There's already a variable written in for using Nabbit or Yoshi in a run. Even if the run was strictly as Yoshi, making a separate category for it would be pretty redundant.

One small thing is that I think they should use RTA unless they’re levels that specifically use IGT, such as Wiggler Races and KO Arenas.

New York, USATheLemonyBard7 months ago

Yeah it’s okay if it’s not default, we can just ask to submit under IGT for those specific categories in the rules. We can disallow the use of any pausing beyond resetting, as many IGT games do.

The issue with the Switch is that it only records 30 seconds, so runners would have to record each section individually to guarantee the entire thing gets recorded, and it often has a small break of time in between each recording, making RTA very difficult to time. IGT for stuff like that is also just slightly easier to verify, but that’s just an added bonus.

We could do that for the levels if you want, though I’d also be fine with just leaving them blank when not applicable (an example of a game that does the same is the NES Remix series). I always thought the N/A thing seemed a bit cluttered if there were too many levels.

Also, I think Rank-Up should just use IGT. As long as pausing isn't abused it's not an issue and makes timing easier, plus it makes it easier to record for players on Switch who don't have a capture card/were practicing without one and would have to use the console's capture to record each individual section of it. If it's suspicious then the monthly rankings could be checked so long as they haven't reset (they may also track them differently on Switch and PC, with their own ranks. Not sure tho).

Ah, perhaps you're right to not put in the achievements, at least just yet. And yeah ILs stands for "individual levels." I'm going to be a bit busy this week, but when I can I'll add levels into the leaderboard!

One idea that might have more ground to stand on (though I still think ILs would be good lol) would be things like all levels and/or all achievements.

As silly as it might sound, I think we should have ILs. Though some will be just about mashing, I actually found it challenging to even optimize levels like the first Pin Pull one (kept getting 1.7X or higher but eventually got 1.69). There will definitely be tied WRs, but I think it would be a goofy fun challenge for a lot of people. Hell, I’ve moderated similarly silly ILs before and would do so here if I was welcome to and needed.

Sure, I'll be a mod! Idk how much I'll be able to verify because I have a new job that'll take up a lot of time but I definitely will still do so. I can also help organize it on here with categories and such.

It appears that this is a Scratch game that you made, but after finding your profile it looks like there's no way to access it. Can you link the game, and release it if you haven't?

Alright, it exists and you can find it here! https://discord.gg/NFbJpkmy

Also, funny enough if you let the final part scroll all of the way but try to exit through the left, the boss fight starts as normal!

New York, USATheLemonyBard1 year ago

Attached is a video showing how to skip the first boss. I’m not yet to the level where this could give me a world record or anything , but I definitely think the community should know about it so that a record can use it. A few addendums to the video:

  • This IS possible in all versions; I bit the bullet and bought the NES version to make it slightly easier to record and to test the glitch. On that note, imho I think the platforms should still be in the same category, as the differences between versions seem purely aesthetic. Totally cool if you don’t, I’ll probably run all versions but I think maybe putting it so that new platform runs don’t obsolete old platform runs for individual players instead.
  • The glitch is consistent when done correctly, I just wasn’t consistent enough to make it work well yet.
  • The glitch works elsewhere, but so far this was the only real practical use I could find. The little prologue part can use it to skip the room with the large door, but the first room scrolls longer as a result so I believe any time saved is less than half a second if any time at all. More testing needed to be sure, of course.

Enjoy! Hope to have an okay run submitted soon.

Hello, I just played this game and want to speedrun it, but it looks like there needs to be some updating. There’s now a version 1.35 for Evercade and PC that removes the NES part of the name, which seems to be identical to the 1.3 version minus the new name so that much might not have to be changed, but the new platforms should be added at least. Thanks, and I hope to speedrun this soon, probably on Evercade!

If history is any indication, it’ll be added as a separate game on SRC. Even the Live Arcade version has just been added as a separate game.

Yeah I'd say that's pretty good :P

That said, it did make me realize that I need to clarify something in the rules lol

When I added the bit about sound being on, it was mostly for the music to be audible to make it much harder to splice a run between levels. I didn't make that clear and I see no evidence of splicing in your run, so the run is all good. Going forward that will have to be a thing tho

Additional information:

All Stars NG runs that use an old save must also add an additional 3.233 seconds to reattempts of any level, so long as the level was completed. This applies to redoes in all categories, but no other category requires a redo (and doing so would only harm a run).

If a consistent and timely manner is found to reset saves on PC, this whole rule may possibly be removed. Runs that abide by it will not be affected if this were to happen, but it would mean no others could be done in this manner from then on. Keep in mind it’s not set in stone either way, so it may stay forever or it may not.

Keep in mind that added time will be added in addition to any time lost from the game notifying you of a new PB in a level. If you want to run NG on an old save, I suggest making your ILs relatively optimal.

I should also clarify that when I say levels need to be played in order, that’s solely for NG. I figured most would know that, but I just wanted to clarify.

All of this said, I’d like to find a way to make an automated timer to make full game runs exclude load times. This is relevant because it’s easier to remove saves on Switch (and presumably other consoles), but it was not particularly well optimized for Switch so the load times are exceedingly long. Doing that would at least ensure that Switch users would be able to do NG on an actually new file without worrying about lost time. I kinda want to learn code and already have an idea of how this sort of thing could work, though I think code exists already that could facilitate this kind of timer.

(This technically can apply to NG+ as well but is usually redundant in that category.)

Considering that Steam makes starting a new file a hassle, combined with the fact that the PC version is the optimal version to run for full game runs, I've edited the rules so that old saves can be used in NG runs without giving what would otherwise be an unfair advantage to users of old files; as a matter of fact, a full New Game will still be optimal, but as I've said, starting new saves is very inaccessible on PC.

For those familiar with the separation of timing methods in Super Mario Sunshine, the new rule works in a similar manner: in Sunshine, if you use a glitch to skip certain cutscenes, it saves time irl but the time saved is added back so as not to punish players who don’t mind sitting through them, as they’re not normally able to be skipped. Similarly, we will add back a rounded-up time to the run for old save files, which will differ depending on the category. For the new games on every category, this is how much time will be added back:

55 Levels: 3m 8sec 80 Levels: 4m 33sec 105 Levels: 6m 0sec All Levels and All Stars: 8m 42sec

Those starting on a new save will take longer irl, but will be at an advantage to old files, as the time added back for each is assuming that (1) every IL received 3 stars (which is a timeloss of about 3.233 seconds per level), and (2) the time taken to get back on track after getting the new world unlocked notifications is about ten seconds for each notification, which is relatively slow. This is rounded down to fifteen seconds total for 80 Levels (instead of twenty), as transitioning to the new worlds is necessary for this category alone. On that note, it should be known that levels still have to be played in order. 80 Levels is currently the only category where levels can be skipped, as it literally requires it. This will be changed if the need arises.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
