you're from ireland, so i highly recommend getting an equalizer 64 instead of a gameshark. they're a lot cheaper, always 3.x, and originally from the uk, so you should be able to get a good deal.
you should try out the 32bit version of obs studio instead of the 64bit version.

game sound is needed in order for a run to be verified, you can record the game audio without hearing any of it though.
you can't do a 16 star run without the 50 and 70 star door blj, and there is a leaderboard for 31 star and 50 star on the sm64 category extensions page.
lol, no you do NOT want to buy a retrolink n64 controller, this controller has one of the worst sticks imaginable. some emu players use xbox 360 controllers, but the only really good choice is an original n64 controller or hori mini pad controller with a raphnet adapter for minimum input delay. you can also use the cheaper mayflash adapter if you're starting out i guess, but raphnet is the way to go. there are no rules for what to use.
if you do not want to make investments i'd stay stick with the xbox controller.
like gothic said, look at the start of ssl reds. slidekicks are useful there because they allow you to keep the speed you gained from the slope. other basic movement techniques, like longjumping, diving and jumpdiving have a speed cap so you using them would be slower in this particular situation. you can also pull a slidekick off with very little speed, giving you a quick boost. i mostly recall that being useful for backups, such as going quick into a loading zone and being able to dive again on "quicksand"(such as in ssl pyramid) if you're slowed down by the sand a lot already. theres some other little movement in the game where slidekicks are theoretically faster but it's mostly not a good idea to implement in rta. also on the topic of the movement techniques, in sm64 you always have to take the spacing into account. "longjumps are most consisten, so they are perferred in speedrunning. jumpdives are good, if you - again - have frameperfect input.", thats simply not true. all these movement techniques have a different outcome in the stages because you have to take the spacing, angles, texture, etc. into account.

I don't really know what we are discussing here. I said this: "But you could just do it and not care about the leaderboards if you want to." I just offered an alternative, I never suggested his runs should be on the leaderboard with GS.
Why not if he doesn't care about his run being on the leaderboards? You answered like you only read the last sentence of what I wrote and not even that one thoroughly.
The no music code doesn't remove lag because it doesn't remove the music but sets it's volume to 0(The old no music code removes the audio completely though). For Single Star and Stage RTA you can use Cheat Codes, but for RTA Runs(120,70,16, etc...) having a cheat module plugged into the N64/using any cheat is banned. But you could just do it and not care about the leaderboards if you want to.
I tried to think about points which speak in favor of adding the categories, just because in my opinion it's neat to have them all on one place but there aren't really strong points in favor of them, however neither are there any strong points against them. Objectively, the only good point I can think of is conveniency, in regards to looking up a run but especially in putting a run on the leaderboard.
I don't think that because of a misc button other meme categorys will ever be added on it, because there is no demand from the community to add them in the first place. 31/45 have an embedded place in the history of speedrunning SM64 and they have been on the leaderboards before, hence why people want them back on.
i remember domdunc saying that when the blj was found they only used it for the endless stairs first and after 2 days it was discovered you can do it to skip the 50 star door as well. so 50 star was the any% category for this game for 2 days lol. i thought about routing this sometime for fun. making it an official category or any big issue wouldn't make sense though i think.
