Nebraska, USAHey all! It's been a bit. I think we all need a break after that competition. Apologies if it got away from us a little bit.
Some changes have been made to the page:
- 100% and All Gems removed due to lack of runs. They will be added back as soon as anybody shows interest in running them. For reference:
100%: Collect all 300 gems and get all 33 gold medals in the time trials from a fresh save file. A run starts from the moment you select ‘Select File’ on an empty file slot on the file select screen, and ends when the “continue” button appears on the results screen at the end of the final level you played. (You must show the file select or world select screen after your run to confirm that you've earned 100%.)

- Down-patching is now allowed in runs, but currently discouraged until proof that warp or glitch implementation is viable, due to crashes and bugs on older versions. No harm in letting our few active runners experiment if they wish without punishing them for it. Here's the excerpt:
"Runs can be done on any version of the game, but old versions are considered volatile, in addition to potential crashes, any extreme enough glitch may result in older versions being separated from newer ones on the leaderboards, so run on these versions at your own risk."
- And lastly, All Main Stages has been changed to make it more interesting to run, and potentially watch. Any% is long, and not everybody wants to route gems, so this will go back it's intended purpose of being any% without the routing and cutscenes. (Sorry Gribbin, wanted to include those world 6 levels for you!).
Hopefully these changes will make this a more appealing category for beginners. (There were no previously submitted runs for this category) Post game stages are no longer part of the run, but boss islands ARE now a requirement.
This game is so inconsistently consistent, and I don't know what's causing it or if it's in my head. It bugged me in the demo too. Like, I'll get a hard trick 5 times in a row, and I'll think hey good now I've got that down, then I can't get it again the next 30 attempts. (the one at the end of 1-5 as an example)
Other than that, this is an amazing speed game. I'd be fine either having the dev try to fix, or banning DJ from runs when the comp settles down, even though it does make for some neat skips, because it seems very luck and/or controller dependent.
I'd love to hear what you all think though.
Roughly 4.3 seconds added to account for the new timing clarification, any runs in or near top 10 post competition will likely be retimed for better accuracy, so for now don't mind a +- 1 second margin of error.
Hm, those load times are a bit concerning, especially that 20 second one. I hope switch is viable for top times.

I know this is splitting hairs, but do we stop time when the background for the results screen shows up, when the stats block first appears from the right, or when it finishes counting?
You might want to hash that out with Ryan before the competition officially starts, because the rules make it sound like you're encouraged to play on a complete save file:

Additionally:
"Fruit collectables, bonus levels, and gems are not required for a run to be permitted."
Fresh save would mean having to do the entire intro, cutscenes and all too, for each attempt, which would be about 3-4 minutes for each reset for something that isn't even part of the current rule set.

Regular stages. I assume because we wouldn't be able to play the boss if we used the time trials exclusively, and using a variation of the two would be a bit strange.
On one hand we have to deal with the screen clutter of collectibles (I already don't really notice them anymore) and no IL timer, as a trade off though, we don't have to move down one menu option every time you we open a level in the menu, and as somebody who ran the demo for a bit it is very nice to not have to be careful in the menu and just to be able to spam through.
Nice catch, I had completely forgotten, that was allowed in the 1-3 comp, so unless ryan has to say otherwise it should still be fine here.
Water boosting (spamming the boost while entering water to be able to boost constantly through the water) has been fixed. Double jump bug is still in (getting a higher jump by pressing the jump button twice very, very fast), but feels like it might be even harder to pull off consistently? Which is the opposite of what we needed, but hopefully it's just in my head. Everything else physics wise feels exactly like the demo.
"Grapple Dog Demo" has been changed to "Grapple Dog" in anticipation of the full game and following the removal of the demo. Have fun playing everybody!
Something very exciting is coming up very, very soon. SuperRareGames (@Toadsanime on twitter, PR behind the publisher of the game) and Trash_Bandatcoot (Original competition leaderboard guy) have been brought on board as emergency mods in anticipation of a surge of activity, but more mods may be needed yet if you're interested and knowledgeable about the game. It will be a temporary position, unless you want to stick around of course.
Categories will not be added until for a few weeks, for user friendliness because I can't imagine anybody will want to run those during the duration (you'll see I promise), but if you do message me and I'll make sure to get them added once the competition ends. (Any% and IL's are guaranteed, with 100% and full world runs as a solid "maybe" if there's enough demand)

What does that mean for this page? Unless there happens to be in game leaderboards in the full game, I'd like to convert this to the full game page once it comes out. Old times (so just 1-3 times since nobody else ended up running the demo) will be ported, assuming 1-3 is exactly the same from a speedrunning perspective, otherwise it will have a defunct, historical record alongside the full game version of the level. Demo% and the other two levels will likely be thrown out entirely for simplicity's sake.
Also, for those who bothered to read this, I'll give you a tip-off that I received in an email a while back. (I hope this isn't confidential???) There seem to be plans for another speedrun contest to be held at time of full release. :)
Found it during the steam game festival, I love those events. Being on the ground floor for new indie games is super exciting and I'm surprised they don't get more traction. It's like a game expo but without all the pesky people.
No release date yet, but according to an article yesterday it's close (https://wireframe.raspberrypi.com/articles/getting-into-the-swing-grapple-dog): "When we caught up with him for a chat in early November 2021, Gribbin was just in the final stages of development on his canine adventure. Grapple Dog is a simple, breezy game on the face of it, but it’s clear that Gribbin’s putting a lot of care into the smallest of details ahead of its release. “It’s close, but there’s still a lot to do,” he says. “The majority of the content is done, I’m just in the process of stitching everything together so the game flows nicely… Grapple Dog is the most ambitious thing I’ve ever made, and I’m so excited for people to play it.”"
Based on this I'd guess late Q1 or Q2 2022, but probably best not to speculate and just let the man work :P
Times from the 1-3 Speedrun Competition held during October 1st to October 7th have been imported. An incredible amount of effort was put in by all parties and you should all be very proud.
