No. Per the game rules:

Runs must be completed on official hardware using official media. (i.e. Wii must use original GameCube disc)

Runs on emulator are banned. Runs not using fully official means of play are banned.

  • Using Nintendon't on Wii or WiiU to play a ROM is banned.
  • Using Nintendon't to run an official disc is also banned.

These rules apply for any run of this game on SRC.

If you are planning to play this game on emulator, I would recommend following the link Azurillkirby posted to set up Shadow SX. Also on that site, you can navigate to the leaderboards we are working on for Shadow SX which does allow emulator runs.

There is currently no restrictions against submitting a run that uses an emulator. That said, the last time I tried using one I had issues with the waterskip stages making it much harder to play compared to console. At one point we had a runner that did play on emulator that didn't have that issue, so YMMV.

I say go for it, but if it's a time decently close to the current record expect it to take a bit to be approved. Just to make sure there's no issues compared to console that could lead to an unfair advantage.

Good luck and have fun!

Without knowing the exact setup that would accomplish this, I would say it's not allowed. Shadow is a game where changes in hardware can result in different loading times and framerate performance. So before allowing playing the game that way, we would want to test things out first to make sure there are no advantages.

Alternatively, we currently allow emulation and the like when playing ROM hacks of the game, i.e. Shadow Reloaded.

It's good to hear there's more interest in learning the game. Although I don't currently have anything more to share regarding Emulated Runs on SRC, I would still like to encourage anyone to interested to start running the game on emulator anyways to see if it's really is a game you want to run. Unless you were already planning to buy the hardware, there's no point in doing so if you don't like the speedrun. I would recommend doing that for any game you are interested in running.

If you haven't yet, you should also join the Sonic Speedrun Discord (link above) which has a channel just for talking about Shadow Speedruns so you can ask questions and discuss them with other runners.

As CFood has mentioned, Community Events can set their own rules and will likely allow Emulator Runs if that is something that interests you.

Currently we have a soft allowing of emulators in the form of these rules for the No Warps and Glitchless categories:

  • No Warps Runs that are under 25 minutes long RTA require video evidence.
  • Glitchless Runs that are under 30 minutes long RTA require video evidence.

The idea here is to allow someone to try the game out on emulator, then once they get a decent time, choose if they want to invest in the equipment to needed for playing on hardware with video evidence.

While initially the emulator ban was in place mainly to limit potential cheating by use of TASing tools, we now know that the game is rather sensitive to changes in hardware performance and data access. The game can load stages and cutscenes faster or slower than official hardware depending on the type of emulation. The frames per second could change as well as the rate that buttons can be pressed resulting in gameplay not normally possible. So to keep things as fair and equal as possible, we have stuck with only allowing official means of playing the game. If in the future we find a means of accounting for all of these differences and problems, we can discuss changing the rules.

As for finding the physical game and equipment to play it, I guess that would depend on where you live and how much income you have to spend. At least here in the U.S. (as of this post), You can get a Wii system and the game for under $100 if you find the right deals on eBay. Understandably, that's not always the case depending on where you live as things could be more expensive. For video recording a good quality webcam is plenty fine. In fact we had WRs with webcam quality video before.

I hope this makes things more clear.

It's been talked about around the time that the leaderboards were reorganized to create No Warps and Glitchless, but hasn't really been talked about since. Trying to get the SRC's Level Leaderboard to show all the different ways of playing the levels has been a challenge.

The latest idea was to make the boards Glitched (Any%) vs Glitchless. No CCG would likely make it's way to the category extensions page, but No Warps would get stuck in Glitched assuming there's not a way to separate those out better.

It's been on my mind on occasion, so it would likely happen sooner than later, but it would be quite the time investment so it would be a bit longer before I find the time to work it all out.

Id would practice here in Glyphic Canyon. This jump is easier than most.

Close. Its less about pressing jump when you hit the wall and more about jumping before you hit the wall, but in a way where your collision with the wall sends you up.

Hello! Could someone help me link the new Shadow the Hedgehog Category Extensions leaderboard (https://www.speedrun.com/shadow_the_hedgehog_-_category_extensions) added as a link to the main leaderboard (https://www.speedrun.com/shadowthehedgehog)? Thanks!

I'm going to assume that when you say 'no chaos crystal' what you really mean is 'no chaos control'.

In which case, no one has decided to put the time in to run such a category. After that, you would need a few others to run it too. If it's unique enough, it may be considered as a category on this site. The current runners have been busy enough with what's currently available and being worked on.

So if that is something you would like to see. Start doing runs. If others like it, it may be added somewhere down the road. Though keep in mind that we may decide not to depending on the potential of the category.

Uh... was there supposed to be more to this message? Because if you have a question you kinda have to actually ask it.

Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 are allowed. You don't see it mentioned on the leaderboards because the games were not released on the newer platforms. A general rule for speedrunning is that if you can play an official copy of a game on official hardware with official means, it's allowed. There are very slight differences between the newer and older consoles for each version of the game, but not enough to justify listing them separately.

"This also means that accidentally entering the review after a run wont result in a dead run as time spent in that will no longer count"

Should have said race instead of run to be more clear, but yes, please continue the run.

It does count against the RTA time since that is timed from the beginning of the run to the end of the run, but for IGT it will not count.

It will be wise to keep track of your race times to have an idea of how far ahead or behind you are after each race in case this happens. You can configure LiveSplit to allow tracking In Game Time by manually typing in times between the races. You can see an example of it in action in this run here: https://www.speedrun.com/s1/run/m3dg3eqz

Personally, whenever I decide to do run attempts again, I would have RTA as my main timing and focus on IGT if I manage to see the time between runs or wait until the final times screen after the run is finished. In the end, whatever works best for you during your run should be what you do. So long as all the information is there from the gameplay footage, it can be verified. I'll add a small note to keep this in mind in the category rules.

Hello anyone that sees this.

As of this post, all runs submitted with be compared by In Game Time which is the time it takes to complete each course as reported by the game.

What this means is that any real time loading advantage that emulator could have over console will no longer count. (I'm allowing emulator so long as it doesn't appear to give an advantage during gameplay.) This also means that accidentally entering the review after a run wont result in a dead run as time spent in that will no longer count either.

I'll be reviewing each run to ensure that the correct IGT is applied before accepting the run, so if you dont have a good way to calculate the time, dont worry about it, I'll handle it. IGT takes priority over RTA, so a run that is a new WR without IGT will show as last place while waiting for approval until a IGT is added.

Feel free to reach out to me through these forums or on my other social accounts if you have any questions about this change or any suggestions for the leaderboards.

Have fun running :)

Looks like you added the in game time to your any% run. Due to site limitations, we cant remove that field for just any%. We use it for the No CCG times. I'll remove the IGT in your for now, and one of us will verify it when we have free time.

I get what you are saying, but it doesnt make much sense to split the categories up like that when the only difference is the last level and boss while everything else stays the same. So for now the answer is no.

Hello. Currently speedrun.com thinks that I am a twitch partner after I uploaded the sub badges that recently rolled out to affiliates. Im not seeing any of my other friends having the same issue so I'm not sure how common the issue is.

Egg Dealer will attack itself with Missle Fever when you have 0 lives remaining. It's a handicap to help the player a bit since another death means game over, though it doesnt matter as much in this game since you just enter the fight again after a quick continue screen. This is used in IL attempts since the free hit helps speeds things up, but unless you died a bunch in your playthrough or run, it's faster to just take on the boss when you get to it.

If you haven't found them yet. Here are the links to my Only Hero and Only Dark runs.

Only Hero Missions w/ CCG: Only Dark Missions w/ CCG: Only Hero Missions (No CCG): Only Dark Missions (No CCG):

These are commentary videos for marathon submissions so you might learn a thing or two about the game watching them. Assuming my commentary is actually good.

Regarding your Neutral idea, it might be better to think of it as a Pacifist run where you beat the game by only fighting enemies that prevent progress. So boss and the enemies that triggers a door or something. That run likely wont ever make it onto the boards here, but it does sound like a fun challenge.

Only Hero Missions and Only Dark Missions will likely make their way into the misc. category section once there's a run that isnt just mine.
