Category is created. Kayachlata, I added you as a verifier. Congrats on the WR. :)
Please let me know if the category & the links under Resources are looking good.
Thank you for taking the time to create the guides Kayachlata!
Some thoughts regarding the rules, where I wish input from others.
- Rule 3 can be removed? Feels obvious that console isn't allowed. I'd rather have fewer rules, partially for readability and we can't write down all possible cases. It's not something that is clearly stated for other categories and I've never heard someone ask about it either.
- Showing the seed can be a guideline instead of a set rule? There is an argument for it to be mandatory to make it easier to check if someone is cheating, and for allowing others to try the same seed. On the other hand, speedruns are reset heavy and going into the menu and back before each attempt is annoying. Mainly I don't see strong arguments for it being a must.
Is verification necessary? In general a video + timer and the rest following a honour system is good enough for me.
Starting with a pre-igniter and receiving one in the first jump isn't the same thing, and my understanding is that the Hyperspace changes things inside of the game. So I don't see why it wouldn't be a completely new category instead.
Isn't the naming system consistent and clear as it is? A new category could be like Beat the game (Hyperspace, seeded) or something similar.
If players want new categories, awesome! If there is a will to speedrun category X I'm open to adding most things. I do ask for some things to be prepared beforehand. Partially to ensure that it's a serious request where people will do runs, not just "this would be cool". But also, and mainly, to give other players the chance to do their own runs.
-
Show a video of a run.
-
Create instructions for what players need to do to start a run (how to install mods, start with a specific seeds etc.). This would be added to the resources/guides section.
-
Create a ruleset. The 4 suggested rules, do they sound good to the others here? Anything you want to add/remove/re-phrase?
Speedruns surely takes another skillset than regular runs, keeping the composure when a fast run is on the line was hard for me.
The TAS defeats the flagship around 3:50, That micro is impossible for humans but, as you say, still possible to go faster than we have.
Thank you! That's nice to hear. A big reason I'm still somewhat active is that Rackagack does all the work with this site for a few years.
Some thoughts regarding possible ways of improving: (Note: This won't mention all the plenty of good decisions which were made)
2:55 & 3:30 Cloak to avoid any risk of boarders teleporting over? 3:15 Buy fuel for remaining scrap? 3:30 Faster and higher damage swipe from doors to pilot 3:40 Pause and fire the glaive immediately destroys them while they are cloaking? 4:03 Switch to Halberd for the second swipe 4:30 Attack? Always tricky to know how much you should farm, end scrap was nearly perfect. 5:20 Didn't de-power hack 5:50 Store directly instead of distress? 7:30 Initial targeting 8:50 Power Halberd 10:22 Pre-cloak the hack drone is not favourable? 10:50 Door upgrade does nothing in phase 2. Do upgrades before phase 3 instead. 11:25 Initial upgrades 12:00 Hack sooner (I'm rusty when it comes to FTL, so I hope I don't inadvertently mislead someone)
That said, nice to see your persistence and high-quality play paying off!
My favourite decisions were skipping the store at 8 min and avoiding the outpost at 10 min.
Some short additional info to MrJollyWeepers good answers.
It is allowed to run older versions of the game, the only way to compete in the category actually. I've got older versions stored and they can be found on the open sea as well.
The low amount of runs is because the category was added mainly for posterity, mainly I wanted to give cred to Darktwinge and it's fun to see how they did it on older versions.
Record a run and ask a mod to create a category and it's a decent chance you'll be granted. It's all community driven.
Good points Uppercasserole, needing another program could invalidate the sector skip for normal runs. Something to have in mind until the skip is figured out.
I see no reason for sector skipping to be banned. What might happen is that we create a misc category called "Beat the game, no sector skip". For speedrunning in general, all types of glitches are allowed. Check games like Oblivion and Vice City for examples.
As for how to create lag, running something like video rendering or a graphics test in the background might do it. When comparing Zerglings and Weepers skip the timings differ a bit, so I doesn't look like a frame perfect thing to me.
I'm the mod for FTL and after some restructuring I wish to have the game ftl_delete (https://www.speedrun.com/ftl_delete) deleted. Since that means there is now just one game page, FTL: Faster Than Light (https://www.speedrun.com/ftl), there is no need for a FTL: Faster Than Light series to exist anymore, so please delete that as well.
Sounds like a good idea, I´ll add the category this weekend. It also makes it a bit more interesting in terms of weapons and ships. Stealth B should still be among the fastest alongside Zoltan A. But maybe a fast firing laser setup could work as well.
