Heya all,
I'm putting this here as a sort of wiki, with the goal of expanding it as knowledge for the speed strats accumulate. This is sort of a general catch-all topic for info useful to speedrunning.
I'm not sure as to how the community can interact with the speedrun.com guides but don't hesitate if you have info to add.
1 - Predicting bosses based on floor enemies (still OK as of 0.1.9c)
You may have noticed it before, but enemies on a floor give you an indication of what boss you're going to fight later on. For example, finding little boars on floor 1 means you'll fight Minotaur, and spiderlings indicate a Spider boss.
This is especially useful to predict bosses that make you lose time (Octopus you dirty bastard), and potentially even reset in floor 6 when you have a middle to bad run and see octopi in your rooms.
2 - The glorious floor 3 armory (OUTDATED)
If you enter the 3rd floor with your default weapon equipped, an armory will spawn on floor 3. This is useful in two ways, gaining time with a non-combat room AND giving you access to a weapon roll.
3 - System clock and Doppelganger (OUTDATED)
You can effectively choose your Doppelganger class by changing your system clock. December 1st, 2022 is a Sorcerer day, and December 2nd is a Gunslinger day. These are the two basic viable Doppels, as it has been found that Doppel Wanderer can't give you multiple of the same non-combat room per floor.
4 - Weapon pools (OUTDATED with the addition of explicit rarities)
Weapons in this game can only be obtained in certain situations. No matter how much you reset, you won't find a SOUP or an explosion scroll in the first boss reward. This means you have to understand what the best weapons for each pool is, and find something that can carry you to floor ~4,5,6, where you'll be able to find the best weapons that can carry your run to the final boss.
We're working on figuring out the exact pools but for now, know that the best you can find early is :
- Crimson Staff on floor 1 boss/ floor 2 armory
- A good scroll on floor 2 armory (Firestorm, Acid Cloud, Blizzard) to synergize with Static Blows (blue perk)
- The earliest "viable" weapons (meaning viable until Death) are Unholy Bible on floor 4 and Explosion Scroll on floor 6. You can also run with blizzard scroll but it falls off a bit late game.
