That's awesome, good work

Has anyone noticed any big differences in IGT between runs? My IGT seems to be different from my RTA by a pretty consistent amount on all runs which indicates that while the IGT may be fucked it is at least consistently fucked.

I think first off everyone needs to stop and reflect on is it really worth getting this stressed out and antagonistic over an RE game that is pretty marginal and unimportant in the grand scheme of speedrunning (which arguably isn't the most important thing in the grand scheme of things generally). Just start over and chalk it up to miscommunication cos it's really not worth the agro.

Secondly, the fact this always has been a marginal game is shown in the lack of testing into IGT, response times of mods/runners, rule changes etc. People have got other shit to do and there hasn't been the incentive to pour hours into the game as the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I'm sure this could change if the game gets more popular but obviously not going to happen overnight and don't really get what the rush is, everyone just run console or emu while waiting for the desired outcome to happen.

Thirdly, I'm pretty sure every serious runner of this game knows how fucked the IGT time is so its not a case of stupidity or ignorance. PSXjin was chosen so that everyone would have a level playing field as at the time no one ran on console. I understand that gives console runners a disadvantage and if there are more console runners I would personally support splitting the boards, but I wouldn't expect that to happen overnight.

Enjoy the blog post guys

I believe it is because of the inconsistency of door loads, framerates etc across platforms and regions that it was decided to use IGT, the same as many of the RE speedruns. Everyone just runs the JPN version on emulators to give a level playing field.

My RTA if you add on the cut scene after last hit on the final boss is never too far away from IGT, always within 30 secs or something. I imagine IGT doesnt count door animations or first cut scene but it's never crazily off RTA. As with most RE games, the IGT is a bit of a law unto itself. Also in case you are not aware, the menu pauses IGT so don't worry about menu nav and optimisation.

Apologies if someone has already said this but the streams part of the site isnt refreshing for me, anyone else have that problem?

I'm not sure if you're suggesting that his original vids may have been fake or just that because the vids are no longer up the run should be voided?

If you mean the 2nd point then got to disagree, the vids are reviewed and moderated when put up to be legit. If that video goes down (which happens to me all the time) it doesnt mean the original run never happened.

As a third party observer who casually runs these (none of this really affects me as times so low!) does this not also invalidate his WR run in DC1 as this is also segmented. Can't speak for whether its legit or not as don't know enough about it but from what Seph was saying about DC2 run, gives cause for concern about whether DC1 run is legit.

I just started learning the route for DC as going to start running this and one thing I noticed is that Easy mode saves c. 20 seconds over Normal due to:

  • Quicker kill of the first raptor
  • Not having to pick up the grenade gun as already have it
  • Faster rex section at the heliport

The rules don't say anything about difficulty, however, everyone seems to run this game on Normal and wondering why if there is a pretty clear time save on Easy?

A lot of the RE series fit the bill and you can either emulate or get the PC versions for free (nb. I would never advocate piracy).

IMO you shouldn't worry too much about WRs and should focus on beating your PBs for a game that you enjoy running. It all depends what your aims are, if you want WRs in a competitive game them concentrate on one game and practice thousands of hours. If you are more casual then run a game that you enjoy.

I run Mario 64 (badly) and use a PS4 controller, don't feel like I could go significantly quicker if I had an N64 controller so I would say for beginner runners you definitely won't lose out using a non-optimised controller.

Use DS4Windows and set up your controller on that so you can use it wirelessly and then just map in Project64.

I find using R2 for Z and the right stick for the camera buttons (never owned N64 so not sure what they are called) works well with everything else mapped to the obvious buttons.

All good with me.

Thanks for the explanation Max, makes sense. When you say fin/jin are 45 secs slower than epsxe do you mean RTA or IGT cos I don't feel like my PBs are significantly slower in terms of gameplay than the times around them on the LB (again might just be my setup and crappy laptop).

Happy to use fin/jin also, just curious what the thoughts are on runs already completed using other emus on the LBs?

WalesZooball6 years ago

Noob question here so please bear with me.

Why would different emulators produce different times? For RTA I can understand that some emulators run faster than others or have rendering issues so makes sense that everyone should use the same emulator. However, since RE:S is IGT, I thought that the IGT is calculated by counting frames so why would running a faster and a slower emulator produce different IGT?

From what I have noticed, the people who use pxsfin have a faster RTA with a larger gap between the RTA and IGT (c. 3mins) compared to epsxe which has a slower RTA with a gap of about 2mins.

However, again this is just from what I have seen, the IGT for decently mirrored runs doesn't seem to be that different albeit this is based on a small sample size.

Regardless of your answer to the above, I am happy to use any emulator as doesnt make that much difference, however we would have to agree on whether to wipe times from the LB that don't use the eventually agreed emulator.

I'm just wondering what setup people have for playing games while out and about.

From what I can see online there are a lot of options from buying and hacking a PSP or a Vita to buying a controller for my Android phone and using emulators.

What do you guys use for this?

Ah ok that makes sense, thanks anyway, I better get practicing these skips!

WalesZooball6 years ago

Hi all, I used to run this game awhile before I started submitting runs on here but as I did not have the resources on here to learn about skips and glitches, I used to do glitchless runs.

Is there any appetite for having any% split into glitched (pretty much all the current runs) and glitchless.

No problem if I am the only person who would do this so no need but didn't know if there was anyone else who enjoys playing it this way?

WalesZooball6 years ago

Ah I see so you don't get it for just getting the S Rank on normal, you need to have collected all the weapons first?

Thanks for the info on the conditions, really useful to know, makes for an interesting run then as you would never be 100% if you were going to get the S or not.
