Yes. What emulator depends in if you are going for PC or AppleII.

For PC we usually use DOSBox. Since the game can be obtained free legally from GOG, where it is setup with DOSBox already from them, that is typically a good route. It basically runs as needed for a speedrun without needing to adjust anything.

As this is not a claim for 1st place, i feel a full video is not needed and this posting of only a time in the video should be sufficient.

Oh! Forgot to ever post the solution here. It is simply clicking Left and Right mouse at the same time or rapidly back and forth that speeds things up. I find just pressing them simultaneously works to speed things up quite well.

For the True Ending% (what i was calling Final Stage %), which is stage 10 (Area 25), you need 50% of the data points to reach it, as you can not get past stage 7 without that many collected. 50% are required to reach stage 9 (Area 23). 100 meters is the requirement for stage 10, but you still need 50% of the data to get to 9 before you can reach 10, so both are required.

So basically you have two requirements to get to the Final Stage / True End:

  • Collect 50% of the data points in the game to be able to reach Stage 9 (Area 23)
  • Reach 100 meters to be able to reach Stage 10 (Area 25)

Though i imagine the rules to such a category would only mention Stage 10 as the data points are simply requirements to progress to that point. Rules would likely be something like:

  • Starting from a new game, reach and Beat Stage 10 (Area 25). A new game must be started to ensure you start with no Evolutions unlocked.

After i started running this game i found myself wanting a longer category that reaches the final stage of the game and not simply only the completion of easy mode.

First proposal (and my current favorite) would be a Final Stage run, where the goal is to reach and clear the final stage from a new game. This involves playing through the 7 easy stages while collecting the data collection points, then playing through the medium route, while collection data collection points in the first 7 stages of that route. You then will be able to unlock stages 8 and 9. By the end of 9, you need to be at least 100m to reach the Final Stage and clear it. Something like "Final Stage %" This is likely about an hour long run from my first testing of the route.

Second proposal would be a category that simply gets to the credits, which requires beating stage 9. This however is so similar to the above proposal, that i believe that is a better run. This would be something like "Credits %"

Third proposal would be a category that is 100% clear of the game, which would be beating every stage and getting all data collection points. Unsure how long this would take.

i have attached a video of me doing a preliminary Credits % run, in which i failed to reach 100m before the end of stage 9 (had not properly routed in the Fury building needed in the previous areas).

Should have console copies of the game arriving soon so i can play on hardware and do full routes of each of these.

Also just noticed that the top PS4 category run of King of Kaiju% is a PS3 run by the same person. Though there is no PS3 category available to submit to.

It does not sound like that would in any way make the game faster. I went and read the release log for it, and everything seems to check out as only patching music and adding the exits back to DOS. These do not seem like they would give you an advantage during a run in any way at all, so I do not see why it would not be allowed.

Good call out! To keep it consistent, we will set the start time at the Are you Male or Female? question which sets you are the start of the class selection(same as choosing New Hero in the NES version and consistent with the rest of the DOS games. The end time will be set to entering the mirror. I will update the rules and update the timing on the video to reflect the new timing. Thanks!

Considering the VGA patch is a fan-patch, I would say no that we should not allow the reload and exit commands that it introduced, as that is not part of the base game feature set. However, I see no reason that we would not allow runs using the VGA patch, as it does not seem to affect anything else about the gameplay. Would love to hear other opinions on this as well though.

For cycle timing in DOSBox currently the rules for the DOS version of the game as listed in the category rules is: "When using DOSBox use a config with core=auto, cputype=auto, cycles=500."

Agreed on this split. The games will have significantly different runs.

Sounds like a good standard! ^-^

Watching sppadde's runs, i've notice their ability to fly through the dialog at insane speeds, but i've yet to be able to find a good way to do this. Dialog in my game seems to be limited to the speed at which it accepts click inputs. Is there a keyboard shortcut or some other trick to help speed the dialog up? Using the GOG build with the default GOG dosbox settings.

As a note, one pc i have only lets me run it at 12000 without very serious long pauses interrupting the game. My stream pc thankfully lets me run it at 14000.

As there are no rules for Low% No Cheat Mode, what would make this run different than an Any% No Cheat Mode run? Generally the term Low% is used for runs where you get the lowest amount of things, experience, levels, etc needed to complete a run and can often be far longer than an Any% run of the same category.

Swedensquibbons5 years ago

From the Any% guide, are we using the following DosBox settings as the standard for U7 pc runs?

cycles=12000 joysticktype=none ems=false umb=false

What other settings if any should we be concerned with or do standards for this not really matter?

Is there a good resource or a video that works for the Max Rain % category? I'd like to learn it and run it, but the only current run on the leaderboard has a broken video link.

Swedensquibbons6 years ago

I'm absolutely going to try and run this route soon! thanks again!

There are no runs for the SNES version, but a mostly(but not exclusively) console runner, I've noticed there are no separate leaderboards for the SNES. The game is actually very different, smaller world, no day night cycle for npcs, different and removed npcs and dialog, no boats, no functional moongates. (http://ultima.wikia.com/wiki/SNES-Port_of_Ultima_VII)

I am not suggesting creating boards before a run is created and ready to submit, but if someone did a run for the SNES version would it be considered?

Unrelated, I want to try my hands at the DOS runs eventually.
