You didn't kill him you didn't even hit him. Slow it down the shark behind you killed him and you eating the green pellets to the right is what triggers your evolution. this is the frame before he died, you were parallel to him

There isn't lag or catch up, lag and catch up looks a lot closer to non fluid movements that don't follow the direction of the cursor or moving a direction without looking at it. 3)The spirals that slow you down take over a second to cross, hence why its recommended you avoid them as they can add between 1-4 seconds onto a run and cost you kills, you crossed that in less than a second.
