Because of the endless combinations one could make with both the number of categories each game has, and the number of ports, Id prefer that each MultiFF category sticks to a particular theme.

The NES+SNES pairing works is great, and I can see a general tendency towards Glitchless categories here as well. FF1 No Manip is the closest thing the NES run has to Glitchless, but FF4 and FF5 kinda stick out from the rest. Both of those do have Glitchless categories

If youre willing to make that adjustment, I think you would have a much better category imho

Hey everyone,

So as im sure many of you have noticed, im really bad at checking the forum posts for this game. Part of it is because runs are posted so infrequently I rarely check the page unless there is something to verify. The other reason is im just less active on the site with IRL stuff.

That being said, Im always active on Discord, so please feel free to drop me a DM there instead. I will respond there in a much more reasonable amount of time (either instantly if im at my PC, or within a few hours if im at work)

Cheers, Dubl

As long as you arent skipping anything while the disc tray is open (using it to skip the FMV for instance) then technically yes, its fine.

That being said, it sounds like you have either an issue with your discs, or your laser. In either case, I'd suggest looking into it. Both issues can get worse over time, and may cause you even more problems down the line.

FF9 Discs are still pretty cheap if you need to replace them.

Sorry to necro a 2 month old post, but ive been away from the speedrunning community for a few months working on Endwalker endgame.

As the others have pointed out, the easiest way to get a category added, is to show that there is a genuine interest in that category from multiple people. So I wont touch on that, im really replying to this in regards to Moguri Mod.

Moguri Mod does actually implement more than just upscaled backgrounds, it also offers features from Memoria Mod baked in, including 30fps fmvs, the ability to save anywhere, cheats, and a slew of bugfixes. I am aware that it is also entirely possible to custom install it without those features, but determining who does and doesnt have them installed is a moderation nightmare. This is why we have chosen to ban it.

That being said, there is a precedent for mods being allowed for use in speedruns within the greater community, and I wont say we are totally against it. I've told people in the past, that if the PC community were to make a fork of Moguri, one that doesnt alter the integrity of the speedrun (except speedrunning qol fixes which would need to be community approved), and one thats able to be watermarked for easy verification, I would support it. I cant speak for the rest of the mods, but I would be more than willing to plead its case with them.

If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a DM on discord, or ping me in the FF9 discord.

Cheers, Dubldrop

Please feel free to DM any of the admins on discord with what exactly you are proposing for "all achievements". Example: How do you define all achievements, how do you propose the timing work, any rules/restrictions you would put in place. How much interest you expect such a category to have (1 runner, 3 runners, 20 runners?)

We will review it as a team and look into adding it as a category.

Thanks, Dubldrop

Yeah, just follow the PC versions rules with the exception of obviously not being able to skip FMVs in FFX and you should be good. I'll add it once someone does a run of it

The only reason the category for console doesnt exist is because there was no interest in it. If people do it, we can add it. Rules wise we are generally flexible to accommodate the preferences of the people interested in running them, with the caveat that the rules follow the standard Any% rulesets that already exist for each game.

QuébecDubldrop3 years ago

Also yes, for X-X2 you can use whatever language unless the leaderboards for those specific games have a language rule. The rules on those leaderboards apply to these runs as well unless specifically stated otherwise here ie Turbo Controllers being allowed in certain catagories

So the thing is regarding FF8, I never knew that both versions were different, and if I had I would have locked the boosters% to the remaster. Im still considering doing that, but I need to discuss with the current WR holder if he is okay with doing another run since he used the 2013 version. For now, I would suggest using the remaster and then if we go with the 2013 version you can always improve your time by an hour for free.

I spoke to Elbod about it recently actually regarding a ruleset for those categories. Once I get around to making the rules I will give him a heads up. The main issue so far as Windows pointed out is that the people who do these all use different rules for their version. Elbod said he would be willing to conform to whatever we decide, so I will have those out as soon as I can

Turbo may be allowed in FF9 PC, but that doesnt mean it should also be allowed for FF8. If you're serious about sparking a discussion on the matter, you probably are going to need to come up with a better justification than not wanting to mash x for 3 hours, especially when regular runs already do that for 2.5x the length.

That being said, you are still more than welcome to run the category with turbo and not submit your time to the leaderboards. Just because turbo is banned from ranking in this game, doesnt mean you arent allowed to use it at all. There are several speedruns where my time on the leaderboards is massively slower and outdated compared to my "actual PB" and skill level simply because I felt like using turbo and not submitting the time.

Remember, at the end of the day, the most important thing you get out of speedrunning is not a number ranking next to your name, its the enjoyment you feel when doing a run. Do whatever you find fun.

Go to the location of your rom, and right click on properties. Copy the location of the file and paste it in the window, then click hack.

I was curious how I can go about submitting for a leaderboard that covers multiple games in a series, similar to the Multiple Mario Games LB, which covers categories like the 602. There seems to be a growing interest in running these marathon-esque categories and I am interested in setting one up.

I also reset over Cornelia Menu/Garland not so much pirates though. What Crrool said is pretty much correct, it does save time, but makes the run even more reset heavy than it already is when going for a top time. Also, the time save you get from it is entirely subjective. You will save more time if you would have gotten bad RNG on the walk out than if you get good RNG. I've had walks out from vampire that if I went for EE, I would save only 10-15s. Ive also had walks out where if I had an EE I would have saved 2 mins. Its really hard to know if it really is worth it to get or not.

Some runners will go for it, are willing to do the resets over it. Personally, I just pray for good RNG and go with it. The WR in this category is "free". By that I mean that 1:27:01 is very beatable with the current route and strats with solid RNG and good execution. I can see, and have been on pace for more than once, the time for this game getting pushed into the 1:25:xx range. Thats where EE strats will come into play. Once someone gets a time in that area, runners will be forced to do EE in order to beat it. As it stands right now though, its not really required to get a top time or even WR for that matter

QuébecDubldrop7 years ago

What if someone beats a current WR by 1 sec and then you dont know if its WR or not because the old one didnt have the right timing in the VOD? This is just going to open a pandora's box of issues imho.

QuébecDubldrop7 years ago

Changing the timing method would require one to retime every run on the leaderboards. And not all of those vods will show power on-credits. For that reason I am against changing the timing methods. As for the categories, I dont think its fair to enforce series wide rules on how each game organizes its categories without consulting the mods for each game. Some categories allow emu and console on the same boards because the emulators are accurate.

Everything else I can agree with and is pretty much already the status quo

Can you please change my name to Dubldrop? The "l" being omitted was a typo upon registration. Thanks in advance :D
