Hi, I made a new mario 64 speedrun extention that i had someone on the discord optimize. and is now in the run to become a official run it's a 16 star run with only coins stars, this is the route and rules
Rules for 16 Coin Star: - Beat the game - You can only collect 100 Coin Stars and Red Coin Stars - SBLJ is banned - Ddd sub star is allowed bc of fire sea - LBLJ, DW Reds (1), LLL Reds (2), HMC100+Reds (4), Metal Cap (5), CCM100+Reds (7), WF100+Reds (9), Aquarium (10), Wing Cap (11), BoB Reds (12), BBH100+Reds (14), SSL Reds (15).

If there is truly some unique strats then it may be pretty nice to watch. We’il let time tell us.
would secret stars (ssl secrets) count as coin stars? maybe a dumb question but if so this would be a really cool route/category
OK so the SSL secrets were heavily discussed in the making of the run and it was determined that through precise movements/tas, it is possible to collect that star without actually touching coins, so it is not technically a coin star
I was actually on simply stream and he actually saw a message I sent about the run. He said he wouldn’t do it cause he’s mostly a 120 runner but said he looked at it and thought it was cool. But told me to keep doing PR to other people/runners.
Yeah I would think Secrets don't count since the "Secrets" are actually just invisible objects/trigger points. The coin is just placed as a courtesy to the player so you have some sort of visual que/hint.
Neat idea for a run though. The 100/reds are some of my favorite stars in the game (long, uninterrupted sections of movement), and this could be a fun way to practice them.
the run seems like a fun way to practice harder stars for beginners thats not too long. I don't know why you would have any strats that are actually different than 70 or 120 for an optimized route but its definitely a really cool idea for a category.
Yeah I think this would be cool since different routing would be required for 100 coin stars without reds
The strats are different bc. we don't have the shell in LLL. In CCM, we usually combine 100c with the penguin race, which isn't possible in this category. In JRB, 100c+reds would require the ship star, so that is out. In BoB, we don't have the cannon or the blue coin from Koopa. For BBH, we don't have vanish cap. And in SSL, 100c+secrets is not allowed.
Pretty cool category! I hope it gets added to the category extensions leaderboard. One question though: isn't getting the LLL 100-coin and the vanish cap red coins stars faster than getting HMC 100+reds? I can't test this because I suck at LBLJs lol
I mean he made a test route and you’re free to do your own path and see what is faster. Just like any categories. If i could speedrun sm64 on mobile i’d have attempted it by now
LLL100 has two problems. First, we don't have the shell. On foot, this star is much slower. Second, if we enter the volcano, then we can't get back out. So we would need to enter the level twice, first for reds, then for 100. Or we collect 100 coins just outside. There are 107 coins outside, but it's very slow, since we would have to kill bullies to get their coins.
Vanish cap is pretty slow, because of castle movement. It takes a while to get there. Then, to get back, we have to enter the level again and exit course.
Granted, my HMC100 is very slow, but a better runner can do it much more quickly.
