Hey everyone, we got some big rule changes today!

As of today, the only allowed emulators are mGBA and Bizhawk using the mGBA core. VBA has been banned due to inconsistencies. If you previously ran with VBA your runs are grandfathered in but we kindly ask you to switch to other options. If there are other emulators that run accurately please let us know and we can discuss about allowing more. These are just the ones we know run in a way that's close to an original GBA. It is also now recommended to use a real GBA bios inside mGBA or Bizhawk. These are the new rules:

Emulator Rules: mGBA and BizHawk with the mGBA Core are the only emulators allowed and must be set to original refresh rate (native 59.7275hz). Using a real GBA BIOS is recommended for a more accurate experience.

You may not use emulator specific features like cheat codes, save states, fast forward and turbo buttons. Do not reset using a save state.

Showing the full emulator window is recommended to ensure these features were not used.

Switch NSO: Due to Switch Online and DS running at different refresh rates we've decided to convert these times for a more fair playing field. Other platforms don't need converting as far as we're aware.

We're making these changes to keep things fair but we also want to keep this game as accessible as we can. If there are any concerns don't hesitate to reach out. Happy running!

Hey @jojoretrogamer I had the same issue using my Everdrive GB x7. Whenever I press right I always run way too fast but everything else is normal. Must be a hardware/flash cart bug. Someone in the comments on the itch page linked an ips patch that fixes the bug for me. Would this version be allowed for speedrunning? I don't think it changes anything else besides fixing this bug for flash carts.

Look for a comment by the user "sukus" for the patch. I can also post the patched rom as a resource if allowed.

Switch has been added. Nice job on the run!

These categories have now been added under the Misc. tab for now https://www.speedrun.com/sma#Single-Character

The reason we don't have them is because it'd flood the leaderboards with categories no one currently runs. I would love to add them if they get enough activity. So far I only know of one other Luigi no save and quit run. Would love to see your run!

Sorry, I've been a little busy but just got around to verifying the run! Congrats on the complete yoshi eggs run! Sub 1 hour too :) I like your suggestion for the ruleset and agree with them.

The difference is that Ace Coins save the moment you grab them and it's done from a fresh save file. Nothing suggests that's unintended. The Yoshi eggs don't look like they function like that so I'd be hesitant on allowing that.

When it comes to adding different categories that may "not be suggested by the game" I would be hesitant on adding them until there's a good amount of people interested and invested in such categories. I'd love to add All Ace Coins warpless, mario only, luigi only, peach only, toad only etc. (True 100% for sure!) But that would result in a very empty and messy leaderboard. That being said, I would still encourage running those categories even if there wouldn't be any leaderboards for them. With enough interest and recorded runs, that can change.

Nice find! It'd be interesting to see what could be done with this if easily replicable. Thank you for sharing!

I checked out part of your run not too long ago to get a better idea of the category and your commentary was quite insightful to me. Cool to see you're still around!

My assumption would be that it makes the most sense to complete each level normally since that's usually required too. The use of a 100% save file is mainly to make it more friendly to run without having to set up a save file for each attempt that has the game completed but no yoshi eggs collected.

That would be my stance right now but I'm curious about what you guys think. I don't have much experience with this run in particular so if you guys have any ideas or opinions they would be very valuable. I think it'd be nice to add more clarity to the ruleset for the category.

Hey, always good to see interest in the game! jw and I talked about it and we believe that allowing the usage of a 100% save file for the category would be best for it. So the rules will be changed to allow for that.

I've added Nintendo DS as a selectable platform. If your run was performed on a DS, please submit it with this option selected. If a past run was done on DS that we happened to miss, please edit your submission as well.

Happy running!

We recently had a discussion in our discord about the timing for this game and came to the conclusion that as of July 10th, 2020 we're using a different timing method. Timing starts at selecting 1-1 and will now end on closing kamek's textbox in the final level instead of the final bowser hit. This was chosen as you haven't beaten the game yet with the original timing that was chosen long before we came around and you could still technically die. We felt that it's not an appriopiate place to end the run. We've carefully looked at our other options and went with the last input before the credits for multiple reasons. The other method we considered was to end at the results screen but after a lot of consideration we came to the conclusion last input made more sense along with it being easier to time for the leaderboards. It's also in line with the original Yoshi's Island timing which is a nice bonus.

This means that from July 10th 2020 onwards runs will now end at the last kamek textbox after having beat the boss. Any runs that were done prior to this will receive a 28 second time penalty to make up the difference. Unfortunately not a nice solution but we figured this was the best way to go about it. Vods would end before the new timing ends, vods that did include this part of the game wouldn't at all rush to this point and we don't know what happened in runs without video. Therefore we thought a time penalty of 28 seconds would make the most sense. I hope you understand we took this decision with the best in mind for the community and it's future. Over the next week we'll slowly update the leaderboards to reflect the new timing rules.

Even if a discord won't see much activity it would be nice to just have a place for sharing stuff but I think that's fair. Was considering setting one up for myself and a few friends that have been interested in picking the game up to easily store info.

@Acid_Rain One thing I would like to share with you specifically I might aswell do here is that you mention the birdo in 1-1 to be RNG in the description of your 1-1 IL but it's actually not. I'm not sure if you knew this or learned about this at a later point but birdo works on a global timer like pretty much everything else in the game that starts when you boot up the game. It counts to 255 and then goes back to 0. So if you were to softreset, enter the file at a specific time and play 1-1 very consistently you could manip birdo to spit out an egg the moment you enter the fight. :) Haven't figured out what determines what red birdo spits out tho :/

Is there a discord for this game? If not I think it would be a nice idea. There's very little info on this game out there so it'd be nice to talk to other runners.

Same. I'm most likely gonna try to get into this game and I'm curious too why Warpless isn't a catagory on the leaderboards. Would like to give that a shot ^^

And also... Shouldn't there be a catagory for all ace coins? Seems a bit weird not to have one since that's one of the key differences between the original and the advance port.

Was genuinely happy to see 31/45star back for a day but I'm confused as to why they were removed again? I think they are interesting catagories and kinda sad to see them removed again.
