community.
2 of the 3 runs I've done for the 100% category have resulted in a glitch where the homeless man does not appear. Walking to a building that has an interior and then coming back (to essentially try to make the outside area reload) doesn't seem to work. There was one report of this happening online years ago but in that case, the character model was missing but you could still interact with him. This is different. You are unable to see or interact with him.
I just wanted to make this post as a warning/information thread since a cause hasn't been determined. It's hard to find something that I did different between the 3 runs that would possibly have made this happen so perhaps it's just random? Either way, I'll leave this here as a warning for anyone running this category and also maybe we'll add to the thread if we're able to figure out a cause and effect for this issue (as well as any troubleshooting of course).
So, I've been speedrunning this game again and I noticed something that I forgot to ask about last time I was running this game. When the QTE's pop up, the buttons they ask you to hit don't match the buttons on my controller. If it wants me to hit square, I have to hit triangle. I haven't figured the others out yet.
Does anyone know why that is? It's only on the emulated version as far as I can remember. PS2 version isn't like that. I'm using a dualshock 4.
Pumpkin% has been opened for the new Halloween Haunt Event that just launched. It runs from October 25th through October 31st of 2019. Just start a new game normally and find 5 pumpkins throughout the game. Time starts and ends in the exact same spots. The ending is slightly different as are the pumpkin locations.
The category will remain up permanently even though the event ends in a few days. If they do another Halloween event next year, we'll start adding the year to the category name. Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, etc.
Is fast travel feasible during the speedrun? You can't use the radio to fast travel everywhere and you can only use it to fast travel to locations you've already visited so I guess my question is - would it even be worth it to do that sidequest during the speedrun? I've been practicing without it but am just wondering if doing that quest might knock a little time off the run.
I found what will (hopefully) be an easier out of bounds glitch with practice. I should also mention that Aaron mentioned that someone else may have discovered it so I'm not claiming I fully discovered this. I just may have found a way to do it consistently.
So, you turn off your flashlight and bring up the map and quicksave like normal. When you reach the top of the stairs, match your angle perfectly with the wall. you have to follow it PERFECTLY. If you slide even a millimeter to the right or left, it will not work. Once you're lined up, follow the stairs down. When you reach just ABOVE where you think you need to be, go ahead and turn into the darkness. Do NOT go any lower. If you continue to go lower, the environment spits you back onto the steps and it won't work.
Why does this help us? Because if you can do this consistently, we never have to worry about "falling down" again. If you glitch into the wall perfectly, James will walk as if he's walking down the stairs. You never fall, you walk down and into the darkness. I did it yesterday twice without even trying and then today I decided to practice and record my practicing. In 5 minutes, I'm pretty sure I figured out what you need to do to do it consistently. Just skip to the 5 minute mark if you don't want to watch me practice and screw up a bunch.
I didn't add it to the Guides page since I haven't consistently got it down yet but I think we can do it.
Hey - I'm practicing the speedrun for this now on my Xbox One. Can we get this added to the list of platforms so I can select it when I do my submission or do we need to select Xbox 360?
For the Level Leaderboard, Easy Difficulty, Genesis level - I thought you actually had to beat the level by finding all 8 pages? The video on the leaderboard only found 4 and then got caught by Slenderman. But when you go to the Normal difficulty leaderboard, the people in those videos/submissions found all 8 pages.
So which is it? Do we just need to die as fast as possible or do we need to find all 8 pages as fast as possible?
Hey guys - is there any way you would consider adding a separate board for emulator since this game is so rare (separate from the console versions of course, to keep things fair)? It's a very expensive game to get ahold of in the US. Just curious.
Are we allowed to use the polygon character models during speedruns? I figure we are since there doesn't appear to be any difference (it's just a costume) but just wanted to make sure.
Are we going to be adding PC to the leaderboard? It released on Steam today and I bought it. Just want to know if I'm going to be able to submit it when I run it.
