I'm fine with this. Could go even further if people wanted to, like Death% Main Game, Death% Boss Survival, etc LOL

Discussion on mods for MGS3 Master Collection: https://www.speedrun.com/mgs3hd/forums/e1lp1

I know it's a different game, but they share some similarities and some mods for that game could apply here. Only linking it for anyone who's curious.

As long as the visual and audio mods don't affect gameplay in a meaningful way or artificially lead to some timesave, I think they're fine. The ones listed in that video are fine with me.

Use this thread to discuss anything related to speedrunning the Master Collection version of MGS2 (i.e. category seperation, timing methods, and so on).

Do you agree or disagree with HD Emulator board removal? Disagree, it'll just be its own category.

Which timing method do you prefer specifically for MGS3 MC PC - Loadless IGT or RTA? Loadless RTA, keep the score screen untouched and require runs to finish at score screen. That way, we can compare times with something more fair like loadless RTA but still have the original score screen intact (for future proofing runs).

Other two questions I'm indifferent.

One idea from @MarlonH8 was a category where we start from a different position. For example, starting from the left door on Strut A Roof for Hold Up 02 levels instead of the usual right door. This would result in a completely different route. Its the type of wacky things you like to see for category extension leaderboards. It would require constant discussion between runners on where we think the new starting position should be, which is going to be really really arbitrary. It would also mean it would be a PC only category.

Agreed, forums shouldn't be deleted. It contains years of the progression of the boards, showing where runners stood on certain topics in the past and so on. Some of them include basic information that a new runner might find benefitial.

Yeah, having explicit rules for emulation is better than the current "hidden by default" rule we have now, which is something I never really liked. Like @Hau5test said, explicitly allow RPCS3 only for now and untick emulators being hidden.

Here's a rule draft for emu inspired by the MGS1 boards:

  • Only the approved emulators listed below are allowed. If you want to run a different emulator, it must be submitted for approval regarding accuracy.
  • No emulator tools (save states, overclocking, etc.) are allowed during the run.

Recently, myself and some other moderators and runners have been testing the PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3. We've found that its good enough for speedruns and don't have any major objections against it. Testing started not long ago, but recently the Masters Collection was announced which is going to bring a Steam port of the HD Edition. It mostly defeats the point of running emulator.

RPCS3 ran with moderate PC specs basically produces no lag in the vast majority of sections in the game (with some exceptions) and very fast load times. It obliterates the PS3 hardware and is either on par with Xbox Series or a bit slower.

Recommended RPCS3 settings: Default settings and the following tweaks mentioned on the emulator's wiki (https://wiki.rpcs3.net/index.php?title=Metal_Gear_Solid_HD_Collection).

ASL File that tracks in-game time: https://www.speedrun.com/resourceasset/iacxw

You can use this thread to post your general thoughts and testing results using RPCS3 or any other emulator. This is not a vote or anything, but just a discussion thread.

Note: Emulators are already allowed on this leaderboard, but runs using them are hidden by default. This has been the rule for many years now.

Turbo = Yes RNG Level Save States = Let me think about it some more, I'll come back in the future giving a clear answer.

For turbo, as long as its a variable at minimum, then I'm all for it. Turbo is still a controversial topic in speedrunning, so having the option to filter the turbo runs out, or possibly become a sub-category in the future (should the future set of runners want to), is ideal.

For RNG levels, it would definitly would put hardware players at a slight disadvantage. The RNG isn't that big iirc, i think its like 1/3 chance or something like that of getting the right seed (at least in the case of mystery levels, can't remember for the other levels). I am little biased for this point tho, I have some RNG runs a few years ago that aren't on the board that I optimized using save-states :P
