DuckStation is where it's at. Just don't artificially increase any read speed or performance. Loads in this game would probably be super easy to remove using https://github.com/milankarman/Unload , but you'd still get an unfair advantage due to lag.

Looks like it is faster to go right path after all.

Left then jump down seems to be even faster by a smidge, but riskier since it's easy to get stuck in the wall or mis the landing.

Hello fellow runners! I will be playing WitchWay (either All Bunnies or All Artefacts) at NoReset's in-person even, Sunday March 12th. https://horaro.noreset.tv/

It will be streamed at https://www.twitch.tv/noresetspeedrun . It's a bilingual event, so a lot of runs will be in French. But I tend to comment my runs in both English and French. You're welcome to bass by in chat and say hi!

My thoughts on the new leaderboard update:

Functionally, I like the new update. Design-wise... Not convinced.

The goods:

  • Being able to see all categories at once again was a must.
  • Misc categories stay highlighted
  • Extra options in the filters
  • Links for popups/modals
  • Faster hover for run description with formatting (although the sticky note icon isn't the prettiest)
  • I first thought the video-proof indicators were gone, but it's just flipped. Now it shows when there's no proof, which makes sense given it's less common.

The bads:

  • Nitpick: I'm not sure the chevron is really clear to a user less familiar with misc categories. I also kinda wish the entire bar was clickable to open the dropdown. Like Material Design accordions.
  • Buttons and tabs sizes and even background color are inconsistent. With the rounded corners it makes it look more in line with the old bootstrap style and clashes heavily with the newer current style that was slowly being established through the site.
  • Modals make the entire screen shift because the scrollbar disappears.
  • The space around the name is no longer an anchor that can be open in a new tab 😦 ⛓ The users' name are still anchors and can still be interacted with as such (open in new tab, copy address, etc.). But clicking on it brings to the run. Seems like someone added click navigation on a div element, breaking accessibility.
  • Flags shown are different than on profile.

I guess this would be like TAS timing, where you stop on last input.

For the sake of discussion, here's some arguments against:

  • TAS timing (last input) has often a weird quirk in many games where you intentionally loose time at the very end to "hands off" the controller/keyboard as soon as possible.
  • While highly unlikely, you never know if we could find a skip or a way to speed it up one day
  • It's still gameplay. This is the same argument given for things like Super Mario Sunshine intro. The main difference here is that you don't have to go through the ending everytime you do a run, summing up to many hours of your life just waiting instead of running and improving your PB / the record. You already know if you're too far behind and can just quickly reset.
  • It's possible to softlock and still loose the run at this point.
  • No substantial change to the leaderboard rankings.
  • Game is still not considered complete. (check the save file)
  • Can lead to people cutting off their VOD before the game even ends. If we add a rule that the escape needs to be shown entirely, then why stop the time earlier in the first place?

Arguments for:

  • When you do PB, you can reset a bit earlier to keep grinding
  • Lower time shown on the leaderboard

@clackjif I understand the feeling. But this is about striking a balance between allowing emulators in the first place, ensuring they can't be abused, and using all the tools available to make moderators' life as easy as possible. If things like on-screen frame counter, and input display are too distracting for someone, there's plenty of options that are not "just go buy an original NES/SNES". Including Nestopia.

@blahpy If you don't mind, I'm curious about the reasoning for not allowing backup discs. If anything, it puts those runners at a disadvantage due to slightly increased load times caused by the laser having more difficulty to read the disc.

At least that's been my personal experience every time I've used backup discs (either to test language differences, or until I switched to the real disc if I wanted to be competitive). I know some speedgames do rely on slower loads for some tricks (ie: Battle for Bikini Bottom, where dirty discs were the meta for like a week once they understood that).

I can find the game for like 10$ on ebay, not a big deal. Just curious.

Bump? And yes of course this would be RTA, not IGT. There's also the extra hearts, I wouldn't consider an IL run valid if it took more damage than would be possible starting at 2 hearts.

QuébecAvasam2 years ago

This. I've always been for including emulators and keeping speedgames accessible. And I do think splitting emu uselessly is dumb (it just fractions boards that already aren't super active). But if they're faster than console they shouldn't even be on the same board.

I see two ways to go about it: A ) If there's an emulator that's good enough, but not faster, just allow it. You can ban those that are slower. B ) Split it into a sub-category. People can compete on unstable unofficial emu if they feel like it without affecting more "legit" runs. C ) Do both.

I would like to suggest adding IL leaderboards for both Easy and Normal. In some levels we'll be able to grind for strats that we wouldn't do in a full-game runs, and as a nice side-effect it would document the actual up-to-date fastest way to do every single level.

I'm not sure about using IGT (because it's less precise than RTA, and idk if it can be abused by pausing). But I would still record it as a second variable. Btw there's an google sheets document with some IGT times tracked into it. So I think it's safe to say there's an interest :) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tC36y0wTov708RAhEC1EMhao_MhnjKxpx9mcihpc_HM/edit#gid=1572477398

it does not appear to be obvious from watching the emulator whether this feature is enabled or not

This is my feeling as well. The fact that the feature exists is fine imo (anyone could do their own build of an emulator). But it's indistinguishable, impossible for mods to know if it was left one, and a user could very well leave it on by accident.

Thanks for the official answer.

Out of safety, I've refrained from using Mesen, and haven't included it as part of the AutoSplitter. But I'm curious what's the official call from BMBU mods concerning Mesen. With this post in mind: https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/thread/5koox

hide empty columns and I turned this on Yep, this is the way to do it. It's a small detail but thank you for dealing with it.

QuébecAvasam3 years ago

@Ramen_YT @bluebearyoutube Loading from an SD card (commonly known as USB loading or flash loading on other consoles) leads to different timings due to the flash device's read speed. The software used may also alter accuracy in certain cases. This is especially noticeable on disc-based games.

With flash carts (R4, Everdrives, SD2SNES, EZ Flash, etc.). There is absolutely no difference from the console side and data reads are still limited by the intended bus.

My personal opinion is that, unless we know for a fact it runs exactly the same as a cartridge, it should be lumped in with emulators. I wouldn't straight up disallow it since DS emulators aren't very accurate to begin with.

Hey, I'm just wondering why the separate load times option is activated. I can't be the only one bothered by the empty column, am I? ^^"

Happened on my very first All Bunnies practice run as well. I jumped straight up into her from below, maybe that's the trigger? (normally the game tries to place you right or left). I was teleported on top of the purple block, was invisible, and could only shoot up (up may have been the last direction I was holding). I was able to jump out and everything returned to normal.

We could also use the original wand for 4th. You can find a sprite of it in my splits icon pack on the resources page.
