Copy what Cyd said. With burned discs you´re basically still playing the same game and you shouldn´t have any unusual adventages.

Ah i thought this was the new one, since i saw an even older guide than this before, dang.

Anyway i basically wanted to write a sentence that goes. "Bla bla you can find out more about the discussions in our Discord (<- clickable link as word)"

Doesnt looks as nice when you put the link besides it (i want it to look nice lmao)

Are forum posts not included with this, or are Discord links just not working with the conversion to normal words?

Hey everybody, We've got some important updates to share with you regarding Sonic Colours: Ultimate.

Following several findings and discussions about lag-strats in the last few months, we´ve decided to change and replace certain rules and thus create a all new category called "Variable fps".

But before we get to that, let´s look at what has changed. The old game rules of Colours: Ultimate state the following:

  • The original game and all its contents must be preserved and unmodified.
  • As a result of the game's many framerate-related mechanics and tricks, please list your framerate cap of either 30, 60 or 144 fps in your submission.
  • As of Oct 9th 2021, all runs done on PC are required to cap their framerate to one of the three options and make sure their video has a visible fps counter to verify the cap. Due to the game's performance issues, occasional lag is fine, but do make sure you pick a framerate cap that your PC can handle mostly consistently.

The new game rules will look like this:

  • The original game and all its contents must be preserved and unmodified.
  • As a result of the game's many framerate-related mechanics and tricks, all runs done on PC are required to have a visible fps counter.

The removed sentences will be rewritten and added to all categories except "Variable fps" :

  • Category rule #1.
  • Category rule #2.
  • [...]
  • Please list your framerate cap of either 30, 60 or 144 fps in your submission. Due to the game's performance issues, occasional lag is fine, but do make sure you pick a framerate cap that your PC can handle mostly consistently.

IL´s will have this short sentence added to their respective category ruleset as well:

  • Please list your framerate cap of either 30, 60 or 144 fps in your submission.

Now that this is sorted out, here is the ruleset for our new category "Variable fps":

  • Complete all 45 stages in the Egg Shuttle challenge mode in 1 sitting.
  • Use the In-Game Time provided by the game after you finish Egg Shuttle.
  • Only fill out the In-Game Time column on your submission. Please leave the Time column empty.
  • No extensive or frequent pausing. This will be judged on a case by case basis, mods may either make a note or reject entirely if you pause too much. This is a single segment category, do treat it as such despite the timing method.
  • Players may change their framerate during the run. Please select "Variable fps" as your framerate on your submission.

It basically is build upon "Egg Shuttle´s" category rules but with one important addition. PC players can now play stages at 30, 60 and 144 fps all in one run. They can do so by changing the monitor refresh rate or using our recommended program for showing the fps counter: RivaTuner. It also enables every player on all platforms to manually lag the game, since you are in a way changing the framerate by lowering it, meaning that submissions getting skips like the TV Boss Phase Skip accidentally will no longer be rejected. They will rather be moved to the new category board. It can also be seen as a sort of playground for limit testing to find out how fast an "Egg Shuttle" run can be cleared, without the fps & lag restrictions for both PC and console players.

For now we will list "Variable fps" as the first Misc category and depending on how popular it gets, we might move it out of there again. How to lag the game on all the platforms has been heavily discussed in the respective Sonic Colours: Ultimate-text-channels in the Sonic Colours Speedrunning-Discord (https://discord.gg/QjWTShBhh8) and while we do accept it for IL´s and "Variable fps", we do not recommend it, as we can never ensure if it is completely save for your console or pc to do so. Nevermind the likelihood of crashing the game, which is fairly high.

For all other categories ("Egg Shuttle", "Any%", "100%" and "Game Land") our stance on this topic still stands. Manually lagging is still strictly prohibited and when submitted will not be defined as "occasional lag", but rather be labeled as "your pc not being able to handle x fps consistently". Currently we do not intend to add a "Variable fps" option for the other categories, since they´re not even close to being as popular as "Egg Shuttle". This is obviously subject to change in the future.

That should be all for now. We wish you lots of fun with the new category and thank you for reading! ! :CubeWisp:

Hi everybody,

We've got some important updates regarding the use of the emulator for Sonic Colours (Wii).

After some careful consideration we´ve decided to review the rules to not only keep up with time but also make it more accessible for you guys.

Currently we have only allowed runs to be on the board if the Dolphin version used was strictly 5.0, nothing below nor above. With this point now changing, certain settings to play the game in a way that's acceptable on the leaderboards needed to be adjusted.

These are the new Emulator rules:

  • (NEW!!!) Dolphin version 5.0 or later must be used.
  • (SIMPLIFIED!!!) Default emulator settings have to be maintained:
  1. “Emulated Disc Speed” must be enabled.
  2. “Enable CPU Clock Override” must be disabled.
  3. “Skip EFB Access from CPU” must be disabled.
  • (NEW!!!) The window's title bar showing the emulator version, framerate, etc. must be visible in the video. If your version doesn't show FPS in the window bar (versions past 5.0-17995), you must enable the following manually:
  1. Check “Show FPS” in the Graphics settings (Graphics → Advanced).
  2. Check “Show Frame Counter” in the Movie settings (Movie Tab).
  • Modifications, cheat, editing .ini files and emulator exclusive functions are not allowed.
  • Emulator must run at full speed. An occasional lag spike is fine, but consistent slowdown is not.
  • Emulator is only allowed for Egg Shuttle and Individual Levels.

Need any help finding these settings? Check out the sticky emulator thread on the forums.

Note: Any of the emulator rules shown above may be changed and retroactively applied if new information about emulation is found that would require a rule change. The moderation team reserves the right to reject any run in case of suspicion of emulator build inaccuracy or falsification.

So what has been changed?

We have simplified several rules regarding settings that are already set up the right way on a fresh install of Dolphin. For reference these settings included the following:

  • ""Speed up Disc Transfer Rate" must be disabled in the properties of the game iso."

This setting was inverted to "Emulate Disc Speed" and is enabled by default.

  • ""CPU Clock Override" must be set to 100% or turned off completely."

The actual setting's name (in 5.0 as well) is "Enable CPU Clock Override", and it's disabled by default.

  • ""Under the graphics settings, in the hacks tab, please uncheck "Skip EFB Access from CPU"".

This setting remains the same and is unchecked by default.

Newer versions (past 5.0-17995) do not show the FPS-Counter in the window's title bar. Therefore you now need to manually enable it as explained in emulator settings.

For further reference on how these rules came to exist in the first place and as they are still the basis of our new rule set, it's best to check out the thread on the Sonic Heroes SRC page, as well as the old Emulator Announcement Thread on the Sonic Colours (Wii) SRC page.

Sonic Heroes: https://www.speedrun.com/sonicheroes/forums/4m5el

Sonic Colours: https://www.speedrun.com/sonic_colors_wii/forums/imscw

As of November 19, 2023 the updated rules will apply to the leaderboards of both Egg Shuttle and Individual Levels.

Lastly, huge shout-out to @Avikaielef for researching and giving us all the advice we needed!

Sorry for the late reply, genuinly did not see it.

In terms of which categories currently exist, we have a thread (https://www.speedrun.com/de-DE/sonic_colors_ultimate/forums/mh4dx) here on this site, as well as on our speedrunning discord, which explains how categories get added to the boards.

As per most popular demand, the people running the game decided that the Collect-A-Thon on this game should not only include the Red Rings, but the S-Ranks as well, given there is now a percentage counter on the map menu.

Now that does not mean, there can not be an All Chaos Emeralds-Category like on the Sonic Colours-Wii boards in the future! As of now, nobody really just felt the need for the category/nobody played it and opening a board that is empty does not make sense either.

If you manage to get people to play the category you want to exist on the boards, by playing it yourself and showing it off to others, as explained in the mentioned thread, your chances are likely we will add it.

Adding to Avi, it definetly is enough to watch other runs to begin with. Though as you get further and further down our rabbit hole at some point communicating with the community, as well as having access to detailed explanations and footage in our discord, is probably a must.

Back to the starting off part, Auraace uploaded a very helpful tutorial video, that I recommend everyone to watch, as it provides you with everything you need for now.
