Token; I think it is a barrier and not because it is for lazy people but to make it more accessible for general public who just browse the site or are interested in speedruns. And I only really wanted to know more about how things worked about a month ago so I dug around so why not make that process easier. And I did not want to make an account without knowing how or what since you have to link your email adres to it and not everyone is so keen on doing that on a whim.

And yes I overlooked 'show mics' and 'show rules' because until a month ago I was just looking at what was already there the main categories and missing on some interesting categories. And my suggestion was, why not have a 'show all' button in the categories like in the dmc3 page and hide the misc categories there where it is clearly visible.

And the 'submit run' button (which is red text and more noticeable then white text which is everywhere) was not even there until I made an account so yes I learned it not so shortly ago, don't know how that dismisses my opinion, and once you learn it is not that hard but the process of figuring out and registering your email without any information is a jump in the dark, and thus a barrier.

I mean how do you figure out the process of submitting a run without having an account, do I talk to someone?, who do I talk to?, is there a form I need to fill in?, is there a special page?, Do they accept emulators and if so which ones?, how long does it take before my submission gets added to the leaderboard?, But if you put a link which is also visible to people with no account you will immediately know that there is a special page for submitting speedruns, and then they can commit. Here is an example with pokemon red/blue http://www.speedrun.com/pkmnredblue/editrun#Any_Glitchless1 this is a link to the submit page, and if you log out and go that that link you are immediately told 'make an account' and now you know there is a special page for submitting. Or to make it more easier have that page available to everyone but replace the 'submit' button with a you need an account message or have it link to make an account page.

There are people who like to be informed and know what the process is before committing(can't say how many but I am one of them), and if putting a simple (not sure how hard it would be) 'click of the button' link makes that easier then why not put it there?

PresJPolk; that is not the point, it's about making it more user friendly to people who are interested in speedruns and remove informational barriers.

Hello everyone at speedrun.com and the speedrun community. Have been lurking for almost a year now and have following a few of my favorite games. And I was hoping I could contribute to site with suggesting or helping around with trying to make some of the categories more Newbie friendly Like myself when I first visited the site. So people who just came to the site or have a passing interest in speedrunning have a more easy understanding how the site fits together. Making suggestions on how to make it more accessible or if given the permission and with cooperation help add more to the speedrun categories or make it more orderly without changing what is currently present.

And a question, How do I apply for mod/super mod for a certain game/series? I don't see an edit function so I assume only mods and super mods can change categories.

The first post said to be brutally honest so I will.

I think that the "Submit Run" only being visible to people who are logged into the site is incredibly stupid.

Because for people who just come to the site who wants to see what is up, or are even interested are instantly blindsided to the option. And being forced to go to the process of making an account to ask on the forum how to submit a run, or go to an eternal site, without even knowing that you get the submit button upon registration is incredibly redundant.

I believe the Submit Run button should always be there, and that if you are not logged in it will sent you to a page that says you need to have an account to submit, give you a popup window that says you need to loggin. or just in plain text says, you need to loggin to submit, and when you loggin you will get the regular submit run button which we currently have.

One SMALL thing, already creates so many barriers for new people who are interested in speedrunning.

ALSO I find the, Show misc categories, that shows or hides categories Extremely insulting to the people who actually spent hard work doing those runs. Who even decides what IS and ISN'T Miscellaneous I am hella sure it ain't the number of entries in that categorie.

Especially with this elaborate categorie system on the site, http://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/lac6h . I mean look at pokemon Red/blue game http://www.speedrun.com/pkmnredblue it only has 4 categories but and there is more then enough room for all 4. But somehow only the first 2 are shown.

For someone who has been browsing on this site since last years SGDQ I only really noticed and Bothered to look at the small white text in the upper right corner and actually click it last month!!! And if I overlooked it I'm certain I am not the only one and if you think that, I should pay more attention, then that just means you have been on this site too long. Because for a new comer or a new visiter to the site they will mostly look at the categories because it has the biggest letters and that's it, and if there isn't a equally big button that says "Show All". like here http://www.speedrun.com/dmc3 All those other categories will have a very high chance to be overlooked or ignored.

My take is remove the HIDE button completely And if there is room just keep it there, and if there are to many categories make an Show All button like the DMC3 page because that is instantly recognizable then being tucked in a corner with bland white text.

Over the past year I have really grown to like and even want to contribute to the site and making it more accessible to new people like myself as a passive viewer and or potential future speedrunner.

So I hope these changes will be considered,

because I see some pages who hide categories for no reason like pokemon red/blue and see an amazing alternative, a 'Show All' button, to simply having it under a button allot of people will not notice. And also an unnecessary barrier for people who are interested speedrunning themselves but dont want to commit to making an account without knowing how to submit one.
