Hey guys,

I just got a Steam Deck and was thinking of using it for speedrunning just for the funz, and was wondering which gear I need to get. Maybe someone from the community already tested it and I would love to hear your experience.

Regarding capture cards, I saw that there’s the standard approach with Elgato, as well as some new dedicated capture card from Narvitech.

Elgato: Narvitech: https://narvitech.com/home/nj300-steam-deck/

As for the software, that’s easy, I saw that OBS is available, still in beta, but it should work.

Then came the internal storage vs SD card dilemma. I just got a dedicated speedrunning SD card that I’ll be hot swapping as I need it, it’s a 64 GB SanDisk Extreme as recommended by a guide I’ve read, but my question was if any of you experienced slower performance by doing it from na SD Card on the Steam Deck?

This SD Card speed guide that is a bit outdated: https://www.speedrun.com/Project_M/guide/8nkzn This is the guide from which I got the SD card: https://esportsheadlines.com/best-steam-deck-micro-sd-card/

Thanks so much!

I enjoy watching some other speedrunners do their thing, but sometimes I wonder, when I watch their fingers fly across the keyboard in the runs that have keyboard cams for anti-cheat, that there’s something that can really hamper a speedrun. Just like how athletes need to warm up before a sport, I realized that cold can be the enemy too. And sometimes, there are no options, let’s say hypothetically it’s in winter, and then your heater broke, but maybe you’re in a competition or tournament, what are the alternatives then?

I think that, like poor scrat here from the movie Ice age, forever chasing after his nut. The cold, then, is what stops us speedrunners from achieving the goal, or getting the acorn in Scrat’s case.

Just like how the poor squirrel is always encased in ice, or dunked in freezing water. The freezing feeling due to the weather, or maybe a freezing air conditioner that your roommate at the dorm or office workmates that absolutely refuse to bring the temps down, and you just have to live with it because they argue that the weather is blazing hot outside… https://storage.ws.pho.to/s2/789D4BFC-37A7-11E9-BDE7-02D02F1953F4_m.gif

In any case, shivering hands and fingers, is a problem, whether you’re working or playing, either on a keyboard or with a gamepad.

I’ve looked at various things online on how to keep hands warm while gaming and there are cool gizmos for that that humans have invented, ranging from the cheapest and practical, like fingerless gloves to keep “most of your hand” warm (what about the tips of your fingers?), to some things that just amaze me that they exist.

Some of my research: Reddit discussion from r/GirlGamers on how to keep hands warm, for relevance Old discussion from r/LeagueOfLegends, on how to keep your hand warm, besides just sitting on them

Things like heated mouse pads, which somehow sound reasonable to me, to things that are cool looking but strange, like a heater that’s directed at your hands, basically like an oven toaster, shown below

Keyboard hand-heater uses infrared to keep your fingers toasty https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4CqmKBWwAAqBAA.jpg

There are also things like USB powered hand warmers, which are also more on the fancy side of things you could try out if you want, some people actually use and like those ones. Also, there’s something like “Gaming” Rechargeable hand warmers, by the lighter company zippo, which also functions as a power bank, but I don’t know if I’d want one considering the price of those things. Maybe only fanboys/gals would like to buy these… not me though. 😂 https://www.zippo.com/pages/zippo-gaming https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0477/8832/7077/collections/GamingHandWarmerCollection_01dccbc6-91c2-479e-a6ef-9a50dd1c336d.jpg

I didn’t know these things existed before I started looking these up on the internet honestly. 😅

So people of speedrun.com, does anyone use anything more fancier than fingerless gloves? Or do you guys have something like a portable desktop heater?

I’ve even seen some people claim (maybe as a joke) that their PC is so powerful it functions as a heater as well. 🤣🔥 https://pics.me.me/roomis-too-cold-instant-space-heater-posted-in-r-pcmasterrace-by-66962003.png

Now I think I also remember this GIF of Anna from the movie Frozen… Sometimes I feel like this while trying to play dark souls… then I die. 😂 https://c.tenor.com/yjDgT-DPkC0AAAAC/snow-frozen.gif

I was just curious, or does the game need to be "complete"?

There are some indie games that comes from demo's and such that are interesting.

what are the exact rules for something to be viable to submit or moderated on speedrun.com?

So I was just casually looking around if this exists, and turns out it doesn't. 😥

https://www.spawnfirst.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Project-Zomboid.jpg ##TLDR: Project zomboid is an isometric zombie apocalypse survival sandbox, and like Minecraft, you can craft stuff, and fight zombies to survive. Also, death is inevitable.

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/108600/Project_Zomboid

Since this was one of the games I've been watching, and it was trending, and some of the creators are entertaining, like Pr1vateLime, Nurse, Etc. they make scenario stories/self challenges in the world of zomboid, and act it out, or fail trying.

Now back to the speedrunning part, people post this stuff on Reddit and YouTube: My world record attempt at a PZ Bleach Speedrun : projectzomboid

Where they, the player, spawns in to the world and tries to find bleach from a house or anywhere, (worldspawn RNG) and drink it as fast as they can, while trying not to get killed by zombies. ⚰🧟‍♂️

This is basically similar to some Minecraft speedruns.

This game has recently been increasing in popularity since multiplayer came out.

so I wonder why isn't this sort of official yet?

Any suggestion will be appreciated

What mistakes did you do when you started speed running that you wished you knew before?

Hi guys, I have a friend who wants to try speedrunning his game, but I don't think his PC will be able to accommodate the game and the streaming. So I was wondering about what's the MINIMUM specs requirement for a PC to at least get a smooth speedrun for a game, say Mario or Minecraft?

Hi, I'm new to speed running but it's nice to know there is a community for it. Looking forward to meeting new peeps here!
