make sure you're "comparing against" "personal best" (option can be found in the right click menu)
the number of attempts counter might not be a good addition. seeing that count rack up as you reset over and over again is not a nice feeling and besides, your livesplit keeps track of that in the background at all times.
personally i think usually games designed for speedrunning (or with speedrun modes) are the least fun to speedrun. it feels less like another more free way to play and challenge yourself but instead like just another way to play the game as the dev(s) intended and curated. of course this is just my opinion and how i see it.
i would personally instead of making a whole "speedrun mode" i would just give all users quality of life settings:
- such as an easy way to skip all dialog (see how cave story+ on switch does this for example.)
- you can always track the players completion time and then have a setting if you want that displayed (note that for in game timers to actually be useful they have to be accurate and consistent accross all platforms at all times) and the timer would ideally pause during loads but not menus or any gameplay.
- a death counter can be a fun little thing to track and show at the end of the game regardless if the player is casual or speedrunning (ocarina of time has a death counter on the file select :D)
- a collectible precentage sounds like a normal thing you should absolutely have as again its useful for every type of player
and even if you do add an in game timer, people will likely make an autosplitter (using the in game timer) so you should make easy checks for certain events in your game. like a memory address that you can easily find with cheatengine. for example a simple integer that tracks the level number (can be used to split when it changes in memory), a variable that could maybe track the last picked up important item (so you can split if the last item is changed to X), and you could make a boolean that is true if the game is loading (so you can pause the timer if people want to use an external loadless timer).
as long as your controller has enough buttons its fine. if it has notches on the stick(s) its even better.

the "never" is very poorly named though.

speedrun isnt a sport, its a hobby so you can do it in anyway you want. most important thing is to have fun so choose games you love try them out, see if you like the run.
all games have the same types of "get sub Xminute time" that are nice to go for.
