The GitHub page explains everything you need to know. https://github.com/Zephiles/TTYD-Randomizers

Also, this is not a forum for asking about randomizers, so any further questions should be taken elsewhere.

With the discovery of the Debug Mode, it is now possible to have the Backtrace Screen display when the game crashes, without the need to have any cheats active. The Debug Mode should also not have any effect on the game whatsoever outside of this, and is therefore allowed to be enabled for official runs.

To enable it, you need to press X-B-R-B-Y-L while on the title screen. You can confirm that it is enabled by holding Z while still on the title screen, which will display the build date of the current version of the game at the top-right of the screen.

It should be noted that the Debug Mode is disabled by default upon loading the title screen, so it will need to be re-enabled in this case.

Compared to the Parlor route that gets the Super Boots, it's mainly the fights that are different, and the new route gets an extra Power Rush from the Parlor to make up for the lack of damage.

As far as I know, there are no other locations in which misc categories are kept track of.

Pre-Hooktail Pit, on the other hand, is a challenge category, which we already have a post about: https://www.speedrun.com/ttyd/thread/bilsh

To put it in simple terms, you need to be going through the bars as you are hit by an enemy. This forces the game to take you out of Paper Mode while you are still in the bars. When you leave the battle, you can then bypass the conveyor belt by simply walking past it through the wall. It is also recommended to go back into Paper Mode during this, as it helps to prevent you from accidentally going out of the wall.

The word "Badge" creates an emote when typed, and this has actually caused some issues. In a few games, there are actual badges used, and in some guides I want to say "Open the Badge Menu" but I can't because this creates an emote. Is there a way around this?

Loading from a USB Loader allows the game to run a lot faster than normal. Examples of this are little to no lag, and much faster loading times when going through loading zones. These examples alone can easily save you over 10 minutes in a run. Because of this, all USB Loaders and their equivalents are banned.

Not sure if this has been mentioned anywhere, but bullets inside of lists have not worked since the site got a new layout. I'll do a example:

  • Item 1
  • Item 2
  • Item 3

I used the list and bullet tags, but as you can see, the bullets are not being displayed.

Just because you want to encourage other people to use the best version doesn't mean you shouldn't have the option to use other versions. If different versions of the game exist, then they should be valid for runs, regardless of how seriously people take them. If you really want people to use N64 over other versions, then you should simply explain in some way that N64 is faster. It's completely unnecessary to remove the other versions simply because they are non-optimal.

  1. Most runners play on a Wii because its easier to set up than a GameCube. This is mainly because the Japanese version of TTYD requires that the Game Region of the console being used be set to Japanese. This also means that using a Freeloader will not work. Because of this, you will either need to use Homebrew on a Wii to apply this setting, or you will need to get a Japanese GameCube. For the Homebrew method, I have created a guide for applying this setting. https://www.speedrun.com/ttyd/thread/aq9mk

The Wii is also used more than the GameCube because of the option to use GCMM, which is a Homebrew app that allows you to backup/replace the current save files on your memory card. This is mostly used to use save files that were specifically created for practicing certain parts of the game, and can be changed at a quick speed using the app. Using this app on a Wii only requires you to have an SD card/USB device, while on a GameCube this would require much more work to do.

  1. We have a forum thread set up specifically for finding Japanese TTYD copies. They can usually be purchased for a total price of under $30. https://www.speedrun.com/ttyd/thread/xe4sv

  2. The All Stars category was only made recently, not much work has been done with the route(s) for it, and there are currently no save files created for the purpose of practicing the route(s). Because of these, no one has really done much with All Stars yet.

The answer is still no. Even with emulated read speeds, it still wont be the same as actual disc read speeds. Plus, there would be no way to know if the runner using the emulator could be using other settings in Dolphin to speed the game up, or give themselves an advantage.

I'm trying to update a resource with a 3MB file, but I'm getting an error that says "413 Request Entity Too Large".

If you have gotten a JP copy of TTYD (Or F Zero GX), you may have noticed that it doesn't work properly with a Freeloader. This is because the game is programmed to rely on the game region of your console when booting up. If you try to boot the game in any region that is not Japanese, then you will get an error message saying "No messages", and closing this dialogue box then causes the game to crash. (F Zero GX will not crash like this, but there will still be some other issues within the game)

To get around this, you need to have your console's game region set to Japanese. The only way to do this is to either have a Japanese GameCube, or to have a Wii with the Homebrew Channel on it.

For the Homebrew Channel approach, there is a guide on the Resources page for how to do this: https://www.speedrun.com/resourceasset/hrqgm

It should also be noted that the memory card you use for this will also need to be formatted to Japanese as well. Any GameCube memory card will work for this. All you need to do is have the memory card inserted, and the game will detect that the memory card is not in the correct format, and will then ask you if it should format it. By doing this, you are also deleting all of the saves that were previously on the memory card. If you want to keep these saves, you can use a Homebrew Channel app called GCMM to back up the saves onto an SD/USB. This app is included in the guide as well.

Another thing to note is that it is possible to boot and play English games while you have the console's game region set to Japanese. You do need some type of Freeloader to initially boot the game (Such as Priiloader, which is included in the guide), but afterwards the game will work perfectly fine, and you will even be able to save onto the Japanese-formatted memory card. Doing this does not cause any issues with different versions of the same game, as each version uses different IDs (For example, the Japanese version of TTYD has an ID of G8MJ01, while the English version has an ID of G8ME01). One thing to mention, however, is that you cannot use a Japanese-formatted memory card with PAL games. I'm not sure why, but the game simply wont allow you to save onto it, even though it works with English-formatted memory cards.

Ignoring the region lock will work for all JP GameCube games except for TTYD and F Zero GX. So for TTYD and F Zero GX, you need to actually change the game region of your Wii. You need homebrew to do this, and I have a guide on how to do it on the resource page.

The memory card you use for this will also be formatted to Japanese, so I would recommend using a separate memory card for JP TTYD. All of this is also mentioned in the guide.

All Badges was removed for a number of reasons.

  1. The category itself was somewhat arbitrary, and didn't really have any more right to be on the leaderboard than any other arbitrary category, such as All Tattles.

  2. Hardly anyone cared about it, and only a few people actually did any runs of it.

  3. Most people in the TTYD community did not want it on the leaderboard anyway.

Because of these reasons, it was removed from the leaderboard, and will likely not be added back again.

The thing is that the Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, and the Palace of Shadow in Japanese are still done in a very similar way to English. This accounts for a large portion of the run, and therefore makes the routes too similar to split. Also, the current Japanese-only tricks only make Japanese about 70 minutes faster than English for an RTA run. Despite the large time difference between the runs, the routes are still too similar to be split.

United StatesZephiles8 years ago

Japanese copies of this game can be found on Ebay and Amazon under the name of Paper Mario RPG. As for an English Any% category, the routes are still too similar to split them.
