Hopefully this ought to help clear up a few things regarding what versions of the games are around and whatever else could cause some sort of a fuss should someone end up submitting a run playing a particular version.

恶灵古堡 - Resident Evil / Taiwan games 生化危機 - Biohazard / China games

Now as a weird bit of confusion, the first set is actually on the Chinese side seen as the "Taiwan" localization, but in mainland China and Hong Kong the movies and certain comics have been released with the "Taiwan" title.

China uses the opposite one for the movies and comics, but sometimes products may carry both as a non-specific "Asia" version. SO, if you're looking for things in certain places or sites you'll only end up seeing a few particular things due to this bit of confusion. Part of it seems to have stemmed from how the manhua were titled as they were so popular, so the naming scheme is a trainwreck at times.

Hong Kong based ones may be in either Chinese, or English in individual releases as with older titles (Bio4 and earlier) it's been more uncommon to find combined versions.

So this is going to be long, but here's the list I've had for general reference, though this is only with versions of the names I've seen on products, or actual listings so I'm missing a few variations of them (some specific typos or various alternative character choices that ultimately still read the same) -

Format: ENGLISH JAPANESE TAIWAN MAINLAND KOREA

Anything on particular lines is probably due to spotting formatting of each title having a listing online with some of the potential alternative characters that still give the correct name of the series even if it doesn't match up to the packaging completely.

Now, given the fact that bootlegs and frankenstein material (official copies of things getting butchered and put into something unofficial) are a known thing in some releases there was the inclusion of stickers/stamps that feature the C of the Capcom logo to confirm it IS an official product and some versions may have a spot on the product for where the sticker was to be placed upon.

If it was completely missing the sticker then the odds of it being a fake did increase, though most of the bootleg stuff will be completely lacking any sort of trademark details.

Versions

Biohazard PC

CPC.BIOD1 Asia / ENG Comes with a large box, smaller jewel case inside and seems to have both English and Pinyin versions. http://www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/item.php?id=regame_re1-pc-asi1

Serial/Catalog unconfirmed / South Korea / KOR http://www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/item.php?id=regame_re1-pc-sk1

Initial release came in a large softbox, with a smaller jewel case of the game. It was later re released with a small jewel case, but with a slipcover as the budget line Capcom Premier Collection.

Biohazard PC + Graphics Card Bundle Serial/Catalog unconfirmed http://www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/item.php?id=regame_re1-pc-hk1

I dug up a press release from the manufacturer of the graphics card from 1997 which stated that there was both an English as well as Pinyin based release within Hong Kong. There was no serial number on the external package, most of these usually have the ISBNs stickered to the product outside the sealed wrap around the packaging so without these on-hand the product numbers can't be identified currently.

Anything that has gotten an Xbox 360 or an Xbox One release should have gotten an Asia/HK or South Korea release, but I'm too lazy to add them in.

Other regions like India, Thailand and whatnot have been excluded as there's even less information in some regards to note down and given the focus on speed I've only really included a few particular regions.

Recommend checking against these two collections -

(Korean) http://blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?blogId=asxcv123&logNo=50097773089&categoryNo=0&parentCategoryNo=22&viewDate=&currentPage=9&postListTopCurrentPage=1&from=search&userTopListOpen=true&userTopListCount=5&userTopListManageOpen=false&userTopListCurrentPage=9

(English) http://www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/

A personal recommendation for a Taiwan middleman, I've picked up things via stores and auctions through this one and am also happy to show e-mails between the agent and myself for further proof if needed: https://miakyou.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/online-shopping-agent-for-taiwan-ruten.html

(Please note that Taiwan Dollar prices may be a tad expensive with currency conversion).

For a couple of Japanese middleman services, these are two I've used in the past often enough and without problems (US, JP to Australia or JP to US) https://www.shoppingmalljapan.com/

For a Japanese based middleman service that charges in yen, I recommend this one - treasure-japan.com

These ones are perfectly fine to handle Amazon Japan, auctions and other store orders (including eCapcom weborders).

There are many Taobao middleman services, I personally used Taobaotrends/tbtrends. Given there's been some problems with them changing their domain names around, I would recommend looking into other middleman services that invoice you via Paypal as a general precaution.

For Hong Kong / Yahoo Auctions Hong Kong, I've specifically only used OneBidJapan as for a number of years they've been one of the few middleman services that handle Hong Kong or Yahoo Auctions HK in general. Their communication is poor, to basically not existing. If you can find any other reputable middleman services, go with them and only use OBJ at your own risk purely from the lack of communication on items arriving or being shipped out.

Gmarket Korea has international buy and ship functions in the same regard as Taobao does. You may not need a middleman service for them, but there are plenty around now that Gmarket is no longer purely limited to South Korea only.

Now there are some bootlegs around but they're usually pretty easy to spot:

  1. There won't be any sort of Capcom logo or trademark details anywhere
  2. The print and things will be wrong and won't match up to other official materials (guidebooks and so-on) so it'd be very obvious with having a totally off logo with terrible quality of an item too.

http://i.imgur.com/3HlPJTW.jpg

Other ways to spot some of the fake items around is that Capcom used a 'stamp'/'sticker' security measure for a few years.

For an example, here are three official Capcom guidebooks from different regions - Two from the left are from Taiwan, the one on the right is from Hong Kong.

Now some stuff may be trademarked to Capcom (Japan), Capcom Asia, KokoCapcom/Capcom Korea or it may be a mixture of them. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CuCP5-8UsAI9SBx.jpg:large

This is perfectly fine to see, and if you're still not sure / if something may look a bit iffy, have a look for the Capcom seals like on the back of this Clock Tower 3 guidebook here - https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C9qWYjAUIAAcPTU.jpg:large

This can be seen on this Biohazard 3 regional guide too - http://i.imgur.com/XlAdSae.jpg http://i.imgur.com/SsZvohy.jpg

And it should be a general warning that there ARE demo discs of Bio2 and Bio3 in particular regions. Try and get a retail copy / boxed copy if possible to try and ensure you're getting the retail ones.

These are some of the sites you can use to find things from the lists I've jotted down.

China / General taobao.com amazon.cn

Taiwan ruten.tw tw.bid.yahoo.com

Hong Kong hk.auctions.yahoo.com

Japan amazon.co.jp auctions.yahoo.co.jp mbok.jp rakuten.co.jp

Korea gmarket.co.kr

If in doubt with a purchased game, check the content of the game and specifically check it against a JP version if it's a CHN or SK based one as they typically follow the JP versions in how their files are done. More in-depth ways to go about it can be done, but quite honestly put I'm exhausted and am currently going to leave this as-is.

I've seen a few posts elsewhere about there being problems with recording from some consoles with frame rates being off in things (to make up for the difference between the speed of the console and what it's being recorded at) so that's what I was wondering on trying to avoid that when recording and/or streaming - as I haven't used something like Livesplit before so I just wanted to make sure I had everything down before I start setting stuff up so I can try and avoid any problems.

(Edit: Sorry, I'm really tired so I'm probably not making any sense at the moment).

thread: Speedrunning

Complete newbie to this sort of thing and I'm just curious as to what would be the best way to handle Livesplit with OBS and an external capture card to get the footage from a console while maintaining proper split timing and frame rate?

Specifically as I would like to run a few PS2 titles (or PS2 titles via PSN classics on a PS3) that have the Real-Time Attack rule accompanying an emulator ban, but I'm not sure as to how to go about this properly as I haven't used Livesplit before.

If anyone could give me any advice on this, I'd really appreciate the input, thank you very much!

That is indeed a post by me over on Reddit, I was surprised to find some of the early models still working when I last looked through this version of the game and ran a little research, before running more research on it with Faiarrow.

That's why I joined in on this topic in the first place, and as I've explained to a couple of people by now:

Some of the products released in Taiwan initially also retail in Hong Kong and then the rest of the China where permitted and these are often trademarked back to simply Capcom in Japan, whereas products in Hong Kong may be trademarked back to either Cacpom in Japan, Capcom Asia or both.

Faiarrow did bring up something interesting of note: the Bio3 version we both have copies of uses the regional romanized system that is used in - mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. And that this was how the title of the Biohazard/Resident Evil series was originally written as, before there was a change and we now typically see the simplified Chinese title more frequently beyond particular releases.

There is no real uniformity in how the Bio products are branded in China - older products generally use the same as what I've typed out for the Taiwan version, but for instance the live action movies use the simplified version but then with the release of the Marhawa Desire comic it's gone back to the original title, for what I assume is to make it conform to the fact that the manhua for Bio2, Bio3 and CV in the region used that too and they were very popular.

So we typically use the name variation to narrow down where the product origin was, or the year of release because there's a massive lack of information due to multiple reasons:

  • The age of the products against the companies that were involved at the time, meaning that companies involved such as Dysin have dissolved or divisions have undergone changes - like EA did not have EA Asia's individual division labelled as such at the time. This means that whatever information that was on the sites listed on cases, manuals is lost if it isn't available via something like using the Wayback Machine or other website archives.

  • Because there's no uniformity in releases, without having physical copies on-hand to check it's otherwise impossible to tell what is real and what isn't, so the places where copies can be obtained legally (shops or second hand auctions) need to be narrowed down in the first place to avoid problems such as this from both a player perspective and a collector perspective.

I made that post while I was doing research and I've tested that those other models are not used in the game, but one of the early versions of the alternative Jill face looks like it may get loaded up - but you can completely ignore them as the PS1 versions have the same early models but I can't remember if they had the same textures as the ones I pulled up from the PC version, so either way it was irrelevant beyond making me look into this version's distribution method and the like because it looked nothing like any of the bootlegs I've picked up from China in general for comparison.

I never bothered to update that post with more information, so the information in here or on Twitter from both Faiarrow or myself is going from what we settled on and marked down regarding this release after being able to confirm at the very least, the versions we had were official. Just like how there is a Bio2 version and a version of Gun Survivor released on PC in Taiwan as well.

So with narrowing down this release to Taiwan, I've showed a couple of copies of the softbox version of Bio3 and even the EA release via Ruten Taiwan, Yahoo! Auctions Taiwan over the last few days. If you searched on say, Taobao using the same title variant - you wouldn't find much beyond manhua copies and the official Marhawa Desire versions.

So both versions are belonging to the China region, it's just that we have variants with both simplified and traditional in usage in either version so they are differentiated in that but with frame speeds having been counted and being nearly the same and them both being from the region - they fit under the China region umbrella, while they may have been based on the Japanese Mediakite release - they are not a Japanese region version, and they are not a widespread Asia release (because we've seen Korea having their own official regional version, other countries have as well) so they don't fit under anything other than China with that in mind.

TL;DR - Taiwan and China versions are both regionally the same, but while in the same region of release they do use two different written language systems in either version, despite that. So, the other one we don't know the exact regions of distribution beyond China overall and that the title version implies it likely is later than the releases which used the original title version and we have been able to confirm were distributed back in Taiwan first. This is why the 'EA' budget line version and the original softbox version have gained the moniker of "Bio3 Taiwan" and the like from us narrowing down the original regions of distribution to be able to obtain copies in the future.

Hopefully this clears up some of the confusion which in part I've unintentionally added to, but this is why I was curious how official releases in one 'region' that has official major language releases and packaging differences would be sorted into as it's not the exact same as the other Chinese version but it doesn't fit in with any other version either.

I'm probably just being pedantic though.

Well, if things are run with a regional version as they are at their base from a particular region what I was curious about is that would they be considered valid or invalid as a run for the game on a particular platform if the version they're using is their actual local version instead of the version being recommended which is despite being effectively grouped into the same classic console territory groups (like NTSC-U, J, PAL) but is a totally different regional version and most likely, language?

We know 3 isn't the only one with other language versions as the first three games and Gun Survivor have had localized releases and while they're nowhere near as common as the usual Japanese, US or European versions they are still around. So what would people using regional versions have to do in that situation - mark it as the closest region like UK or Japan and then make note of their actual regional version in this, or would that be disruptive to the actual regional leaderboards as is the case with the Japanese runners being restricted by respecting the law?

This is the only reason why I haven't gotten into speedrunning things because I have physical releases from multiple regions that are official purely from collecting things, and while I'm not fussed about which version I play - I'm just not sure where the standing is in that for particular circumstances without negatively impacting anyone by choosing to play a particular version of a game in my physical possession what things should be logged as, especially so if it was a person who was (in comparison to my circumstance) only playing their actual region's version of the game?

Or would that be just down to it being a factor of if and/or when it could happen that this same discussion would happen again?

I know, I'm likely just being pedantic about this but I figured I may as well ask as I have no idea about it.

FurryWulfz, I made it a number of years ago and as for that Jill's files are split into a couple of different ones (due to the change when you get the extra pouch gear) but - pl00, pl01 are Jill's default costume files.

You also have Tofu (I think this was pl0f in the first data folder) and other things sitting in the files that you can use for a general swap. PS1 version's costume files are compatible with any PC version of 3 if you have any problems with the PLDs in the game. Ignore the 'pl##CH' files as those are mainly incomplete as they're from an earlier version of the game, although in the Taiwan version there is a default Jill file with a different face which was also in the early model versions too.

Aha, that makes sense. Just figured I'd ask as I have some regional versions of other things as it's just a little confusing to look at from a non-runner perspective as to me I wasn't sure if things could only be done with particular copies of things and if that was the case, if someone used an official regional copy if it would be considered to be invalid and rejected when things are grouped in together.

Like, not relevant games but in the PAL territory - Clock Tower 2 has an individual English release, but there's also dedicated French and German releases and they're differentiated by their catalog numbers as the English version is not the typical multi-language that we see currently, and then under the NTSC-J umbrella on the PS2 is Clock Tower 3 in having a Korean version too.

That's all I was curious about as if that was the case for someone restricted to a particular region, like the Japanese players that it seems unfair if other times are done on particular versions that bloat out their version or to not have their version counted as it's technically not the "main" one.

But again, that's just coming from someone not currently running - this is something I've been curious about for a while as I would like to start but have been wary about which versions of things I use in the first place.

FurryWulfz - the folders that are unpacked were related to the 'rooms' for the game so that's why you can see the backgrounds in the 'BSS' folders as those manage the actual background packs for sections of the game.

For general reference on the file formats - http://rewiki.regengedanken.de/wiki/Resident_Evil_3

The ROFS.dat archives would've needed to be unpacked to localize the game in the first place as the RDTs (room data) were off the top of my head, packed into them and those are what would've needed to be changed.

So there's probably some sort of error in how the game was modified (that is, the new text and font tables needing to be inserted and things needing to be modified per room) that's caused it or it could just be a rendering problem when you consider the age of the games.

Either way, they are certainly a different (although regional) version so I don't understand why they would be grouped together into one with that in mind - like would this be used as a basis in the fact that other titles in the series do also have known official regional versions too to make adjustments in the future to make it easier to keep the leaderboards correct without negatively impacting people if more regional versions are used in general?

Thank you for doing the comparison, FurryWulfz!

I have no idea why there's the transparent problem going on, I was more involved in doing reskin things for the games and was surprised to find the EA one as the ROFS files hadn't needed to be unpacked to be able to access the character models so it was really easy to edit the textures. Went through my old Photobucket account and dug this out of my modded screenshots just to show that at some stage these weren't always transparent:

http://i.imgur.com/2f2Kvxd.png

It's probably possible to figure out how to fix it, but I doubt anyone wants to bother with fiddling around with the files.

As for the 'button' folder floating around - there may be the chance that there's a bootleg version of the Ubisoft distributed one floating around that's been repacked with stuff like a trainer and so-on, it's really hard to be able to say without that version on-hand to reference.

It wouldn't be particularly surprising though.

[EDIT] As for rarity, that's pretty much unknown as there's very little documentation on these releases as it is so production numbers or sales numbers are unknown but the Taiwan versions are more commonly seen on Ruten Taiwan and Yahoo Auctions Taiwan as well.

I have seen more copies of the full softbox version than any other, though I've seen by now a good five or six of the EA re-release. Loose copies I've seen plenty of (over 20 by now in the last couple of years), full box is much more uncommon. Have only seen one sealed.

As Faiarrow did mention, 3 was rather popular so it does make sense to have had more in terms of production in contrast to the Gun Survivor PC version from Taiwan with that in mind alone.

New South Wales, AustraliaEnetirnel7 years ago

The Ubi one is the one version I've not had a physical version of (from this region) so I wasn't sure which would run better but at least things are easier to narrow down what is what.

It would be nice to be able to pin down a date for the Ubi version, or at least a year to figure out the version order of these without having to go through the files.

I did find some dodgy looking ISOs earlier yesterday which were posted up with the Ubi release details, though one in that mix was quite clearly a US version of Resident Evil and I assume that set is probably the same as the also dodgy looking physical copy I saw on Gmarket for 1/2/3 as the first one was being labelled as director's cut which isn't possible for the first game.

So I'd just be on the lookout if getting physical copies for inconsistencies as that seems to be the one being referenced for the bootleg versions.

[EDIT] As for that, sorry I didn't see your reply Darazanjoll as I was making some food - the PC version's menu in other versions (including when you dig up the TIM textures for the menu leftovers of the sample Tokyo Game Show version) are all dated as 1999-2000.

The menu texture images are at a smaller resolution to the background so I always figured they never bothered changing them out because it's not like the menu needs to run at a better resolution.

There's other older files like incomplete models marked out with the 'ch' bit at the end of their filename and other stuff floating around, this version and the other PC versions can also use files from the PS1 version so that's another reason why I figured it was never changed. I can dump the TIMs out if you want me to?

You can see this going on in the MediaKite release briefly in this video on YouTube:

For the dates on the disc - we know there was originally a PC release in a large softbox back in 2001, and this was dated as the 2003 release. So with this being based off the original Japanese release that's why we have the date differences as even the Korean version wasn't released until 2001 and I think it likely used the same menus.

I'm fairly certain they haven't changed the dates on other menus in other budget releases, so that's nothing new there. Like the MediaKite version was released repeatedly with different catalog numbers between 2000 and 2004 in Japan (at minimum, referencing Crimson Ceremony/Lost Releases as I know Anders is generally on point with his date info).

Pointless to change the data out if they're pressing the same version on the game as it's just a reissue of it.

I just wanted to try and help clear some stuff up, though Faiarrow deserves the thanks for fishing out their copy in the first place. :)

For the sake of making this easier, I've taken some screenshots of the version Faiarrow has nudged over to Dudley. It's the same version that I picked up a few years back.

As I'm not currently using my computer, but rather one I'm borrowing - I haven't installed all of the language packs but it will display the text properly if you have them installed.

Directory of the disc itself from an iso of it: http://i.imgur.com/7SEPLzg.png

From the top -

Run the game options Install Biohazard 3 Uninstall Biohazard 3 Install DirectX 6 Install DirectMedia Exit launcher

Default directory will be Program Files/CAPCOM/BIOHAZARD3, it shouldn't be asking for registry access either. There are a couple of slight options in there, just go with the first option and install.

If you toss all of the files from the disc into a particular directory and run the installer from there, it'll automatically sort out the file pointers for you and you won't require a disc in the drive to run it.

The Mercenaries Menu: http://i.imgur.com/xB3Q0MB.png

In-Game (no transparent rendering items or alpha channel problems) : http://i.imgur.com/AD3dSD9.png

The game's backgrounds are actually 640x480 which is twice the original resolution which if you want everything nice and crisp will be 320x240 but the thing is that the backgrounds in the updated files are actually the larger resolution ones.

I've previously had a problem with one of the English versions throwing out an error with a crash on one of the ROFS archives and had to unpack them before to correct the problem and the game's ini file can be redirected to the individual folder directories when that's been done as that was the general workaround for it.

This version - the EA boxed one, does not include any game saves, cheats such as infinite ammo or an included trainer or cheat engine table. I don't know where people were having transparent texture problems or glitches but from a quick playthrough to the RPD I haven't seen any transparency errors, but I will say that there ARE transparency options in the game's ini file and there's optimization options.

It's things like that and problems with fullscreen/windowed mode occasionally - it's likely the horrible laptop I'm currently using to type this up being the stem of that problem, but the config menu is hit or miss on it displaying properly. It didn't display properly in other versions of the game for me, this version displayed properly when I last went through it back in 2014 so if it cuts off - use the ini file in the game's directory to map out your different controls.

I dug out my notes from when I last went over this version:

The underside of this version's disc is marked as BIOHAZARD3, I don't recall seeing any other catalog numbers, SKU, ISBN and so-on on the packaging. The disc and manual's trademark details specify that this is a 2003 version.

The manual makes references to other titles localized in Taiwan. Has info and reference for the old EA Asia Publishing/Localization division - contact info is correct, site URL now redirects to "EA Asia" - none of the games listed in the manual are on the website out of EA's own stuff in their current distribution lineup.

I have also seen marketing for this EA budget lineup in old magazines from the region, but I don't have a thorough log of magazines I've picked up from the region as I focused mainly on regional issues of things like Famitsu's Taiwan versions.

These were with my old notes, so I do apologize for the potato-like quality.

Disc photo: http://i.imgur.com/jxyhH4a.png

I can't seem to find my photos of the exterior box, so unfortunately that'll have to do.

The small circle above the Capcom logo is the old EA distribution logo for the region, it's just hard to actually see it there.

FurryWulfz, here's where part of the confusion happens with this - some of the products that are released in Taiwan are also released in Hong Kong so there can be both traditional and simplified used for those versions.

There's an awful lack of consistency between how things are marked individually. For a general example, a couple of things out of my Clock Tower stuff - http://imgur.com/a/ugwJx

The one in the middle has the little 'stamp' bit as a number of products in the region included a stamp mark with the Capcom 'C' part on it to designate what was officially licensed for the region and what wasn't as in the same region (the purple one is from Taiwan) there were other very poor quality guidebooks styled like the official Japanese ones but translated into Chinese and there are others that are very clearly just not official and don't try to make out they're anywhere close to being official.

I've also found official versions of both games and guidebooks 'frankensteined' is the only way I can put it, alongside unofficial releases. Picked up a bootleg of DEMENTO/Haunting Ground and it's matching guidebook to find official, legitimate copies of Chaos Legion with both the game and guidebook.

There really needs to be a proper look into some of these variant ones because it really is very confusing to look at.

New South Wales, AustraliaEnetirnel7 years ago

In all honesty, I don't know if the Korean version would be "faster" as other Korean versions of Capcom games I have like Clock Tower 3 are simply the Japanese version with some slight tweaks out for localization purposes as I've generally checked the data prior to testing on an emulator and console.

The reason I did jump in as there are specific regional versions of a number of games and that Bio3 does certainly have quite a few and the other regional ones are treated as dedicated regional versions for PC or console for Bio and other games so while we have the main NTSC-J, NTSC-U and PAL versions these aren't all the same build of some PS1, PS2 or PC games so it seems better to have some of these ones marked as such so that particular region ones aren't being put under one cover-all as an umbrella if there are actually speed differences within how each game runs.

Also, DudleyC_ the other company listed to have been involved in that one was dissolved in 2002 or 2003 from what I could find going through business listings and I've seen a few variations of that one's cover with different placement of logos and the like.

This is the only image I've seen of a physical version of it so far - http://i.imgur.com/jqdYjTe.png

I haven't found it any larger or clearer, unfortunately.

There is also this version, which I haven't been able to dig up the ISBN for and have only seen loose with the manual - https://tw.bid.yahoo.com/item/%E6%83%A1%E9%9D%88%E5%8F%A4%E5%A0%A1-3-PC-%E9%9B%BB%E8%85%A6%E7%89%88-Resident-Evil-%E7%AC%AC%E4%B8%89%E4%BB%A3Biohazard-100146572283

It has a corresponding guidebook with the same branding -https://tw.bid.yahoo.com/item/%E6%A9%AB%E7%8F%88%E4%BA%8C%E6%89%8B%E6%9B%B8-%E3%80%90-%E6%83%A1%E9%9D%88%E5%8F%A4%E5%A0%A13-%E6%94%BB%E7%95%A5%E9%9B%86-%E3%80%91-%E7%AC%AC%E4%B8%89-100020278277?%3b_ylt=Al8WfRf0qmsfBEWr1CAK1XhyFbN8%3b_ylv=3

The problem is that while some have ISBN numbers, a good amount don't and the ones that do aren't listed anywhere even with some of the official guidebooks between Taiwan and Hong Kong as I've looked around for more information on a few things in the past and there just is barely anything on certain regions unfortunately.

I've played the same version as @faiarrow and I have gone over the data between it and the Japanese releases, US version and the later budget Explosiv version of 3.

The game has all of it's files in it from what I recall as there is certainly a fake version going around with the cinematic/cutscene folder removed to make the game's size smaller. I don't recall there being any logo inserts over the Capcom one in comparison to the other version (which is in simplified Chinese, not traditional which does differentiate between the Taiwan release and a mainland or Hong Kong release).

For what it's worth, it ran smoothly without any stuttering or crashes on systems up to Windows 7 when I previously had some slight freezing problems with some of the other versions when the choice prompts were brought up.

I don't know how the Korean version runs, I don't think Anders (whose scans I linked to) has tried the PC version himself.

I haven't seen a fully packaged version beyond the softbox and the budget one up close, though the EA one is dated from 2003 and it has a white softbox outside the actual box but nowhere on the packaging was a catalog number and the older softbox one that I've seen from Taiwan didn't have one on there either which has made it a pain to locate. Part of the problem was that the site addresses given in the manual for the EA one redirected me back to the main site, but it was active at a point (it was to EA's old Asia distribution hub which is what the small little EAD logo is referencing) and there was stuff regarding their whole budget line in the region that was, off the top of my head called the "All Stars" one because there was confusion with the inclusion of the old "just great games" tagline.

I'm annoyed I didn't scan it because of the fact that I couldn't find a catalog number on the outside in the first place and that I don't really collect Biohazard stuff.

It just kind of fell into my pile of odd regional stuff like I have - the Taiwan products all reference Capcom, but the Hong Kong ones reference either Capcom, Capcom Asia or both. Though both also have individual distribution references in them and it's the same with guidebooks from these individual regions in having picked up both official and unofficial ones.

The Dysin/Ubisoft one I can't comment on as I haven't gone over a physical copy.

Taiwan versions should be listed as - 惡靈古堡 China or Hong Kong versions should be listed as - 生化危机 Korean versions as either of these - 레지던트 이블 OR 바이오하자드 시리즈 OR 레지던트이블 (no spaces for the RE name).

So I don't know, but maybe that might be of some help to try and differentiate versions while having a look for regional variants to play through.

If more regional variants are to be added, I would say that using Crimson Ceremony as a source would be useful as Anders is very careful about sorting through legitimate versions but prefers complete/mint copies of things and that's been difficult to find as it is with the Taiwan or Hong Kong product releases. There's a few things like official guidebooks for the region and it gets confusing as some of the Taiwan products retail in Taiwan and Hong Kong, but others may only retail in Hong Kong.

I'm just throwing in my two cents here, but the doubled-up title isn't uncommon especially with this particular game. There is even a legitimate Korean version that has a similar bit here, it's also lacking a catalog number beyond the matrix on the disc - http://www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/item.php?id=regame_re3-pc-sk2

There's another large, softbox version that appears to be the original version of 3 that has the same style as that Korean one above, but the Korean version also has had a budget repacked release as well.

So there are more PC versions of 3 around than what is listed on here, so with that in mind it's probably best to keep the versions apart.
