I did a 16 star speedrun of the html port of SM64 the other day for fun, honestly almost did better with just using a keyboard than using a controller on a system

i mean, its based on platform that you are playing the game on, not the controller. i assume you will be using emulator

Yes you can, but it's a lot harder to do tricks, i always played with keyboard and i was able to do pillarless like four times in my life.

You should get a controller, it's so much easier. It's up to you though.

I’d recommend a cheap USB GameCube controller, you can probably get one for less than $15

imo keyboard > bad controller , especially those without notches. Keyboard has a fundamental disadvantage of digital input, so u cant walk and move other than the 8 directions. however, those limitation made the some trick easier to learn since u wont hold weird angles. ive only seen 2 runner on keyboard tho, one is top 20 16 star and sigotu which u can find easily on every leaderboards.

You can get a good third party Xbox controller for US$18. I’ve been using it for about 2 or 3 months and it’s served me well.
