I think joysticks, good ones, might be on to something, quickly switching left and right, and precise button taps, but those are modern ones with Sanwa or Seimitsu parts etc on an emulator. I was going to try it, but figured it would be exhausting on the hands eventually and the less hand movement the better for speed running.

I think a custom joystickless board with all buttons and a good layout for smb would be even more interesting, if someone took the time to master it.

I don't think nes advantage was a well made stick though. I remember Kosmic streamed it once and it didn't perform well.

until someone does it, game is not perfected or 'solved', and even then, someone still has to do a perfect run, then, it's over. Which is impressive feat.

I would do openemu but framerates are slower, so nestopia mac is my only choice for macbook, but 10 save slots is not enough.

I kind of want to chop the game up into the important bits and pieces and do dozens of saved areas to practice, anyone know if it's possible in mac?

don't be discouraged, it's so niche what you're asking information on, nobody really cares about blindfolded smb, if you're into it and you enjoy it, keep at it though, but don't expect fanfare at the end, do it for your own kicks.

@WolfAttack maybe I got the terminology wrong, but there's no flagpoles and no load times, so there's not much to do except 4-2 ww and 8-4 wj and you can pepper in as many fast accels as you can, otherwise it's just clean running, the world record video is pretty uneventful.

It's called super mario flow, and it's not that hype, because almost all the hard tricks in the game involve frame rules and the flag pole, so it's who can fast accel best and slight turnaround optimizations etc.

the best smb speedrunner would still be traditional any% because it's harder, but maybe a fun ce.

can't some smart programmer brute force it or decompile it or whatever they call it and settle the final time once and for all?

@Gietie I don't think anyone has even come close to 200k attempts, even kosmic who ran for like 10 years had maybe 50k? also, some talented general speedrunners from other games have got 456 in not many attempts in a short time like Adam Ferrari and coolkid.

This game isn't like ninja gaiden where Arcus grinded 8 hours for months literally almost everyday and got nowhere beating an old wr, smb isn't the hardest speedrun game and progression can come quick.

200k attempts is easy that 1 will be perfect I think, but who cares really, nobody will do it.

@Rkool21 you misunderstood me, I know how hard this game is, and I know the top runners obviously have social lives, jobs, school etc, I'm saying, if somebody had nothing going on, and literally play mario for 2-5 years everyday a perfect game can likely be done in that time frame.

I think tying rta tas is possible if someone honestly had nothing to do but play smb for 2-5 years, but it would have to be recognized by guiness or whoever as a perfect game of smb for it to be worth it.

Yeah, I see how the time barriers are like artificial milestones which is satisfying, in most games the wr holder will be alone in their minute or second time they achieved so that distinguishes them, but smb1 eventually just becomes a gang of guys, wr means less if it's a frame or 2 difference that nobody but the hardcore 'scene' even understands the mechanics that went into it.

I get what you're saying about the community aspect, I'm not much of a speedrunner myself, follow a few games loosely, I would consider it but things like new strats just showing up kind of scare me, people can dump years into a game and then something new or easier comes out and someone new does it and beats them and its almost like all their hard work was for nothing.

but aside from dragster, pacman, there are only a few games that are 'done' and can be done 'perfectly' and I think smb1 is one (its 35 years old and the tas's, tas and rta, are pretty rock solid) so that's cool to me.
