Even from taking a point on top of the Nether roof as the anchor and even assuming all not-yet-generated chunks to exist, the blocks below are enclosed in a combination of bedrock and world border rather than entirely in bedrock, making the goal of the category not achieved. This is on top of taking a nonsensical anchor point and confusing "creating" with "entering". So no, your "2." is false.

@itsryan212 There are no extra rules needed, the run is already invalid

I appreciate the wit to do a run that would also make sense under a completely different name, but:

  1. He didn't create the empty region, he merely entered it. If the area he sells as a "mined chunk" counted, then the leaderboard would be the same as Enter Nether, as that's when the first "mined chunks" on top of the Nether are generated.
  2. Taking any reasonable static reference point, for example the area of possible portal spawns, fortresses, bastions, most mineable blocks, mobs etc., the blocks that were left unmined in the chunk are not entirely enclosed in bedrock (they're not enclosed at all).
  3. Even taking Steve as a moving anchor (which is not justified by the rules), the blocks not mined are not entirely enclosed in just bedrock, but rather in a combination of bedrock and world border (which, by the rules, is not a valid completion of the goal).
  4. The run clips completely through a solid block which, while not normally major enough to break the framework of a "glitchless" speedrun, is definitely the main game-breaking glitch that makes this run an order of magnitude shorter than a run without this glitch would be.

Kinda sad cause I was hyping myself up for some really sick bed-based mining.

yahooless basically seems to mean no longjumps. That's a pretty small restriction (as dives and jumpdives are about the same speed, and doublejump dives or triplejump dives clear a similar distance), and it probably doesn't change that much about the strats in the run. So it's kinda hard to see why it would be interesting.

I did a run of a more impactful restriction a while ago, using no longjumps or triplejumps and only 1 wallkick to get all 120 stars rather than just 70. That's doable (hardest mandatory strat probably quite a bit easier than DDD red coins with the sub), and it alters the gameplay by quite a lot (i'd estimate an optimized run to be about 2:00-2:10 hours long). The reason I restricted those 3 jumps in particular was cause a sign in the BoB room said I wouldn't stand a chance without them, and I wanted to demonstrate how that's wrong.

A clear definition of what gives points is useful.

  • Pressing the button to pick up something off the ground: 1 point
  • Opening a chest to obtain the items inside: 1 point?
  • Receiving an item through a cutscene: 1 point
GermanyIwerSonsch3 years ago

Run it before suggesting. Preferably, get other people to run it too.

It will be retimed anyway I think, so the timer shouldn't be an issue at all

There's "Tier V enchantment" in general on the extensions extensions sheet, is there a reason you're thinking specifically of a diamond axe as the target? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BJiKWjk0Ee2wq8IXwtL4vtvGft6Pp3TEoeY0R0sQwn0/edit

A likely more clean category like this is All Quests, which has a world record just under 10 hours. This category can be found on the extensions board, perhaps because it isn't popular enough to be listed on the main board.

Generally, it's hard to define what game mechanics are glitches and what aren't. There are games with categories that ban some of the most game-breaking glitches but allow smaller ones. Super Mario 64 barely saves time with any game-breaking glitches in 70 and 120 star, however, so there's not really a need for a "glitchless" category

Not quite, Dora. There's minor things like Calamity stunlock, stasis tree ride, and bowspin

That doesn't work because the IL timings start later and end earlier than the splits of a full-game run. Here's the actual community sum of best. It takes 56:57.

GermanyIwerSonsch3 years ago

that's a lag frame counter, it isn't a full-game run where no such information cheats are allowed

  • Be reactive with your firepower and conservative with your expensive instants (chompers, cherrybomb). Spam cheap instants (potato mine, tangle kelp) on cooldown, saving them for a short amount of time when that will generate much better value (e.g. wave 9).
  • Try to count to 9 waves (or for the first flag, 3 waves of size 3) and try to save resources (e.g. cherrybomb cooldowns) for reducing that wave by 100% as fast as you can.
  • Get a feel for when you should pause sunflower placements to keep sun ready for firepower (typically, less than 10% of the time until you have 10-20 depending on the level).
  • Try to learn typical openings, sunflower totals, and damage setups for each level - you can do that by watching runs.
  • You can use wall-nuts to stall out a zombie at a lawnmoower, only letting it loose once another zombie spawns in that lane.
  • Place the third puff-shroom reactively. Puff-shrooms mostly belong on the 7th, 8th, and 6th columns, counting from the left. The first two puff-shrooms can go into the column 8 spots of rows with a grave on column 7 and no grave on column 6.

One thing that should be worth keeping in mind is that once you've spawned a new wave of zombies, the old wave of zombies doesn't affect zombie spawns at all anymore. This can lead to situations where a lawnmoower can be even more efficient than usual. For example, if two regular zombies spawn on wave 4, you only need to kill one of them with e.g. a Squash, and the spawns will immediately proceed while the other zombie makes its way into the lawnmoower.

And also, in general, unless the last spawned wave was the 9th, 19th, or 29th wave in a level, the next wave will always spawn immediately if you reduce 50% of the most recent wave's current health. This means, for example, that you want to (often) focus down coneheads moreso than regular zombies, and that you don't have to invest a whole lot of resources into damaging a conehead quickly if he has already lost like 40% of his HP and isn't going to eat your plants

Perhaps just as a platform to select and not as a category. So if you run say 70 star CCC, you can run it on Switch and submit it to the 70 star CCC board as a run on Switch. For the main board (70 and 120 star), you might have to find a different solution.

Some categories, like All Red Coin Stars or All Coins, might be interesting under the restriction of no BLJs. For that, a subcategory allowing any version but no BLJs could make sense if there appear runs

GermanyIwerSonsch3 years ago

The problem with this category is that SBLJ, let alone DDD skip, is agreed to be a much harder and more runkilling trick than LBLJ, and so if you can do 8 star, you can likely easily do 0 or 1 star, or 16 star with LBLJ, and not lose a run 6 minutes in trying to skip DDD.

However, this changes in certain settings where SBLJ is no longer harder than LBLJ. Talking about Blindfolded here. If Blindfolded SBLJ gets implemented into a run, then Blindfolded Any% would become 9 star, as opposed to 16 or 1 star, and that would likely be a category
